Clear skies for a long time and a magnificent arc of northern lights with the moon. Frost tightens to record levels.

Active aurora band

18.10.2021 at 22.00 - 01.10 - Akaa (III)
Markku Ruonala

The calm arc of northern lights was and remained in the sky for almost 2.5 hours, with little activation at times. Personally, after a good two hours of waiting, I gave up and drove home. At home, I was then able to admire a really active northern lights play that lasted a few minutes. Northern Lights - Observer 6-0.

Several halo forms

19.10.2021 at 19.56 - Joroinen (III)
Harri Haukka, Warkauden Kassiopeia

A thin upper cloud caused a pretty halo in the moonlight. The halo was pretty nice, even though the light pollution was just moderate. Photographed on a mobile phone.

Several halo forms

19.10.2021 at 20.22 - 20.45 - Suomenniemi (III)
Risto Karhula, Ursa (Helsinki)

Halos on both sides of the moon. At first it looked as if the shadow or image of the moon had been in the halo on the right. The left appeared a little later. The picture is from this stage, taken at 20:38. In the picture, the moon and halos are angular, but when viewed from the eye the moon is round, almost a full moon. Likewise, the "shadows" of the moon were round. But the halos were initially "salmiak" shaped, the halos narrowed towards the end.

In the sky, signs of approaching low pressure.

Moon

18.10.2021 at 19.00 - 20.00 - Rauma (IV)
Jarkko Laukkanen, Porin Karhunvartijat

A new telescope (MN190) in the yard to cool down and get some time to close the camera. The moon roared nicely in the east, so there was no need to actually look for the first object. Seeing was calmly undulating and surprisingly good. But when we’re pretty close to the full moon, it was editing a little painful wrestling with the contrast.

Active aurora band

12.10.2021 at 21.00 - 00.30 - Pyhäranta (III)
Pirjo Koski, Porin Karhunvartijat

Ehtoo became a bit of a regulator because of the clouds, which is why the story about the evening also bears its name: in the operation-closed tube / The evening started by driving to Kalanti, from where the focus spun on its hind legs to Pyhäranta, where there are pictures of the evening. When the fog and clouds finally receded, there was time for a repo set. I inched at the man that it would look just like we’ve had in the sky either a) dunes b) sar c) both. There was a moment of snads in the sky in the northern arc of the so-called dune shelf, and I was also wondering about the very reddish...

M42

17.10.2021 at 03.00 - 04.00 - Järvenpää (IV)
Eemil Pietilä, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

When I left the rain at midnight, I wondered if it would be worthwhile to start shooting again later. Well, it was worth it. I went to grab a quick about an hour of exposed Orion nebula. Yes, note that there is little skill and equipment improved since last winter. Below is a link to last winter's observation. https://www.taivaanvahti.fi/observations/show/95632

Rarely do you see such bright northern lights in an east-facing camera.

One halo form

19.10.2021 at 12.55 - 13.05 - Pori (III)
Jaakko Alakopsa, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

A nice 22 degree tire was visible from the backyard.

One halo form

19.10.2021 at 16.00 - 16.15 - Espoo (III)
Ville Wahlman

It was observed from the balcony whether that is now a 22 ° ring. The wall and ceiling of the balcony blocked the view, so the whole halo could not be seen.

One halo form

19.10.2021 at 15.50 - Vaasa (III)

The approaching sleet in the afternoon gave birth to a base ridge.

19.10.2021 at 11.05 - Kokkola (III)

Weather phenomena such as weaving were visible at sea in Harrinniemi, Kokkola, at a temperature of a couple of degrees.

Quiet aurora arc

19.10.2021 at 00.54 - 02.42 - Helsinki (II)
Georg Kieninger

At the beginning of the episode, the northern lights were visible from the cloud (Fig. 1), at 01.56 onwards as a weak but permanent and moving arc, there were sometimes a few rays (Fig. 2 and a video / Fig. 3 composed of about 40 squares)

NGC 7635

18.10.2021 at 21.15 - 23.59 - Salo (I)
Kimmo Harjunpää

Bubble fog photographed during an almost full moon. I think the narrowband filter works surprisingly well. When shooting almost directly into the zenith, the Newton tube with a meter focal length brings its own challenges. The tubes shroud at some point to crash with the stand. It limits the total amount of exposure per night. This time the exposure is about 2h.

Quiet aurora arc

18.10.2021 at 21.50 - 22.30 - Turku (II)
Paula Mattila

In the evening the sky brightened and for an hour I watched what was happening in the northern sky, the dim arc of northern lights was soon visible and for a moment activated so that I could see it with the naked eye despite the city lights.

Active aurora band

18.10.2021 at 21.00 - 07.00 - Tampere (III)
Kari A. Kuure, Tampereen Ursa

The northern lights of the night of 18/19.10.2021 were active and bright at the time of the strongest sub storm, which began at about 00.50 and lasted for about half an hour. Before that, when the evening was dark enough (about 9.45 pm), a dim and calm belt of northern lights appeared in the sky, where dim rays occasionally appeared. Going towards midnight, the activity increased, the belt turned into an arc of northern lights where randomly moving brightenings and the formation of rays were occasionally seen. Then, shortly before 1 o'clock (Finnish summer time), bright and very active nor...
