Would the proton arc have caught the cell from the southern sky? Sadly, the clouds came to ruin the findings too quickly. The arc was dim compared to e.g. the Milky Way. I don't think I saw it with the naked eye.

This may be the so-called SAR arc (Stable Auroral Red arc). See e.g. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/RG011i004p00935/abstract This red arc remained in place for well over an hour from the beginning of your observation session! While recording the test exposures, I marveled for a moment at this line of light that stood still until it slowly began to ignite ... it must have been a slightly more special Northern Lights phenomenon.
