Active aurora band

20.11.2022 at 23.14 - 23.39 - Utsjoki. Karigasniemi (III)
Tarja Kouvo

For a while I had to wait, finally the patience paid off when the rays appeared in the southern sky. There had been a stationary arch there for a long time. With my naked eyes, I couldn't see the colors in those pictures, although the pictures clearly show red. I don't know and I don't understand? On the way back home, in the fires I saw appearing over the village, I clearly saw colors with my eyes: green, purple and a little pink. I didn't take a picture, the camera ran out of battery, and I myself was in a 26-degree temperature.

20.11.2022 at 20.37 - 20.50 - Kuhmo, Niemiskylä (II)

There have been no halos and no clear weather at the time of repos. Yesterday, a short dull show, pretty soon faded to a mere muslin and ended. Photographed through the window for the second time in a row, because I wouldn't have had time to get enough clothes on to go out when it was -17.4.

Next to the works, you could see very bright lights behind the light pollution, which I photographed from around the top. On the way home, I stopped by Konttaisjärvi to take another picture.

Quiet aurora arc

20.11.2022 at 20.20 - Kokkola (II)
Tommy Lågland, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

A piece of clear sky for a couple of hours after a long time. There was even a little activity in the form of a calm arc. A green patch developed at the ends of the arch, which then started to develop into a whole smooth arch above Otava, and this is where this panorama-like view comes from. Again, the turns of the clock mess up, so in contrast to Exiffie's information, this is around 20:20.

20.11.2022 at 19.37 - 20.48 - Kajaani (II)
Taisto Komulainen

It has been a cloudy and gloomy time for many weeks until it cleared up on Sunday, I was wondering if the clear weather would last until the night, luckily it lasted that long. When it got dark, I hurried to the shooting location in Paltaniemi, Kajaani, on the shore of Lake Oulujärvi, and the lights appeared on time.

Mikko Silvola

A faint aurora borealis, crisp freezing weather and comfortably Otava hit the end of the road. The red interlacings visible in the second picture are wind turbines. A big bird, maybe a swan flew quite close in the dark, I might have startled a little. #diffuusi

Bright belt and rays. Couldn't manage to develop a bigger screen, at least not this far south.

18.11.2022 at 23.50 - 01.30 - Pyhäranta (III)
Pirjo Koski, Porin Karhunvartijat

It was a nice evening in the world of repos and landscape star photography, and I was already on my way back from Pyhäranta when the car's rearview mirror lit up. I put the car in park and spent the next hour running along the fields photographing the pleasantly active Northern Lights belt. Nothing miraculous could fit into this set, the arch activated normally and the play contained a variable number of aurora pillars and an active belt. At the end, there were pulsating northern lights at the place of the arch, and the show continued dimly when I got home, ie at 01:30. The aurora borealis...

All-sky aurora

18.11.2022 at 23.02 - 00.58 - Karigasniemi (V)
Tarja Kouvo

It was a night of northern lights and stars, even though Windy looked cloudy. Now I finally saw something reddish among the greenish rays with my eyes, that's what I've been waiting for. So spending a couple of hours outside in the freezing cold was a good trip, even though the cold tried to hit me at times.

18.11.2022 at 21.25 - 23.00 - Taipalsaari (II)
Terhi Törmälä

On Friday evening, when the weather and space weather looked good, I went to the beach to see if I could see the northern lights. And you could see them. I was a little late at the start of the substorm, but nothing can be done. While looking at the first pictures from the back screen of the camera, I wondered if RAGDA or several diffuse arcs were in the sky, it was hard to say because the clouds were moving at a furious speed, being torn by the strong wind from east to west over the arc. Looking at the pictures on the computer, I decided that they are probably arches and not so much RAGDA-rel...

Petri Pänkäläinen

Hello, The Northern Lights watchers in the group were advised to put the Northern Lights photo in Taivaanvacht, because it was suspected that there was also an aurora. In addition, now that I looked more closely, I found at least four streaks in the same picture, i.e. probably Leonids. Shot with Sony A7R IV and Sony FE 20mm 1.8G. ISO 3200 13 sec.

13.11.2022 at 19.23 - 19.35 - Kuhmo, Niemiskylä (II)

Surprisingly, I could see a bit of green from the window, yes there was an arch there. Both the observation and the predictions seemed silly, so I just decided to look out the window. They were short-lived, if I had tried to get out, they would have disappeared. The picture was taken through the bedroom window, it's dirty, but it's a good idea to show it.

Active aurora band

11.11.2022 at 19.20 - 22.40 - Valtimo (III)
Minna Glad, Kuopion Saturnus

In the early evening (at half past 8) there was a small, dim display, but a brighter version came from 22:17 to 22:40 (and yes, it continued a little after that, but for me the observation stopped there). A special thing to mention in this set is the sound - that mentioned interval was accompanied by a weird hum. At first it sounded like the approach of some odd-sounding motor vehicle, but when the "approach sound" just went on and on, I had to come up with another explanation. It was that the wind must vibrate the power lines. But the wind had not intensified compared to before. So let's ...

What streaks stuck to the pictures? It was clear and the northern lights promised something, so a fast bike ride with favorable assistance from the downwind to a distance of about 13 km, i.e. next to Turkansaari. The gravel roads were wet and the paint splashed, but it didn't slow down the pace. An hour passed there and the illuminating effect of the moon was quite impressive. The stripes just faded into the pictures, but it was a bit challenging considering the picture perspective. They were there for half an hour and disappeared from the sky when the rays also disappeared and after that ...

In the evening of a miserable rainy day, the clouds parted so that I had to take a few pictures as a test in the north direction, above the clouds and the city lights, a little green stood out.

Auroras seen through breaks in the clouds

3.11.2022 at 19.45 - Vaasa, Strömsö (III)
Timo Alanko, Vaasan Andromeda

Fighting depression at Strömsö's boat ramp. A little bit of Cloudiness plays for comfort. At that point, even the curlers were already falling out of the red. Edit. I added the action cam photos to that beginning. Somewhere around 19:00.

All-sky aurora

2.11.2022 at 18.36 - 19.10 - Kuusamo, Käylä (V)
Jani Päiväniemi, Ursa (Pohjois-Suomi)

The northern lights show in the early evening was great just now. I was in a hurry to change the lens when I was photographing other objects in the sky, but I made it to the nearby forest in time. In the beginning there was just an arch and then several that turned into belts that twisted strangely. First came the weaker Corona, after which the belts started dancing pink and the northern sky was full of red. After that, a wonderful big Corona that was great to watch. This is it at its best! edit. The camera's clock was in summer time, the times have been changed.

Aurora rays

31.10.2022 at 17.40 - 18.15 - Kuhmo, Niemiskylä (III)

Surprise repos. First, I could see something narrowly at the top of the trees, which I confirmed with the camera was greenish. From there, the curve started to get higher, so we had to quickly try to get dressed outside in the cold. Then, in place of the arch, there were quite high and varying rays, sometimes even on the bright side. It was only when I looked at the pictures that I noticed that the camera was in summer time. Even later in the evening, you could see gauze for a long time, as the clouds rose from the north.

After a long time, a brisk substorm in the afternoon made me happy in the direction of Valtimo. A substorm began to develop still during dusk. Around 1810 the plasma tail broke off creating a few minutes of fireworks. The proton spots separated a little before the substorm and a moment after. The red upper part also stood out over a few spots, hence the RAGDA designation for this one. Camera pictures still in summer time.

For once, it was really clear and the repo values looked moderate, so I had to go and see it. A little fun relatively low in the sky. Just when it seemed that the substorm would start properly, everything slowed down and dimmed. False start? The aerial glow was almost the most spectacular element of the night. A separate havis from that. Camera in summer time, so the EXIF data doesn't match.

The aurora borealis was enough even for early risers. You couldn't even tell them apart with the naked eye. Changed color temperature between images. In my opinion, the warmer picture is nicer, the cold colors remind me too well of the chilling, gusty wind :)

Statistical reposes from Vaasa. The action camera documents the events of the night in a timelapse. There were a few repos rays throughout the night. The most active stages at 21:45 and 00:30 in the countries. That latter phase is especially already bright, but very low.

I would take a look outside to see if the sky had already cleared, and since it had, I dragged the camera out. The intention was to take some picture of the Milky Way and the starry sky in general. However, nature decided to serve the northern lights in the northern sky. Now, no very spectacular spectacle that would have dropped jaws to the ground, but just such a basic set. Green shade and reddish in the upper parts. For a very long time they couldn't bear to fly, about half an hour.

The possibility of northern lights was known, but it was cloudy. The clouds started in the evening with gaps in places. It's strange that, despite the clouds, the aurora borealis was visible in the sky for about 3 hours. Sometimes it got a little brighter and the rays rose. Then suddenly after midnight it started to happen. A very clear arc or belt appeared. I don't know the terms. It started moving especially brightly. It's a shame I didn't get everything photographed. The situation only lasted about 3 minutes. I was really surprised. I photographed from the window. It would s...

It was an incredibly nice evening when we finally got up to speed on the coast. There were mostly clouds throughout the evening. At the beginning of the evening, the dunes of the first and second act were often drowned in clouds. Fortunately, I continued to work, because somewhat unexpectedly, after 11 p.m., it cleared up as if by magic. I rushed off in the car and didn't get very far from my home village when it became clear that the play was starting at these very few seconds. I peeked out, and the sky to the north was glowing green. I decided to go shoot. The northern lights started to get brighter. They quickly flared up, and in rapid pulses the bright lower edges ran across the sky. I dug the phone out of my pocket at the edge of the field. The northern horizon began to look lively. I had previously promised my Ukrainian friend that when we are now in Finland, we will definitely get to see the northern lights. And that this opportunity is usually noticed first when I start nervously wandering around the huusholli looking for optics and wool socks. This mandatory collection phase had already been passed, and the little lively arc had not given a reason to call until now "Put on your jacket, run outside and look north. The scene is happening!".
