Eye-catching night shining clouds

21.7.2021 at 00.25 - 00.35 - Vantaa (V)
Jani Poikela, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

There were bright and wide-ranging illuminating night clouds last night.

Funnel cloud

26.6.2021 at 13.22 - 13.25 - Vantaa (II)
Jani Poikela, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

The deaf cells born on the sea wind front showed a weakly rotating lower cloud mass, where a funnel was formed for a moment under the wall cloud. The funnel was located between Klaukkala and the church village of Nurmijärvi. I went driving in the area to see if there were any signs of a vortex crossing the ground. In a few places, even large branches had flown into the road, but no fallen trees or the like.

Image of an exceptional thunder cloud

20.7.2018 at 18.10 - 18.50 - Kerava (V)
Jani Poikela, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Today, two thunder fronts passed from east to west at the SME region. The latter of these offered for many years the finest avalanche cloud that was admired with Juha Leivo in Kerava. The lightning was pretty low and you didn’t get very much water compared to that first front. Images in chronological order from oldest to newest. The last one is almost taken under the avalanche, so it already looks a bit strange panorama.

Arcus cloud

19.6.2018 at 17.30 - 19.00 - Nurmijärvi (IV)
Jani Poikela, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

After the front rain, thunderstorms occurred in the south, which I drove first to Nurmijärvi and from there to Hyvinkää. The observations were lightning, a fine avalanche cloud, hard gusts and finally more mammoths. The day surprised positively, in anticipation when there were such a few strokes of individual deaf people.

Partial lunar eclipse

7.8.2017 at 21.30 - 22.40 - Vantaa (III)
Jani Poikela, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Partial lunar eclipse photographed near the Helsinki-Vantaa field. For the initial phase, the clouds obscured the visibility, but fortunately there was still an eclipse when the moon finally rose above the clouds.

Lightning photo

29.5.2017 at 00.44 - Vantaa (III)
Jani Poikela, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Forecast models seemed to have little chance of night thunderstorms on the night between Sun and Mon. In the evening, deaf people began to appear in southwestern Finland and a few of them flickered a bit. The direction of movement of the deaf was towards the SME area, so I drove to the edge of the field with a good view to the west, from where the deaf arrived. Shortly before the SME area, a deafening new cell grew suitably deaf, and it flashed fine clouds of light across the sky. All in all, a really weak lightning flash seems to be less than ten flashes for the total amount you saw, but when...

Active aurora band

23.8.2016 at 23.20 - 00.30 - Vantaa (III)
Jani Poikela, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

The first northern lights of autumn that came to be seen. By 11pm I noticed that the outside was greening a bit so I quickly turned the camera on my back and in the car in a darker place. At first, only a green arc was visible, but between the arc, rays and rapidly moving horizontal variations in brightness were also evident. I looked at the ace satellite data and it seemed that by about 00:20 bz would throw a lot upwards. I figured that point could still brighten briskly and I headed to the local school to shoot. And they became bright, really nice and bright northern lights, and then there w...

Transit of mercury

9.5.2016 at 17.37 - Vantaa (IV)
Jani Poikela, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

The old cardboard sun visor didn’t even fit on top of the new lens. Fortunately, there was enough baader film left in the cabinet to get a new sun visor. And well that Mercury came out of there.

Quiet aurora arc

9.5.2016 at 00.20 - Vantaa (II)
Jani Poikela, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Still the last northern lights of this season. The northern skyline was already so bright in the south through the night that it could barely stand out. At times it was visible to the naked eye that high rays were rising, but really weakly they could be excavated from the pictures.

Pearl clouds

27.12.2015 at 14.40 - 16.47 - Tornio (IV)
Jani Poikela, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

I marked the observation as pearl clouds, but the more knowledgeable can tell if it is about them or just color clouds. The first picture was taken at Kemi at 2.40 pm. Small colorful clouds began to appear through the lower clouds. Another picture in about 10min. After this, the clouds began to grow rapidly and visibly. The third picture was taken at 3 p.m. The fourth picture is from Haparanda at 15.12. We left to drive north at 16:47 and the colors of the clouds were still faint in the sky even though it was already dark at the time. The clouds were thus considerably higher than the lower clo...

Other storm phenomenon

16.7.2015 at 17.15 - Vantaa (IV)
Jani Poikela, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Moments were visible for a while after a weak thunderstorm that had crossed the SME area a moment ago.

Partial solar eclipse

20.3.2015 at 11.00 - 13.15 - Järvenpää (IV)
Jani Poikela, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

In the morning the sky was cloudy so I had to go driving a little further north. Due to various misfortunes, the departure was delayed and I only had time until Järvenpää when the eclipse had already begun. Vanhankylänniemi was chosen as a place of reconnaissance and photography because of its convenient location. The whole eclipse was visible behind a thin cloud of gauze, and a 22-degree halo was visible in the cloud gauze almost throughout the eclipse. The first image could be called a landscape sun eclipse image :) The second shows the eclipse behind the welding glasses and the 22 degree ha...

At least 10 lightning strikes seen

14.8.2014 at 00.00 - 02.00 - Espoo (III)
Jani Poikela, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

A few flaps from last night's thunderstorms. We had to shave to Lohja, but we couldn't find a place to shoot there until the front came on. There was a rather strong gust of wind in front and as soon as it started to rain, small ice grains briskly. In the third picture, next to Ikea in Espoo, it hit really close and from the picture it would seem to have hit the next lamp (photographed with an 11mm focal length). The image became completely white, but the flash could still be adjusted well. The fourth image shows a magnification from that bottom. Yes, the night thunder is great to watc...

Eye-catching night shining clouds

24.7.2014 at 00.56 - Rautjärvi (V)
Jani Poikela, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

The really bright illuminating night clouds on the night between July 23-24 even went over the zenith. I managed to take a small piece of timelapse before the camera battery beeped. http://youtu.be/ZUlkvIDG1YI

Several bright halo forms

14.5.2014 at 09.42 - Vantaa (III)
Jani Poikela, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Great halo play, a pity that there is no really open place near where you could get the horizon ring properly in the pictures. Really pretty 46 pool side in vibrant colors.

Other storm phenomenon

4.5.2014 at 19.35 - Lahti (V)
Jani Poikela, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

We set off to drive home from Lahti when I noticed really big mammoths in the cloud between the trees. For a moment he already thought that they can't be, it just looks like when the rain and hailstones are mixing, but when the cloud became more visible I had to believe that there are the biggest mammoths that have ever been seen. From the first junction, leave the engine and dig out the camera. I tried to drive closer but couldn’t get a better picture when the mammoths disappeared after a while. The first two pictures from Kärkkäinen in Lahti and the third picture from the motorbike a lit...
