Auroras seen through breaks in the clouds

15.1.2022 at 23.30 - 23.55 - Akaa (III)
Tom Eklund

Quite bright active northern lights near the horizon until the clouds again covered the sky. According to those who had been there before, the sky had been cloudy and nothing had been seen until the pictures. Immediately after this brief activation, the clouds indeed covered the sky again and I left for home.

Auroras seen through breaks in the clouds

14.1.2022 at 19.30 - 02.00 - Akaa (III)
Tom Eklund

Northern lights from the slits of the clouds. It would probably have been an awesome play if the clouds hadn’t been in front once again. This is the first season of my northern lights bongering career that started in 97-98, when it’s been cloudy every single time if there are better repos than the little ones. I got a few pictures when I saw almost -20 bz when I saw it at home and the fact that the camera in Tampere's Ursa showed a little green between the clouds, I decided to go out and wait until the morning, despite the clouds and snowfall, to see if a couple of openings would come. A f...

Active aurora band

17.10.2021 at 20.00 - 23.00 - Akaa (III)
Tom Eklund

Bz was in nice readings in the evening and the sky wasn’t completely in the cloud, so out. The play was relatively active, but not particularly showy, at least in the clear sky. Within the play, a number of cloud ferries went over the northern horizon and at times it seemed as if all the brightest stuff was right there behind the clouds. What, then, is the truth, and whatever guesswork, this story does not tell. At its highest for a while, even on top of Otava, it was like an arc.

Tampereen Ursan kameroissa näkyi selkeää taivasta ja reposia. Pikainen visiitti ulos paljasti aktiivisia, jos kohta aika vaisuja sekä laajalti pilvien peittämiä, reposia.

Rocket-related clouds

28.9.2021 at 00.14 - 00.16 - Akaa (V)

#raketti: Centaur V #satelliitti: Landsat 9

Image of an exceptional thunder cloud

2.8.2020 at 20.30 - 21.30 - Akaa (IV)
Tom Eklund

I watched from the rain radar that a thundercloud seemed to pass by right next to it, where there is a very echo in the direction of travel at the rear edge, and I myself happened to be just outside the rear edge. Somewhere in between the trees it was clear that there is exceptionally more to the bottom of the horizon than a moss and I hurried to the nearest opening and this became apparent. The lightning was really weak, but the structure, well I personally consider this to be perhaps the finest thunderstorm I have ever seen. When it was visible on the edge of the field that something really ...

Kangastus

27.1.2019 at 12.30 - 15.30 - Valkeakoski (V)
Tom Eklund

For a long time in the Star of Heaven. January 27, 2019 was cloudless, the wind was calm and the temperature on the car gauge was between -18 and -20. I left for Valkeakoski on Vanajavesi's Rauttunselä to see sea eagles. Maybe due to the cold weather, the sea eagles ’restaurant services were on hiatus and probably not even ten eagles were visible, but something else really was visible! I’ve often looked at the lake to see if there would be any fabrics, but there haven’t been any decent hits before. Now, from the very first minutes, there were clear decent fabrics and they were born and dis...

An evening of red-skinned belts. A rare treat at these latitudes are these plays, where red-like belts can be seen for so long and so clearly, while other activity is not remarkably intense. From my own observation career, 2 similar evenings from the early 2000s come to mind. This is actually almost a version of the first one. Great play and there were high rays here. http://tomeklund.kuvat.fi/kuvat/aurora/2015/08+oct/

Half-sky auroras

7.10.2015 at 19.40 - 01.30 - Akaa (IV)
Tom Eklund

This was a stunning play, one of the most impressive in the history of our own observation! Bright belts meandered in the blue sky already at the beginning of the observation period like overly sweet appetizers before the meal itself. The main course began to come to the table shortly before 10 pm, when Korona lit up and the rather cloudy southern sky seemed to be filled with somewhat bright rays. Fortunately, the north side was a little clearer and the sky had a belt next to each other and a staggeringly wide knot of belts meandered in the western sky. After this eruption, the going calmed do...

Really handsome fires that on a couple of occasions got into a really bright and very fast moving flight. Especially at one point, the northern horizon seemed to be full of really bright and hugely fast-moving pieces of belts. http://tomeklund.kuvat.fi/kuvat/aurora/2015/06+oct/

The repos came out as soon as the evening was a little dark, but the solar wind readings did not promise the actual yybershout. However, it was the first night of the weekend, so what’s waiting here, maybe it will get something done maybe not, time will tell. After waiting a few hours, the lights came on as if the circuit breaker had been turned on. The play was short, of course, but very bright, sharp and fast enough. The appeal times in the hustle and bustle were a little longer than they should have been.

Half-sky auroras

10.9.2015 at 22.30 - 01.20 - Akaa (IV)
Tom Eklund

At first, the northern lights reached all the way to zenith and beyond, but very quickly the fires retreated only over the northern horizon, where they painfully maintained a quiet life throughout the observation period. There was no room for any decent activation.

Quite a handsome play, which, however, did not really have time to get a change of eye before the clouds covered the sky. At its best, there seem to be repos in the area of about half the sky. http://tomeklund.kuvat.fi/kuvat/aurora/2015/07+sep/

A somewhat awesome-looking eruption with a remarkably large amount of bright detailed and fast-moving stuff. Luckily, there was still a bright moonlight, so the human light pollution didn't bother me at all. That is, an almost perfect play! http://tomeklund.kuvat.fi/kuvat/aurora/2015/28+aug/

Half-sky auroras

12.9.2014 at 21.30 - 04.10 - Akaa (IV)
Tom Eklund

At its best, beautiful big and subduedly dim over half the sky repos. The size and the reddish stuff I could see were found, but the brightness remained very modest. I don’t think a single bright shape, ray, or belt was visible all night, not a single one. The previous night’s repos, which I saw for a few seconds but didn’t have time to shoot, were very much brighter. At the end of the night by the lake, the lens drew a mist before even the shutter-release button was pressed. More pictures: http://tomeklund.kuvat.fi/kuvat/aurora/2014/12+sep+evening/

I snoozed for an hour and a half hours of sleep to get split if cme happened to come. The plan failed. When he left home, the curve of Kiruna's magnetometer had already begun to fall. When I left the yard by car, there were bright big repos. When I got to the observation site and ran down to the beach, there were bright and big repos. When I changed the lens to a wider one, there were bright and big repos. When I west of the camera tripod, there were bright and large repos. When I removed the lens cap, there were no more bright big repos and no coming. I took 5 pictures of the faded repos ...

Tom Eklund

Quite an unusual play in very top conditions! A faint northern lights glow appeared as soon as the sky was dark enough. Shortly before midnight, the threshold of observation was crossed by the first petty activity spur of a minute or two, which then began to come one after the other until about 1.30. However, after those small attempts at activity, it always looked as if the arc had remained in the sky. Then, from about 1:30 a.m., a clearly brighter and bigger burst of sharp, fast-moving, and really relatively bright northern lights than any previous activation. Apparently "colored" rays at th...

Early night repos were left 95 percent behind the clouds as the only cloud in the sky ran across the northern horizon. Well, after midnight, bz turned negative again and the countdown started. At home, I waited for smoked salmon and potatoes to appear in the Ursa camera in Tampere. When the arc in the picture appeared I set off to drive to the observation site almost immediately .... Should usually catch up, but not this time. It certainly didn’t take long to drive home from the observation site, but the eruption was clearly already at its best when I walked to the sights. There is still a cou...

Relatively active and even relatively bright reposting behind the clouds. Around midnight it then seemed to cloud a little more.
