Quiet aurora arc

7.10.2018 at 19.55 - 21.24 - Suonenjoki (II)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Ari Lehtolahti, Sisä-Savon Ursa

Ari Lehtolahti, Vesa Vauhkonen, the team of Siša-Savo Ursa ry, photographed those aurora borealis even then, admittedly a little special. These show the recently identified RAGDA (Red Arc with Green Diffuse Aurora). With two cameras, slightly different white balances. Finally, the initial stage show, with a bit of cloud mössö as garnish.

I photographed this RAGDA on October 8, 2018, and I also reported this to the sky watcher then, but as a SAR arc in connection with other aurora borealis images, since I had never heard of RAGDA before. But now when I saw the article about RAGDA, I remembered my own pictures and thought that I must have photographed RAGDA and not the SAR arch

In my memories of this, when I came out of the sauna, I noticed the northern lights in the sky. Apparently RAGDA is also there, possibly.

I put these pictures I took four years ago here, because apparently a lot of RAGDA had been spotted that night. In these, however, you can't see red at all, a greenish hazy gauze in front of the normal green-violet rays and the winding belt. And would there even be a hint of dunes? That green arch of gauze puffed there for more than an hour before the repos behind it came to life at 11 p.m. inland. (In the captions you use Finnish summer time, in the EXIF data you use UTC time.)

I photographed the northern lights on October 7, 2018 in Saunakylä in Kyjärve. I then noticed the SAR arc in the southern sky and below it was a kind of green oblong patch. I wondered about it and thought I would ask my wiser self what it was?

Steve z (Could not find Steve as an option in the dropdown menu.) Earlier in the evening, it was relatively strong and good northern lights to be at such southern latitudes. But the northern lights died out almost completely and I began to move north. By chance I looked west from the car and then saw a strong still light in the sky in a westerly direction. I drove another bit north before I stopped and took out the camera and started documenting. From my and an observation of Monica, it has been calculated by Michael Hunnekuhl that the position of this Steve was: - altitude: 218.24 km - STEVE ...

Caught Steve. With a chance for the northern lights, I went to Torö by Nynäshamn to catch the northern lights. At one point, I got a cool glow in the picture. I was later told it was Steve.

I already have this previous post with different photos here, but now came the discussion about those green balls along with the SAR arc, and I was thinking of adding pictures of them. New post because of that. I had just worked on a new Samyang 14mm f2.4 glass for Canon and this was the first night I got to try. I almost put the glass off when I thought it would always make that kind of red to the sky. Hasn't done it since, at least not so often. I took my first test picture straight up at 7:12 pm (it’s in that previous observation already (first picture) and I won’t put it again). It alr...

I was looking for old pictures of the Northern Lights dunes. These would seem to have the shape.

Accompanied by a northern lights alarm, I went to that beach at the time in the hope that something would be visible and it was visible. Now those Dune-type northern lights have emerged and so could these be the same fires?

In the dune intoxication, I started going through my own image files today: On October 7, 2018 we were on a northern lights shooting trip with a friend in Janakkala, on the shore of Lake Kernaalanjärvi. Beautiful evening, clouds somewhat on the horizon. Surprisingly, the clouds quickly pushed on and we got a pouring rain deaf neck. At the same time, alarms flickered into the phone and a group of repositories filled with messages about the activation of the northern lights. So I had to change places quickly. A couple of kilometers behind the edge of the cloud, we could already see the bright gr...

Just two weeks ago, I deleted pictures from tonight. Luckily I had uploaded one picture to Facebook that also had dunes .... one more time I have to go through all the memory cards to see if there is more.

I had blissfully forgotten to put the northern lights observation here on October 7, 2018, but today, when the new northern lights form was announced, I decided to fix the situation as soon as possible. The view to the west of my observation site was not dingy, but I think the northern lights dunes can be distinguished from the picture. In the second picture, at the same time, the eastern end of the northern lights belt. Awesome night, hope to get a version as soon as possible.

At dusk I came to see the northern lights play. I was now looking through the pictures again with a view to the dune shapes and there they were right there for about 10 minutes at least at 20.39-20.49.

I watched that new Northern Lights phenomenon and went through my own archives. These pictures are from the same evening when the "Dunes" were photographed in southern Finland. Here, the northern lights were exceptionally strong at the time, and I did not spot the actual "dunes" from my own images. That night, however, less than 300 images were captured on the cell, a few of which are here.

7.10.2018 was an exceptionally handsome northern lights show that I was admiring in the nearby field with my son. Today (January 29, 2020) has been reported about a new form of northern lights, a dune that has been visible that night. I had to dig out the boxes myself, and a couple of pictures were found in which the phenomenon can be seen.

I became interested in that new form of northern lights, the dunes. I was looking at my old pictures from 2018. Would these now be those dunes?
