Faint naked-eye comet PANSTARRS

3.4.2013 at 22.50 - Uurainen (IV)
Erkki Rauhala

The "grande finale." Of this encounter. The weather has favored this observation so well that it almost forgets how miserable the weather has been during the fall and winter.

Handsome pictures have come a lot since last night. Here's my own version of the topic.

A rather spectacular -6 iridescent iridium flashed in the western sky.

Last night the weather was clear and not disturbed by the northern lights. When the next couple of evenings were similar, one would be able to capture the culmination of this duo’s encounter.

Faint naked-eye comet PANSTARRS

I also tried to describe these last night. Again, there was a dim northern light gauze in the direction of the comet, so very long exposures could not be used. Pretty nice, though, grabbed the picture. I added another, slightly more adjusted image.

Faint naked-eye comet PANSTARRS

This duo is approaching each other day by day. Otherwise good weather, but the dim northern light belt remained glowing in the northern sky. Therefore, the sky is a little variegated.

Half-sky auroras

Again, a very good performance, even if the best part seems to go unnoticed because of the bright sky.

Faint naked-eye comet PANSTARRS

The comet approaches the Galags of Andrameda. This image is in full moon light and with a 105mm lens. Corresponds to a focal length of approx. 135 mm with a full-size cell.

Here's tonight's comet. It stood out well with the naked eye, even though the moon is already well lit.

All-sky aurora

17.3.2013 at 23.23 - Uurainen (V)
Erkki Rauhala

Now everything was in heaven. what belongs to the northern lights. The sky hadn't even darkened properly yet when it started to happen. The photographer did not want to keep up with the swing. There was another more spectacular performance on each side of the sky.

Faint naked-eye comet PANSTARRS

16.3.2013 at 20.23 - Uurainen (IV)

Surprisingly, the comet has risen higher than yesterday. The tail would seem to stand out much more than the diameter of the moon.

Last night was very good conditions and it was great to watch as the comet sank into the tops of the trees touching the horizon.

Faint naked-eye comet PANSTARRS

Erkki Rauhala

After all, it was found, in fact, surprisingly easily. As the sun set, there were still plenty of clouds to the west, but quickly the sky became almost clear. A thin gauze remained, but the comet was still visible through it

Here is the M45, i.e. the Screens from the period before the northern lights and the comet.

Quiet aurora band

1.3.2013 at 23.25 - Uurainen (II)
Erkki Rauhala

Before midnight, northern lights began to stand out in the northern sky. The colors were found quite nicely, although they were not very bright. At times the brightest rays rose to approximately the height of the North Star. A nice cheer for this dark winter.
