Chaotic plasma flows of protuberance over an hour. Luntin Block filter a little rusty, but not very much a nuisance, the gif animation shows the camera reflection on the left. The filter can be repaired with a spare part that is on order.

Variable star UX Uma

25.1.2022 at 21.32 - 06.33 - Pieksämäki (II)
Timo Kantola, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

Destination to return from year to year: UX Ursae Majoris. About 13mag object nesting in the handle of Otava. Wikipedia presents UXuma as a “Novama-like variable, reminiscent of a nova, or exploding star, in which no nova eruptions are detected - yet! In the system, the Sun-like (about 0.5 x the mass of the Sun) and the white dwarf star, about the same amount of mass (a few tens of thousands of km in diameter) orbit so close that it only takes 4.7 hours for one revolution. The proximity of the stars causes mass flows between the stars, the white dwarf collects a supply of hydrogen on its surfa...

Starry sky image

25.1.2022 at 19.40 - 20.00 - Pieksämäki (II)
Timo Kantola, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

An interesting star of Teegarden. Aries in the constellation, about 15 degrees southwest of the Pleiades (M45) dim, 15.1 magnitude, Star of Teegarden. That star caught the attention of Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking (NEAT) researchers in 2003, with a specific motion of about 5 "/ year. The star is only about 0.08x the mass of the Sun, with a rating of a red dwarf star. The distance to the star of Teegarden is about 12.5 light-years. In 2019, scientists have found evidence of stellar radial motion on two Earth-like exoplanets in the so-called zone of life. Star of Teegarden: RA 02h 53m 00.89133s ...

Half-sky auroras

15.1.2022 at 01.07 - 01.28 - Pieksämäki (IV)
Timo Kantola, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

The third eruption of the evening (measuring Hankasalmi according to the station) was already the Northern Lights storm on my yardstick! Absolutely amazing !! Fortunately, there was a fisheye lens, otherwise would not have known in which direction the image. Here are the best pieces from half an hour, the very beginning missed.

Great northern lights! At first it was a little brighter when I got the camera in the yard, so it was already a little quieter

The fireball camera grabbed the dunes, I compiled the images into a giff. The dunes were visible from 21:13 to 22:08. Seen from Pieksämäki, it is quite close to the west, at its best at 30 degrees. Edit, there was a wrong entry in the direction of the faulty image, now it should be ok.

A fireball at night, brighter than the venus

1.1.2022 at 22.54 - Pieksämäki (III)
Timo Kantola, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

This fireball, about 2.5 seconds long, remained in the pictures of the fireball camera. Approximately 350 km from Pieksämäki in direction 117, ie above the eastern shore of Lake Ladoga.

Meteor image

15.11.2021 at 04.40 - Pieksämäki
Timo Kantola, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

This case is not really a fireball now. the brightness of the image is estimated at -1mag, and according to the log entry of Skypatrol, the duration is only 3 frames, i.e. 0.12sec. What makes it interesting is that the smoke of the meteorite can be followed in the pictures for about 20 minutes! An interesting case, what kind of material might have been? The first Gif (ASI294MC + Samyang 16mmF2.0) from 18min. At the beginning of the giff in the upper right corner is the M44 constellation. Second Skypatrol image (camera watt 902h 1/2 "Supreme optics 3-8mm Tamron F1.0 ASIR zoom, zoom with about 3...

Telescopic comet Schwassmann-Wachmann

8.11.2021 at 23.20 - 00.16 - Pieksämäki (II)
Timo Kantola, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

The material flown by the Comet 29PSchwassmann-Wachmann eruption spreads and disintegrates and gradually dims. I got the apparent size of the comet's eruption cloud quite accurately 300 ". I made the previous observation of P29 885 hours ago, ie 3.10.2021 03:40 (Finnish summer time), and on October 3, I measured the apparent diameter of the eruption cloud to be 110". Cartes gave the distance of P29 on October 3, 2021 at 03:40 (summer time) 5.4588AU = 816624857 km, and on November 8, 2021 at 23:40 (winter time) 5.0493AU = 755364529 km. With this data, I calculated that the burst cloud was 4...

A fireball at night, as bright as a full moon

24.10.2021 at 19.15 - Pieksämäki (III)
Timo Kantola, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

A slightly rarer fireball when flared behind a cloud curtain, and still visible in the picture. So many clouds that throughout the evening and night there were no stars in the pictures at all. Flared approximately above Kerimäki, most of the flight was clouded, only 0.22sec was left for Skypatrol detection

Light pillars

4.10.2021 at 23.26 - 00.28 - Pieksämäki (III)
Timo Kantola, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

Strange dim lines appeared in the images of the fireball camera until I recognized them as pillars of light, or rather the map of Pieksämäki in the sky! I also took a couple of pictures with a paperback. Wow, I've seen similar ones in Sky Watch, I guess it's pretty rare though. With the naked eye, these were barely noticeable. Edit: I try to add a few pictures and one picture of a fireball camera that shows stars and can map the height of the map halo. Let's see if it works. Edit more editing: one image edited with the 100% overlay method suggested by Pentti Arpalahti, a significan...

Telescopic comet Schwassmann-Wachmann

3.10.2021 at 03.30 - Pieksämäki (III)
Timo Kantola, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

I spent the DS night and as the last target of the night at half past four I thought I would still take a picture of the comet 29P / Schwassmann-Wachmann, even though Cartes reported the target with a brightness of 15.4mag. The surprise was quite when the big blob was in the middle of a 4 second focus image! After a short google, it became apparent that there had been an eruption in the comet about weekly on September 25: https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-news/comet-29p-undergoes-brightest-outburst-in-recent-years/ Definitely follow the comet if the weather allows. I estimate the brightnes...

Telescopic comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko

2.10.2021 at 23.54 - 00.09 - Pieksämäki (III)
Timo Kantola, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

ESA's Rosetta probe orbited near the comet 67PChuryumov-Gerasimenko from September 2014 to September 2016, and ended its mission by landing on the comet's surface https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosetta_(spacecraft) You can find amazing close-ups of the comet online no matter how: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko Now that the 67P is in its 6.45-year orbit just right in the constellation Taurus, I decided to take a picture of it. I didn't rate the brightness, but I trust the others' estimate that it's about 10.5mag, and the tail is nice too. According to...

Perseids

12.8.2021 at 22.54 - 03.48 - Pieksämäki (V)
Timo Kantola, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

The sky is full of star flights! Crafting with Photoshop all the time between 12.8 at 22: 54-13.8. at 03:48 star flights photographed by a fireball camera in the same image. A little from the center at 4 p.m., one fireball has gone into two parts (a piece is missing in between) due to a clutter in the imaging computer (Pentium lll + Win98SE). Plus a couple of spectacular fireballs. Pictured ASI294MC + Samyang 16mmF2.0 The first one appeared on 12 August at 23:50:19 Another from the lightening sky 13.8 at 03:45:11

Clearly, 17 Perseids were left in the fireball camera images last night. One brighter flare 02:43:07, from the picture estimates maybe -10mag duration 0.56sec. The same flight grabbed the image of the ASI294MC from which the body, unfortunately the power line came along.
