All-sky aurora

7.10.2015 at 21.30 - 00.00 - Turku (V)
Johannes Dahlström, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

Northern lights alarms had already exploded in the email over the course of the evening, and I decided to walk home from downtown along Koroinen’s pleasantly dark jogging path. I guessed there was activity in the northern sky, but even before I got to the open place from the shadows of the houses and trees, I was amazed to see the repo belts running across the sky to the southern sky. Activity increased rapidly until almost the entire sky was filled with flowing and fluttering green. A fine Korona appeared on the zenith for a moment. The peak of the play lasted about a quarter, after which the...

Rare halos

9.9.2015 at 15.30 - 16.15 - Kaarina, Ravattula (IV)
Johannes Dahlström, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

I was walking around the excavations in Ristimäki when the bright 22 degree YSK caught my attention. It seemed to be accompanied by an overly concave Parry - if so, this is my first Parry observation. A little later the right side sun came on and after a while also the left, which for a moment became almost dazzlingly bright. At the same time, the horizon ring came out. I guess you might also see some Lowitz with the saurs, but I'm not sure if it's just a basic 22 °.

Spotted on a beach trip. I’m not sure if that inner ring is 9r or pollen.

Bright night shining clouds

19.7.2016 at 01.50 - Turku (IV)
Johannes Dahlström, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

My first handsome night cloud sighting this summer. The play caught my attention from the window, and I had to leave the river bank. Pictured is a view to the northeast.

Pearl clouds

24.12.2017 at 15.15 - 16.20 - Tampere (IV)
Johannes Dahlström, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Now it is annoying that the windows and balcony of the apartment face to the southeast. Half of the sunset play stood out pretty accurately, but at least the glasses on the balcony mirrored the sky beautifully.

Bright night shining clouds

28.7.2018 at 02.30 - 03.00 - Tampere (IV)
Johannes Dahlström, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

Awakening after the lunar eclipse was rewarded with a rather handsome night cloud play. The western sky showed so much activity from my south-eastern balcony that I had to grab some shooting equipment and go cycling on the adjacent Armonkalli, which offers quite good views to the north over Lake Näsijärvi. There was no pointless trip. When he returned home, the cloud show had already rested far into the southeastern sky (last picture).

Arcus cloud

20.6.2017 at 21.08 - Tampere (IV)
Johannes Dahlström, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

I was just getting home from the city when I noticed a spectacular cloud formation flowing from the northern Näsijärvi behind the apartment building. Of course, the phone's battery flickered just as I was trying to take a panoramic picture of the revelation, but I still got one flicker before that. I hurried up to get the right camera, but when I got back out, the cloud was already moving at a good pace and the showy leading edge was no longer visible. The cloud was accompanied by a characteristic gusty wind and small drizzle.

Reflected sunbeams

19.6.2014 at 21.49 - Rääkkylä (IV)
Johannes Dahlström

In a boat on Pyhäselä moving north towards Tikansaari for Midsummer. Photo taken in the direction of the setting sun.

Primary rainbow

22.8.2017 at 20.50 - 21.00 - Tampere (IV)
Johannes Dahlström, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

I admired the cityscape painted orange in the last rays of the setting sun from my balcony when, to my delight, I noticed from the left that the rainbow was beginning to draw against the rainy sky. Within minutes, a beautiful, almost perfect semicircle of evening color had developed. Afterwards, as I was working on the photos, I also noticed a faint part of the side rainbow that I hadn’t seen with the naked eye.

Primary rainbow

31.7.2020 at 20.28 - Tampere (IV)
Johannes Dahlström, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Let's look out the window at just the right time. The spectacular perfect double arc shortened to just under 90 degrees just a moment after the panoramic shot was taken.

Reflected primary rainbow

19.8.2020 at 19.30 - 19.50 - Tampere (IV)
Johannes Dahlström, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Rainbow bowling again from your own balcony. A perfect, colorful main rainbow, but no side rainbow could be seen with the naked eye. However, on the left side of the panoramic image, it just barely separates the opaque snippet. Instead, the vertical light phenomenon rising from the right end of the main rainbow caught my attention. Reflective rainbow! A small examination of the map confirmed my suspicion that the source of the reflection was tiny Iidesjärvi, slightly southeast of the center of Tampere. It seems that its shape relative to the sun and my own location just rightly happened to alm...

Kuu, Venus ja Mars

4.1.2017 at 16.20 - Tampere (IV)
Johannes Dahlström, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

A trio in the twilight sky photographed from their own balcony. Mars is dim but still visible (very weak though in the image scaled down by the Sky Guard!)

Landscape image of a planet

18.7.2018 at 01.20 - Tampere (IV)
Johannes Dahlström, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

Extinction and bright nights undeniably diminish the splendor of opposition Mars as it pops into the low southern sky, but it’s still nice to stare at it. In the picture, the planet poses together with the tower of Tampere Cathedral.

ISS

20.7.2018 at 00.06 - 00.13 - Tampere (IV)
Johannes Dahlström, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

The International Space Station revolves around Finland's southern sky at midnight for a change, and what if you watch it from your own balcony. The image is composed of 188 exposures taken every second.

Venus ja Seulaset (M45)

4.4.2020 at 21.30 - 23.30 - Tampere (IV)
Johannes Dahlström, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

I read about the encounter too late to get to the edge on Friday night, but luckily it was also clear on Saturday and Venus in an even more eye-pleasing place as an extension of the Pleiadian "bucket arm". When I got to my backyard on Masuuninmäki after nine, Venus shone bright and the stars of Seulaste were just igniting. There was a thin thin cloud of gauze in the sky that created a circle around Venus - and a distinctly elliptical one like the one I saw after I saw it! A nice surprise addition to the evening's findings. I tested different focal lengths and exposure settings in my time u...

Kuu, Jupiter ja Saturnus

7.7.2020 at 01.20 - 01.40 - Tampere (IV)
Johannes Dahlström, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

The cloud situation in the southern sky didn’t look particularly promising, but it did happen that by half past two the whole trio had time to show up before covering up behind a larger cloud area. Photographed from the home balcony.

Active aurora band

28.8.2015 at 23.30 - Turku (III)
Johannes Dahlström

I sat in the evening in Kurala Village with the students of ancient technology when the green spots in the northern sky caught our attention. The northern lights were true indeed, and brightened and activated at a rapid pace as we ran to a more open place to look. A handsome but short-lived play. It is a pity that the lens selected for a completely different purpose was not very fading for repo photography other than for its luminous intensity, and no tripod was included.

Active aurora band

6.10.2015 at 23.00 - Turku (III)
Johannes Dahlström, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

I was already going to sleep when I had to glance from the balcony to the sky in the hope of the repos once again. And they were visible, easily with the naked eye. Out to the riverbank to stare and then just describe!

Several bright halo forms

7.5.2014 at 12.40 - Turku (III)
Johannes Dahlström

And more! The 22-degree ring brightened significantly compared to the morning, and a pretty whole-sky horizon ring also appeared. If only you had a sensible and wide-angle lens included ...

Partial lunar eclipse

16.7.2019 at 23.05 - 23.45 - Tampere (III)
Johannes Dahlström, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

Observed from home balcony. I feared that the eclipse would be covered in clouds when the moon was not visible in the eleven countries. However, Jupiter shone bright, which confused the moment until the moon appeared behind the Tower Hotel! I had started staring at the sky at just the wrong minute. End well, all well anyway.
