Moon

16.3.2021 at 19.24 - Sodankylä (III)
Sari Pietikäinen, Corona Borealis, Rovaniemi

With a little evening ride on another hobby ...: D The early evening had been cloudy, but little by little the sky became clearer. Suddenly, somewhere near the Holy One, something bright in the sky happened. I started looking at a possible stop along the way. I finally ended up in Luosto in the parking lot of the Amethyst Mine, where the crescent moon was slowly sinking behind the fell. The rest of the trip to Rovaniemi was still visible. Fortunately, the camera was on the way. The intention was to make the country stand out better, but the skills and patience were not enough now. And there we...

A fireball at night, brigter than the venus

2.9.2017 at 23.20 - Rovaniemi (III)
Sari Pietikäinen, Corona Borealis, Rovaniemi

I was filming my first northern lights of autumn and suddenly I saw a really bright movement in the sky. I probably haven’t consciously seen a fireball before, so I was really excited. And for once, there was so much luck on the way that the exposure was on, and the camera pointed in the right direction. :) The fireball could also eventually break into pieces, I'm not quite sure what I saw ...

A fireball in a twilight sky

22.4.2020 at 00.40 - Rovaniemi (IV)
Sari Pietikäinen, Corona Borealis, Rovaniemi

Is this a Lyrid? Perhaps. The direction would seem to be pretty much the right one. I didn’t see this with my eyes when I was chatting with a couple of other people present when I was filming. But I could already see from the camera screen that some streak had caught an 8-second exposure. Maybe this is too bright for the satellite, because again, I didn't separate them from these images at all. It is quite impossible to judge the brightness of this subject when it is so bright even in the darkest moment of the night. Venus on the left as a reference ...

Half-sky auroras

4.10.2016 at 22.36 - Rovaniemi (IV)
Sari Pietikäinen, Corona Borealis, Rovaniemi

At ten o'clock I got a northern lights alarm message from a friend and I was singing in the yard. Almost the entire sky was colored by bright northern lights. I set off to drive towards the good dark place I felt, but on the way I realized that the lights would start to dim, so I wouldn’t move the car to the parking lot for the first possible shooting location. That was a good place then. A little begging flicker, i.e. the first couple of pictures, went unspecified, which is a shame. The fire was then still at its brightest. These pictures I took are now from the fading stage of the fires....

Sari Pietikäinen, Corona Borealis, Rovaniemi

The sky brightened and I went to photograph the stars ... Well, on the way I noticed bright green northern lights, so I parked on the river bank to photograph them then. The stars are allowed to stay for the first time. :)

Half-sky auroras

30.3.2017 at 23.00 - Rovaniemi (IV)
Sari Pietikäinen, Corona Borealis, Rovaniemi

A friend and I went to Lake Norvajärvi to use the northern lights, and at the right time they arrived at the scene. The fire began as a calm arc, which then reached a rather northern storm of light at about 11 p.m. In the early stages of the shooting, the crescent moon was also comfortable in the sky.

Quiet aurora band

2.9.2017 at 22.45 - 23.59 - Rovaniemi (II)
Sari Pietikäinen, Corona Borealis, Rovaniemi

Finally a bright and relatively dark night and time to go out and use the fire. There, they were already warped on the way to the scene, that is, sometimes at about 22.45 there was the first sighting of a clear arc. The first pictures I took were taken at about 22.50. I stopped shooting at midnight when the fires faded with my eyes invisible. Not a bad catch for the first attempt of the fall.

Quiet aurora arc

1.11.2017 at 23.20 - 23.45 - Rovaniemi (II)
Sari Pietikäinen, Corona Borealis, Rovaniemi

Let me decide to go out and hurry the camera as soon as the clouds periodically stayed away. The bright moon disturbed what was rising, but the reposet was recorded nicely. I tried to get the Milky Way in the same picture, but it doesn’t really stand out in that amount of light. The first picture was taken at 23.32 and the second at 23.40. The fires disappeared at around 23.45, and the toes began to be so icy that it was better to leave. However, #bongaalinnunrata is still here :)

Half-sky auroras

7.11.2017 at 20.06 - 20.32 - Rovaniemi (IV)
Sari Pietikäinen, Corona Borealis, Rovaniemi

I noticed northern lights above the center of Rovaniemi, and immediately set out in search of a darker place. When I got to Lake Norvajärvi, the show was already well on, and I didn't really find a good place to shoot when I didn't dare go on the ice yet ... I ended up directly under the power line, which of course is not a good thing when Korona hits on. Nooooh. First time with better luck. The first picture was taken on 20.22, Korona 20.14, and the third picture on the first, i.e. 20.06. At half past nine the clouds started to come on, and the fire was fading, so I gave up tonight.

Quiet aurora arc

18.2.2018 at 20.15 - 20.45 - Rovaniemi (II)
Sari Pietikäinen, Corona Borealis, Rovaniemi

Northern lights forecasts looked promising today, so I set out in search of a cloudless sky around Rovaniemi. At the end of an hour and a half of driving, I found the sky, and then I just had to wait. It was close to 20 degrees below zero in Olkkajärvi, and fortunately a little greenery started to appear in the camera after waiting a quarter, ie around 20.15. This photo is the last one I took, at 8:46 p.m. Then I had to give up and go warm. A group of tourists remained to admire the fire ...

Quiet aurora band

19.2.2018 at 19.20 - 20.10 - Rovaniemi (II)
Sari Pietikäinen, Corona Borealis, Rovaniemi

Defying the -21 ° frost, I set out in search of northern lights. And when I got to Norvajärvi at 7.20 pm, there was already a dim arc waiting in the sky. I photographed on the spot until 8:10 p.m., when the camera battery ran out. Of course, the other battery wasn't included, but I decided to start melting my toes .... The repo did not seem to be terribly alive at that stage either. In sight, the fire was just green, more maybe gray.

Quiet aurora band

23.2.2018 at 20.30 - 21.10 - Rovaniemi (II)
Sari Pietikäinen, Corona Borealis, Rovaniemi

The bright evening attracted me to the hunting of northern lights ... And there they were already waiting in the sky when I got to the scene at Norvajärvi. For half an hour I described a very calm arc, the first battery ran out, as did the memory card, and at the same time a herd of tourists with flashlights flocked to the scene. I was just about to leave when the northern lights glanced wildly. There were rays and a very lively northern lights belt and a red bottom visible to the naked eye. And all this best time (maybe 21.00-21.10) I am an unhappy amateur I try to leave my fingers to change ...

Half-sky auroras

14.3.2018 at 20.45 - 23.50 - Rovaniemi (IV)
Sari Pietikäinen, Corona Borealis, Rovaniemi

Northern lights were strongly promised, and when the sky was perfectly clear and not in any way particularly cold, one had to go with the camera to the scenery. At the first location around Olkkavaara, I was around 8:45 p.m., and by then there was already very green visible. The last of these pictures was taken from there at 9:25 p.m. You will start to fade for a moment, so I changed places a couple of times and let it look like a geocache as a passage of time ...: D The corona photos were taken "on the way home" from the shores of the Arctic around 23.25. After that, until 23.50, I still desc...

Half-sky auroras

23.3.2018 at 00.20 - 01.00 - Rovaniemi (IV)
Sari Pietikäinen, Corona Borealis, Rovaniemi

I got home from a business trip a little before midnight, and I had already admired the blazing fires in the sky for almost the entire bus trip from Kemi to Rovaniemi ... I had to defy the fatigue and go to the filming locations. Apparently I missed the wildest Korona show in a few minutes, I got the first picture taken at 00:20, and from then on I shot less than emotionally before I had to give up on fatigue. With the naked eye, the fire was green, and I just didn't get any other color in the pictures.

8.4.2018 at 00.00 - 01.00 - Rovaniemi (II)
Sari Pietikäinen, Corona Borealis, Rovaniemi

Northern lights predictions didn’t look very promising, but nonetheless I decided to go out and shoot the camera when the sky was so very clear. I got to the scene shortly before midnight, and started filming the Milky Way when nothing else was visible. From the very first pictures, I was delighted by the small greenery, which in the course of an hour eventually developed into a visible firework. Jee! The first picture was taken at 00:14, the second at 00:35 and the third at 00:38. At one point the fire had started to fade, and the first battery ran out, so I went to sleep ...

Half-sky auroras

10.4.2018 at 23.15 - 00.50 - Rovaniemi (IV)
Sari Pietikäinen, Corona Borealis, Rovaniemi

Northern lights predictions did not disappoint and the sky was almost clear. I got to the scene at 23, and it wasn't dark at the time, but the camera immediately found a northern lights belt. For almost two hours I periodically follow the development of the fires in the darkening evening. For a long time I didn’t know which direction the camera would be pointing when everywhere warped. Koron also showed up. :) Phew. The 4 hour night’s sleep was a little too little. If this season is about to end, will I have time to sleep? It seems that even today the camera still has to go out ...

Active aurora band

16.8.2018 at 00.05 - 01.00 - Rovaniemi
Sari Pietikäinen, Corona Borealis, Rovaniemi

This is where this northern lights season begins! In the evening there was a feeling like that. that now is that night ... At midnight I arrived at the scene at Lake Norvajärvi, and pretty soon a very thin, thin, greenish, sky-wide arc that appeared across the sky appeared just above me. However, the greenery was only visible in the picture. I said that here was this. But not after all. As the clock approached one, the fires were activated. The dimmest fires barely stood out from the clear sky, but luckily there were even brighter rays in the show. In addition to the fires, one picture on the ...

Quiet aurora band

27.8.2018 at 23.55 - 00.50 - Rovaniemi (II)
Sari Pietikäinen, Corona Borealis, Rovaniemi

After all, those reposet came from there when you could wait. At 23.00 I was already at the place of use, and I described the passage of time as the moon and its reflection from the surface of the lake and cursing my tricky fisheye lens ... I was already on hand when the photographer looking in the other direction snorted that it was now visible. 23.55 I saw the first come, the brightest moment was at exactly midnight. In it, they will then be at times a green gauze visible only in the pictures, and at times there will be rays visible even with purple eyes. I also got the corona photographed, ...

25.9.2018 at 22.50 - 23.45 - Rovaniemi (II)
Sari Pietikäinen, Corona Borealis, Rovaniemi

Who would have thought that a rainy day would be followed by a bright night? I started to feel so restless during the evening that I had to go on a fun job to the Friendship Bridge. I ended up at the scene at 22.50, and by then there was already an arc in the sky. I handed over at 23.45 and still in the sky was left you will wade. But you also have to sleep .. I had dreamed of getting the fall colors and northern lights with the moving water in the same picture before the snow came and the leaves dripped. And it worked. :) The full moon, of course, weakened the visibility of the fires over tim...

Half-sky auroras

7.10.2018 at 20.50 - 21.50 - Rovaniemi (IV)
Sari Pietikäinen, Corona Borealis, Rovaniemi

Huh, what an evening! I drove from the south towards Rovaniemi, and probably already at 20 o'clock after dark it was the first to come in the sky. I didn’t want to stay on the road to shoot, so I continued my journey. In Rovaniemi, a quick addition of clothes, and immediately back to traffic with the camera. Summer tires under the car and small roads on the ice ... I have never seen such bright lights on the center lights before! I ended up at the nearest possible location to the shores of the Arctic. I filmed there around 8:50 pm-1.50pm. The first of these pictures was taken at 20.55 and ...
