Arcus cloud

23.6.2021 at 14.00 - Helsinki
Pauli Jokinen

For a long time, I was able to practice shooting avalanches in Helsinki again. Maybe 15-20 m / s gusted and lifted a nice high sand cloud on the beach. I would be happy to add more of these.

Tornado

5.8.2018 at 17.50 - 18.00 - Helsinki (III)
Pauli Jokinen

A funnel first formed a funnel and a few minutes later a probable water column formed on the gust front of the cell drifted into the sea, although no surface contact was seen due to the distance.

Other special clouds

14.7.2018 at 00.24 - Helsinki (IV)
Pauli Jokinen

During the night run, there were spotting illuminating night clouds. For a few minutes, Kelvin-Helmholz waves also formed in the lower cloud strip. Luckily, there was a cell phone included, even if the decent tube had gotten finer shots.

Dim night shining clouds

Pauli Jokinen

The World Cup match ended, looking at the sky and there were already nights in the sky. Surprisingly well visible despite the early time.

Half-sky auroras

27.3.2017 at 22.15 - 22.21 - Kolari (IV)
Pauli Jokinen

The fourth time the truth says. An annual ski trip to Lapland is going on and finally we had to experience what a "northern storm of storm" really looks like. There was enough bright, dancing and vivid color glory for about ten minutes. The mouth was in brass and the camera liked. However, the power lines counterattacked in the summer way and then had to ruin a few shots. Damn when there was no project, when it would have been possible to dodge the ski slope further away. Now the obstacle was the acquisition of 80 cm of running sand. It was at the end of the best phase that the clouds began to...

Arcus cloud

19.8.2016 at 20.00 - Helsinki (IV)
Pauli Jokinen

A quick glance at the radar image showed a pretty good echo at sea -> a quick glance at the West Harbor webcam showed a avalanche cloud -> at Olympic level speed the outerwear on and the back and ranch of the bike. The avalanche that developed on the side of the deaf system pampered the photographers, as it did not come on at a rapid pace but allowed time to photograph. The laminar avalanche did not bring any rain, but enjoyed the turbulent cloud floor for many minutes after crossing it while the sunset colored the sky behind the rain. The best avalanche this summer.

The night was spent in Suomenlinna while watching the asses. Also included were the Kalevant fires in the Baltic Sea, the illuminating night clouds and the pair of owls that came to observe them. The starburst flights were commendably visible at two o'clock at night, when I counted them in about 70 hours, although some dozens went undetected due to the intermittent adjustment of the camera. The picture shows the brightest flight, which was seen as smoky in two more pictures after 10 seconds of exposure times.

Hail in the summer season

5.8.2016 at 16.50 - Mänttä-Vilppula (III)
Pauli Jokinen

A little from the bush came a small and sharp thunderstorm. In the aftermath of a fine avalanche, a downpour of about 15 m / s struck with horizontal rain. In the sea, about 1-1.5 cm of granules clicked on the windshield. Nice late summer surprise. The video clip can be found on Youtube .

At least 10 lightning strikes seen

3.8.2016 at 00.00 - 04.00 - Vaasa (IV)
Pauli Jokinen

The cold central troposphere and the relatively warm sea knew a combination that could not be refused. A drive of about 200km to Vaasa at sunset raised expectations and eventually there was almost continuous lightning for five hours. Shooting on the seashore was successful except in the rainless weather, except for the beginning, and several tiny lightning cells provided a pastime before an elevator cat came from the sea. Even though I made my departure as early as 1.30 and ended up eating for ABC, a new wave began to lighten on the horizon and so again rolled for two hours at the gas station ...

Hail in the summer season

2.8.2016 at 08.42 - Mänttä-Vilppula (III)
Pauli Jokinen

I woke up in the morning to a distant rumble. A quick glance at the radar image set in motion, and after a moment there was a vague avalanche cloud across the lake, behind which flashed in the rain wall. After a sprint under the canopy, a hailstorm of about four minutes began, with several heavier waves. Most of the granules were 0.5 cm white granules and perhaps 20-30% were translucent 1-1.5 cm ice granules. The largest granules were about 2 cm in diameter, although they were not symmetrical. For a while, with the wind and hail, fresh leaves of birch began to rain down. The home meter showed ...

Image of an exceptional thunder cloud

31.7.2016 at 17.00 - 22.00 - Mänttä-Vilppula (III)
Pauli Jokinen

Thunder clouds made it possible to see, among other things, sunset occupations, a mediocre avalanche cloud and a whale cloud cloud. Although the heaviest rains and lightning “circled” my plot, there was still clouds of admiration throughout the evening.

Arcus cloud

3.7.2016 at 15.30 - 19.40 - Parikkala (III)
Pauli Jokinen

After a two-year hiatus, the basic practices of bongaam had to be repeated a bit. A total of 900km and 14.5h hours came to practice and the balance was quite a nice violent experience despite the awkward bonga terrain. The balance was a few avalanche clouds, small hailstorms falling in the pouring rain, a lightning flash of constant flicker, an asperatus cloud, and you know how many river crossings across the eastern provinces.

Pearl clouds

4.2.2016 at 17.18 - Helsinki (III)
Pauli Jokinen

The spectacular photos of the pearl clouds from the British Isles made me go crazy, as the stratospheric temperatures had dropped to around -85 degrees in southern Finland based on soundings. After sunset, there was a fairly clear pearlescent brown in the west, but at least the spots of color that showed them were not yet visible in the sky. At the border of the city center roofs, some type 1 light streaks were visible when zoomed.

Lightning photo

17.7.2015 at 00.35 - Helsinki (II)
Pauli Jokinen

I don’t know if I should cry or laugh this thunderstorm. The first chase of the summer and also by bike to the seaside. The miracles of a few rapes moved behind the gorge in the Gulf of Finland. I guess here’s to be happy that I got at least one hair on the cell this summer. The great crawler didn't get caught when it was time to go to check the focus. The flash balance for the whole summer is now maybe something like 20-30 pcs. A few summers ago in Paimio, that number came to a full minute.

Half-sky auroras

17.3.2015 at 22.00 - Helsinki (IV)
Pauli Jokinen

For once, the bang led to results. The pulsations that came during the evening in the two waves looked awesome on the camera's cell, and even when viewed with the naked eye, the screening was not weak, despite the light pollution in Helsinki.

Funnel cloud

26.8.2014 at 15.41 - Helsinki (II)
Pauli Jokinen

In addition to the work, I had to work hard on the roof to spot any funnel clouds. Eventually, one potential creature appeared for about half a minute under a deaf cloud rising into the western sky. Due to the remote location, no rotational movement was observed in the low contrast region. In my own statistics, this goes into the category of “possible funnel cloud,” but not among certain cases.

Arcus cloud

23.8.2014 at 15.40 - Helsinki (II)
Pauli Jokinen

A thunderstorm cell from the Gulf of Finland effectively coagulated when it reached the coast, but a slightly more brisk cell cycled east over the sea. It created an avalanche that would have been nice to photograph directly, not from the side.

Image of an exceptional thunder cloud

20.8.2014 at 18.00 - Helsinki (III)
Pauli Jokinen

An oncoming thunderstorm cell arrived at the stadium from the sea, continuing a rather active thunderstorm day. A fine avalanche with teeth / beards / fingers hanging quite low, arousing even a small desire for a water column. A new cell was allowed to bloom at sea after the previous cells landed. You have to wonder about the boaters, because there are a number of sailors with a small sail in the rain wall picture (lesson in progress?). Although the thunder had signaled with a spectacular avalanche and growls for 15-30 minutes, the group did not leave the nearby harbor for safety until it was ...

Image of an exceptional thunder cloud

20.8.2014 at 14.46 - Helsinki (IV)
Pauli Jokinen

The roof of the workplace was in heavy use on Wednesday when attempts were made to bonga water columns from thunder cells arriving from the southwest. A single cell developed in front of the unitary deaf strip, with a long period of horizontal turbulence at the point of ascending flow. When the cell itself was revealed behind the moss, there was some rotation in it, based on a few eyewitnesses. Was this the beginning of a "low-top" supercell? Unfortunately, the deaf tape that followed ate this promising thunderstorm just as the situation began to become interesting. An accelerated video of tha...

The top lightning hunt again led to the capture of several asses. Even if one smoke was missed, the rest is put here for sharing.
