Active aurora band

12.9.2014 at 23.00 - Helsinki (III)
Pyry Ekholm, Pollux, Aalto-yliopisto

At the top of an ore mansion chasing northern lights. The northern lights were dim among the clouds and light pollution, but different shapes and rapid variations were also visible to the naked eye. The brightness is evidenced by the fact that the foreigners present and many others from the hopeful spectators apparently saw nothing. Aside from the momentary glorifications, one had to know with these what one was looking for.

All-sky aurora

17.3.2015 at 22.00 - 01.45 - Espoo (V)
Pyry Ekholm, Pollux, Aalto-yliopisto

I am not very easily made to leave the shooting practice in the middle, but the messages from the northern lights visible all over the sky were enough, a bow to the package and to the yard. A small unlit field next to Vermo was chosen as the observation site. When we arrived at the scene, there were already dim northern lights up to the zenith, here and there brighter spots. After a while, there was a spectacularly pulsating and blazing performance of the whole sky. Sometimes dimmer, sometimes brighter. The final phase seemed to begin shortly before, just after the camera’s memory card had bec...

16.1.2021 at 08.05 - 08.30 - Espoo (II)
Pyry Ekholm, Krista Vajanto, Pollux, Aalto-yliopisto

In the morning, a pillar of artificial light was spotted from the window and they went out to a nearby construction site with bright lights. Fine pillars and lower suns flickering in close-up crystals.

Halo phenomena covering the sky

3.5.2021 at 08.30 - 15.20 - Espoo (IV)
Pyry Ekholm, Pollux, Aalto-yliopisto

A handsome and truly long-lasting halo play. This was also followed from Kirkkonummi. The full horizon ring was visible for hours. Wegener for me for the first time on display. ZYK had time to dim before I could get the wit.

Partial solar eclipse

10.6.2021 at 14.00 - 14.45 - Espoo (IV)
Pyry Ekholm, Pollux, Aalto-yliopisto

Solar eclipse snapping from the backyard, comes with 1990s film filters and a camera. Holding the filter in front of the glass by hand gave me some sort of image. Sunspot groups 2829 and 2832 are also barely visible. The camera on a tripod aimed at the Sun made several passers-by remember the blackout titles and quoted the filter several times.

1.12.2019 at 15.20 - 16.00 - Espoo (III)
Pyry Ekholm, Pollux, Aalto-yliopisto

White and blue pearl clouds in the direction of the setting sun.

18.5.2020 at 16.45 - 17.15 - Espoo
Pyry Ekholm, Pollux, Aalto-yliopisto

Mammary clouds in a developing thunderstorm cell. First seen from Mankka and photographed from Niittykumpu. At its best, the most spectacular has come against me.

Zodiacal light

10.3.2021 at 20.50 - 21.20 - Inkoo (III)
Pyry Ekholm

In Kopparnäs, peeking would see the zodiac light, and it did. The light rises in the middle of the picture above the Inkoo lights. At the same time, there was a flash resembling the spotted Iridium, but this went unrecognized.
