All-sky aurora

17.3.2015 at 19.56 - 03.55 - Viitasaari (V)
Juha Kinnunen, Jyväskylän Sirius

I noticed the first repos of the evening at about 7:30 p.m., and the show continued uninterrupted until at least 4:30 p.m., when I retired to a day’s rest. The Blue Corona at 8 pm made a special impression, as did the fact that most of the time the camera had to be pointed between the southeast and lunch - in Central Finland! I photographed them all with a 14-millimeter, which also became cramped at times.

All-sky aurora

5.10.2015 at 03.00 - Inari (V)
Juha Kinnunen, Jyväskylän Sirius

The midnight nights were quite calm, but at midnight the activity increased significantly and continued fine over three o'clock. In the last two images, the direction is south, meaning the whole sky became covered. All images at 14 mm.

All-sky aurora

22.10.2001 at 21.00 - Jyväskylä (V)
Juha Kinnunen, Jyväskylän Sirius

Here are a few photos from October 22, 2001, which is one of the most impressive events of my repo photography career to date. The range of shapes and especially colors of the northern lights was more or less perfect - also a blood red rite from horizon to zenith, in many different structures. The wonderful, long screening included many really impressive moments, e.g. these crowns and a really solid dark red ray that remained in place for a long time. The cause of the storm was sunspot group no. 9661, in which two Earth-directed corona mass eruptions occurred within a short time, both with an ...

Half-sky auroras

7.10.2015 at 21.11 - Jyväskylä (IV)
Juha Kinnunen, Jyväskylän Sirius

In the early evening, only at most medium-sized openings were found in the cloud cover in the Jyväskylä region, so the large structures were not completely visible. However, the evening was remembered, in a special way: the Tikkakoski garrison and the Air Force base are nearby, where the day's air war exercise continued. Two fighters took to the air from the field and a pair of exercise-related red torches were fired from the same direction, which appear in the lower right corner of the first image. It was possible for the pilots to have a great view!

Memories from 10 years ago: a fairly ordinary northern lights show in Inari, seen from the West Bank of Lake Ukonjärvi.

Partial solar eclipse

20.3.2015 at 12.12 - Jyväskylä (IV)
Juha Kinnunen, Jyväskylän Sirius

What struck me most strongly was the feeling that the warming effect of the sun was clearly reduced more than the brightness of the environment. The observation conditions were perfect throughout the performance.

Bright night shining clouds

18.7.2020 at 00.01 - 01.50 - Jyväskylä (IV)
Juha Kinnunen, Jyväskylän Sirius

Wider and brighter than the previous bridge: the nights were widely visible on the northern sky before midnight and from there they brightened and strengthened so that they extended from 1-2 east to west at 1-2 o'clock and the upper limit was at its best in zenith. In the west there was a laundry board, otherwise the shapes were mainly different types of gauze. The movement and shape changes were quite rapid. It seemed to be as high as 16 degrees and the air was calm.

Pääsateenkaari

13.7.2020 at 22.11 - Jyväskylä (IV)
Juha Kinnunen, Jyväskylän Sirius

For at least half an hour we got to admire this show. The water was so sprinkled that the surface of the 14mm front lens was allowed to dry whenever the memory.

The sly downpour produced a bright main arch as well as a side arch.

Primary rainbow

3.8.2020 at 21.02 - Jyväskylä (IV)
Juha Kinnunen, Jyväskylän Sirius

A heavy downpour swept over Jyväskylä and the sun was shining behind it - as many times before this summer. Apologies for the bumpy panorama!

A fireball at night, brigter than the venus

4.10.2015 at 22.13 - 22.14 - Inari (III)
Juha Kinnunen, Jyväskylän Sirius

Not a fireball, but a nice-length stellar flight was recorded in three exposures as I was shooting a Northern Lights-time child. Vanana showed small brightening spots in the eye. Four-second exposures every 10 seconds: the first at 22:13:40, the second at 22:13:50, and the third at 22:14:00. NOTE! Since the Sky Watcher maintains that this is NOT a starburst ("We suspected there could be no starburst here, as more than 20s is a remarkably atypical duration for a starburst.") - and therefore the observation was classified by them as northern lights - I hope for views on what it is. In my opinion...

3.11.2015 at 22.00 - 23.00 - Jyväskylä (III)
Juha Kinnunen, Jyväskylän Sirius

The ground weather was ideal - seven degrees warm, calm and clear - but in space weather a little handbrake was left on. This in itself pretty brightening was right after 10pm. I waited for the second coming until midnight, but it didn’t happen.

Active aurora band

7.6.2003 at 22.00 - Baie-James, Kanada (III)
Juha Kinnunen, Jyväskylän Sirius

What is more comfortable in the midsummer frosts than reminiscing about summer and ... northern lights! I was on a business trip to Quebec, Canada in early June 2003, and one weekend I went on a trip to the wilderness, hoping to shoot repos for once in the middle of summer. There is enough light-free wilderness there and the sun's activity was also nicely elevated . Around Chibougamau in the latitude of Paris, I continued on the ‘ Route du Nord ’ from which I took these pictures, comfortably wearing a summer shirt.

Active aurora band

13.10.2016 at 21.53 - Kyyjärvi (III)
Juha Kinnunen, Jyväskylän Sirius

This demonstration was an excellent example of how the Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field alone can produce powerful northern lights. After all, both the speed and the density of the solar wind were at very normal levels all the time, but Bz was at the level of -10 ...- 20 continuously for as much as 12 hours. The road around Jyväskylä was in a cloud, so I drove in the direction of Suomenselä, and soon after Saarijärvi the sky became quite clear. In many places, however, there was dense fog.

Juha Kinnunen, Jyväskylän Sirius

These repos were very quiet - the forecasts allowed me to expect much more - but it was nice to see these after the summer break as well. The conditions were right - dark, clear, warm (13 C) and calm, on the neighboring beach the Venetians will still be crowning the atmosphere.
