The JWST James Webb Space Telescope is currently stationary at the L2 point, aligning its mirrors, and its apparent motion relative to the stars is distinguished in this animation exposed for 30x90s = 45 minutes. The apparent motion of the JWST with respect to the stars is mainly due to the annual orbit of the Earth (= observer) L2 point in its orbit around the sun, the daily rotation of the Earth (= observer) and the motion of the JWST around the L2 point. I photographed the Otava constellation at the University of Helsinki Observatory in Metsähovi. The second image also dimly shows the HD84406 star currently being photographed by the James Webb Space Telescope. It can be found in the stellarium.

I decided to still try to describe JWST at its disposal site. During shooting, I tested the views and looked bad but after calibration and stacking, however, the subject appears reasonably clear and the location and brightness appear to be correct. As you can see from the picture, the brightness is mag 17 classes.

On January 24, 2022 at 21:00 Finnish time, JWST parked the L2 points slowly. The motion of the JWST is shown in the animation below (24x60s = 24 minutes) and in the center of the stacked image (15x60s). During the 15-minute exposures, the JWST moved for 20 arcseconds. Even a few clouds and snowflakes went over the field of view during the exposures, dimming the image. It is already dim, the brightness of the JWST measured from the image is mag 17.34.

The Webb space telescope has reached its L2 parking distance at a distance of 1.5 million km, but is still easily visible with the Hankasalmi Observatory's 40 cm tee telescope with a 60-second exposure. The space telescope is marked with a green circle in the image. It was at an altitude of 31 degrees at the time of shooting.

I was still trying to get the JWST space telescope described on the way to the L2 orbit and succeeded. It is dimmed from the last observation - I now measured the brightness as mag 16.25. At the time of the photograph, JWST was approximately 1,427,000 km from Earth and the distance to the L2 track is still approximately 39,000 km. An apparently rotating satellite was also left in the boxes (second image).

James Webb space telescope photographed from Rovaniemi. Seeing was very poor and there were clouds in the picture field, but then it was drawn from there. Here’s a stack of three-hour pictures showing how JWST draws the Streak into the sky. By merging the images into video, the motion was really nice, but it didn’t fit within the recommended megabyte limits.

Last night, it was surprisingly clear in Spain, contrary to predictions, so I got to try filming JWST. I took a 45 x 1 minute series and made an animation of them. I also measured the brightness and got the result mag 15.4. At the time of shooting, the JWST had about 500,000 km from the globe and covered about 35% of the way to the L2 point. In a stacked picture - as if the track wasn't straight?
