Quiet aurora band

29.3.2017 at 23.05 - 23.55 - Kolari (II)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Repos had a rather modest show. Calm belt and gauze up to Otava. I periodically observe less than an hour. One picture would have been pretty good, but I’ll put another one in when I want to mention that at 11:25 p.m., a flash appeared behind a distant cloud board visible near that horizon. I can’t even guess if it was a flash, a fireball, an arc, or something else? Probably the last option, ie someone else :)

Active aurora band

28.3.2017 at 22.10 - Inari Partakko (III)
Taisto Niskanen

Here, I look at photos of various nature events in the sky and on the ground from my trip to Lapland, Inari, in front of a home computer. The northern lights blazed on several evenings, but a strong and gusty wind prevented the descriptions of the best (27-28 March) night area (in exchange, it was just nice to watch them from the window while enjoying a warm drink). On the early evening of March 28, the wind was soer that I was able to record the views of the sky for a while. Active northern belts warped when viewed from here on all sides of the sky. The first photo was taken from the scene to...

Active aurora band

28.3.2017 at 22.20 - 00.30 - Kolari (III)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

The second northern lights observation of the northern voyage. It was a long time from the splendor of the previous evening, but the belts twisted quite nicely here as well. Figure 1 This was immediately met as soon as I went to the observation site. Figure 2 An animation that would have had to continue for another five minutes to get a fireball between those pines. Figure 3 At 11:10 p.m., I checked from the porch that it was still warping, but I couldn't bend any further. At 0.30 I made the last check and still had to come to heaven. They were allowed to stay there when, for once, I could...

Aurora rays

27.3.2017 at 22.30 - 23.40 - Järvenpää (II)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

The magnetic field in the Earth’s upper atmosphere had shown commendable restlessness, so I watched the images from the celestial cameras as the evening darkened. Some kind of northern lights were already visible in the shade of the street lamps on the front door, but I decided to go to the edge of the field for a better view. The belt was clearly visible even to the naked eye, and rays formed in it, the tops of which looked sometimes blue and sometimes purple. The gusts of wind whipped the pedestal that they had time, and ruined several pictures. When the best phase started to be over about 2...

Auroras seen through breaks in the clouds

28.3.2017 at 22.30 - 23.05 - Järvenpää (II)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

I was still in the throes of the previous night’s handsome northern lights show and the predictions still looked pretty promising. I drove to the cliff north of Niemennokka and was accompanied by clouds, which did not recede properly until just over 11 o'clock at that time. At best, only a green arc was visible between the clouds.

All-sky aurora

27.3.2017 at 22.10 - 02.30 - Inari, Kiilopää (V)
Jani Ylinampa

The last working day of the seasonal work was behind us, so now was the time and opportunity to go a little further after the northern lights. Saariselkä was chosen as the place, at first I thought to visit Kaunispää, but along the way I ended up visiting Kiilopää. Snowshoe according to the car and walk up the slope. On the same trip we had to see others, two Germans and two Finns. Halfway through the slope, they stayed in it and exchanged a few words, on leaving I stated that as long as it is still dark about this, something is visible. I myself continued my journey to the top, and the wind r...

Quiet aurora band

29.3.2017 at 23.18 - Kajaani (II)
Kari Kauppinen

The purpose was to shoot a time lapse video but the northern lights were dim. The exposure in the pictures is 10s between 5s and frame and something like 250-300. Blasted into a pile with StarStaX software. Canon 600D and Canon 600D mod, 18mm, f3.5, iso1600.

All-sky aurora

27.3.2017 at 22.24 - 22.48 - Kolari (V)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

For once, there is no need to regret that I was late for the best stage, but the timing was, to put it mildly, paranoid. I left shortly before ten o'clock on the edge of the swamp in my passport. In the cottage yard, I was still annoyed by the trail lighting on top, but when I reached the bottom of the trail a few tens of meters away, I noticed the lights went out. While waiting for Repos, I keyed in a few pictures of the fell and wondered at the elongated cloud above my head. I got a running club on the track and we found that the the elongated cloud seems to be a northern lights belt, as...

This wasn’t as impressive compared to the night before, but something was still visible.

Quiet aurora arc

28.3.2017 at 22.03 - Tampere (II)
Satu Mäkelä, Tampereen Ursa

I decided to go see if even the previous night’s Northern Lights spectacle would repeat when that night went to sleep lands. It didn't quite happen that way, but I still saw a very bright momentary arc of northern lights with very little movement.

Quiet aurora band

29.3.2017 at 22.32 - Mustasaari (II)
Marko Takala, Vaasan Andromeda

Northern lights in the Kvarken. I managed to get the northern lights, the sunset echo and a little orbit in the same picture. It was worth going out again!

Mostly the calm arc ignited for a moment into a bright warp.

Quiet aurora arc

28.3.2017 at 22.03 - Taipalsaari (II)
Roope Luukkainen, Etelä-Karjalan nova

It did not come as promised from kp6 but once brightened into a short and relatively dim moving arc.

Quiet aurora band

27.3.2017 at 21.35 - 23.10 - Nurmijärvi (II)
Emma Bruus, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

I had just decided not to take any pictures of this northern night. Feeling was not the strongest. So I turned the bow of the car from the village of Kiljava towards Klaukala. The call for a warm cup of tea and a blanket was louder than on the horizon of a small green mist. I approached the ‘second nest’ of a series of local observation sites, a wide field opening before Nurmijärvi’s Sunshine. This time I thought of pressing the gas to the bottom and driving past. The place had already been photographed many times and with better fire. I turned open from behind a small tree cluster and all the...

Coming straight from Lapland, I went to see if there were repos even in the south. And there were them.

Quiet aurora arc

28.3.2017 at 22.30 - 01.30 - Tampere (II)
Jari Luomanen, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

A calm arc of northern lights lingered in the sky and brightened a few times, even some modest belts stood out. In the long exposure above the green, red also stood out.

Quiet aurora band

28.3.2017 at 22.28 - 23.15 - Seinäjoki (II)
Juha Peräsaari

Some kind of northern lights activity was promised, so I had to go for a little photo photography in the middle of the fields. The previous day’s show passed because of the clouds, but now luckily it was a clear sky, and not even windy. Nothing bigger screen came out. For a moment the arc brightened quite strongly, but dimmed again to a dim bulge. Edit: Added another timelapse experiment in GIF format.

Active aurora band

28.3.2017 at 23.00 - 00.20 - Kuopio (III)
Pasi Tuomainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

I set off to ice on the ice in case of northern lights. The previous night was completely cloudy in Kuopio. When I arrived at the beach, nothing was visible. I then took a few constellations in it. A dim arc came to the shallow skyline on the other side of Kallavesi and stuck in it almost unchanged for 10-20 min. Then it really started to happen. Really fast brightening, and ripple. And in ten minutes, then, this show was practically over. A couple of valid shots became the balance, and a couple of short timelapse videos. Should be more often!
