Telescopic comet Iwamoto

5.3.2019 at 21.45 - Ulvila (II)
Juha Ojanperä, Porin Karhunvartijat

I finally managed to make a decent observation of the Iwamoto comet. Only the comet's coma was visible and under these conditions it too appeared with difficulty and very dim. The coma only brightens slightly towards the center. No central clearing or visual tail is observed. Coma diameter about 5 ', degree of compaction 2.

Jorma Mäntylä

The sky cleared unexpectedly and I was able to photograph Iwamoto on a tracking stand. The comet is very dim, although I exposed the images for a long time and stacked the images. The green color still stood out clearly. Next to the bright star is the Driver ι Aurigae.

I decided to drive to Niemennokka to photograph Iwamoto, but the pole sight of the tracking device stayed home. So I was content to illuminate the comet in a wide angle with the same objects as the Driver DS. The sites had already had time to turn west, and the lights in the metropolitan area left quite gradients in the picture. On the other hand, I didn’t even think that a picture like this could have any beauty values. Amazingly, even the Red Hydrogen Fog of the Driver shows a slight signal in the picture, even though I had an unmodified camera on this time.

For a long time I was able to shoot, C / 2018 Y1 (Iwamoto) from the twilight sky. The inverted image shows a slight tail in the 12 o'clock direction when you properly stretched the image.

The comet Iwamoto still stood out with its camera optics, although it has become rather dull. Sneaks in the Driver.

The comet is very dim, but easy to locate. Color is enough in this environment.

You can also take astrophotos on a ski holiday! I set up the camera in the yard of the rental cottage and aimed a 200-millimeter lens towards the Driver's constellation. The comet Iwamoto cools down in space so fast (230,000 km / h relative to the ground) that I stacked just over 20 minutes of exposure in the image below. The picture also shows nicely e.g. Flaming Star Nebula and the open constellations Messier 36 and 38.

Telescopic comet Iwamoto

21.2.2019 at 20.47 - 22.44 - Kirkkonummi, Komakallio (II)
Samuli Vuorinen, Kirkkonummen komeetta

I photographed the Iwamoto comet again a couple of weeks back. The comet had clearly dimmed since the previous sighting . The stacked images still show a dim tail, but the individual images no longer contain any information about it. The main image of the observation is the median stack of images taken in a couple of hours. Because the comet moves relative to the stars and the images are aligned according to the comet, the median stack removes the stars from the image moderately efficiently. The following image is an average stack of the same still images. The third image is a single minute-lo...

Binocular comet Iwamoto

3.3.2019 at 01.36 - 02.08 - Fregenal de la Sierra, Espanja (III)
Tapio Lahtinen, Tampereen Ursa

In my distress when I came from the trip, I added a comet to the shooting list. Then as I was working on the pictures, I looked at what the fog was next to the comet. And I realized that's the Flaming Star Nebula.

Binocular comet Iwamoto

28.2.2019 at 19.30 - Kuusamo
Voitto Pitkanen, Ursa (Pohjois-Suomi)

Comet Iwamoto travels among the constellations, but stood out clearly from the crowd. The northern lights gradually began to intensify from the north.

Jorma Ryske, Etelä-Suomen kosmol. seura

Comet C/2018 Y1 Iwamoto is in Auriga and still quite near earth at distance 0,55AU and moving fast 5'/h westwards.   Animation 1) Iwamoto through CN 387nm narrowband filter, 36x5 minute exposures during 3 hour observing time. Three stacked images each 12x5min=1 hour and then CometCIEF processed to 3 frame animation showing CN cyanogen jet rotating around comet optocenter ccw from about PA 0° to about PA 70°. Error marginal in PA measurement is significant. N Up, E Left, FoV 14'x14'. Stacked frames mid times 2019-02-24T18:53UT, 2019-02-24T20:00UT and 2019-02-24T21:02UT. Image 2) Astrodon G filt...

Binocular comet Iwamoto

24.2.2019 at 20.15 - Helsinki
Esko Lyytinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

It was only the last time I tried to describe this when it had been cloudy or almost a full moon in the sky. Of course, there was a lot of light pollution even now, so I didn't see the object with 20x80 binoculars. A light pollution filter was used during shooting. Taken on a fixed stand 177x3.2s. I was moving at that time. And of course you could stack even shorter pieces.

Binocular comet Iwamoto

24.2.2019 at 23.30 - 00.05 - Järvenpää (III)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

The clouds had given way appropriately at dusk so I decided to go photograph Iwamoto. The movement of the target in the sky had slowed and stacking with respect to the stars was possible without the comet stretching. The tripod had been erected in a reasonably load-bearing solid project and apparently weighed only slightly at the time of filming. The subject showed a green coma but no tail. After the drive home, the Skywardens then arrived but it didn't bother me anymore.

24.2.2019 at 21.41 - 23.04 - Valtimo (II)
Veli-Pekka Häkkinen

Went to the maximum by-pass sector, but we are at the mercy of the weather. It is good that I was able to describe this as well.

Telescopic comet Iwamoto

21.2.2019 at 19.35 - 20.30 - Mäntsälä, Ohkola (II)
Teppo Laitinen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

Without clearing up, I was able to take my first telescope image from 2019 and this comet was conveniently available. The tail was not visible this time, but when shooting it noticed how fast it was moving. Edit. I added a video showing the movement for 50min. during.

Jukka Koivisto, Suomenselän Pegasus

When there is a clear evening and a moment to describe before the rise of the Moon then this comet must be immortalized before it disappears into the emptiness of space. Average and median stacks in the pictures. So dim that it didn't stand out with its binoculars.

17.2.2019 at 23.40 - Järvenpää (II)
Toni Veikkolainen, Keski-Uudenmaan Altair

Iwamoto was eventually found easily as I twisted and flipped the stacked image. The gradient caused by the moonlight was quite shockingly strong. The direction of the tail may be conceived by a good imagination.

Telescopic comet Iwamoto

17.2.2019 at 20.25 - Kaarina, Ravattula (I)
Matti Tainio, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

I finally got to spot Iwamoto. In the previous clear evenings, work has hampered hobbies, now teased the moon. Nevertheless, something grabbed the camera cell and stacking only improved. The comet failed to align and its motion is already visible in this stack of 30 images. In the first picture, the body of the comet. In the second and third, almost the entire image area of the 105 mm camera lens.

Comet C/2018 Y1 (Iwamoto) is moving very fast in Leo's Sickle, about 1.5' during each five minute exposures taken through narrowband UV 387nm CN cyanogen filter. CometCIEF processed animation show CN jet towards PA 295°. Some movement during 3h observing time exists, but not a clear jet rotation. CN coma diameter is about 25', almost filling the whole FoV 47'x 38' image.  Image 1) 387nm CN filter, animation of 3 frames each 10x300s and CometCIEF processed. Exposures between 2019-02-12T19:50 - 2019-02-12T22:47 UTC Image 2) 387nm CN filter, stacked 10x300s

12.2.2019 at 22.30 - 23.50 - Kirkkonummi, Komakallio (III)
Samuli Vuorinen, Kirkkonummen komeetta

For a long time, a clear evening came again, and we photographed the comet Iwamoto from Komakallio with the help of two telescopes. Jari Saukkonen's observation can also be found in Taivaanvahti . I filmed the comet for about an hour and a half in one play. The main image of the observation is a median stack of images, and the second image is an ordinary average image.
