The asteroid was discovered by the German astronomer August Kopff (1882-1960) on January 28, 1909 at the Heidelberg Observatory. August Kopff has found comets 22P / Kopff and C / 1906 E1 and 68 asteroids. The asteroid is named after the Roman mythology of the peace god Pax.
