Perseids

15.8.2022 at 22.19 - 03.42 - Jyväskylä (II)
Harri Kiiskinen, Jyväskylän Sirius

Perseids are still visible, but clearly less than at the weekend. Last night, occasional cloud patches and a bright, shining Moon slightly hindered the observation. Edit 16.8.2022 at 21:00: Added GIF animation from 2:35-2:38 of the moving satellite.

The very beginning of this last night's flight of the roach in the southeast probably remained behind the upper floors of the building, but still the most impressive single Perseid on my cameras this year.

After two active nights, the activity of the Perseids has declined, but if the weather permits, there will be a good chance to observe shooting stars in the coming nights as well.

Three Perseids today too. My balcony camera had caught two of them among the light pollution and I shot one in the field. The old cameraman on the balcony had taken 1118 wide-angle pictures, and only two had Perseid. To my delight, I noticed that the Starlink hose remained in that camera as well. I have my own opinion about Starlinks.

During the first flyby of the Starlink tube , I rapped 1.6 sec exposures at 2 sec intervals for 18 minutes. During that time, the camera registered 4 Perseids. (Retinas none). Attached is a collage of them. (A modest collection, but on the other hand, I wouldn't have bothered to target many more with a hand game :) Also included are 100% partial enlargements.

Up to three different angles were found for this representative of the Perseids seen in the southeast direction. In the beginning of the third video clip, there is also a point-like flash from a so far unidentified source. A partial enlargement of the video shows the source of the flash to be quite round in shape.

The following night was also spent outside watching shooting stars, because the weather was perfect for that. You could see them and I think better than at maximum night. A couple of really bright ones were visible now. The camera was rattling, although less than the night before. Almost a dozen perseids were found in the cell, I put the most spectacular ones in this case.

The maximum Perseid night was spent looking at the clouds, when I managed to choose the almost only cloudy place in Finland. The night after the maximum seemed promising, but didn't a thin cloud begin to rise from the north. Hopefully, I followed to see if there would be aurora after all, but no. At the same time, the Moon began to shine from the southeast. A couple of nights earlier, the Moon would have been so low that it wouldn't have hurt much. Now it hurts faster and higher every night. At the same time, the temperature dropped towards the dew point, so that all surfaces began to ...

A fast meteor observed in the southeast direction. Just before the meteor, in the center of the image, you can see a point-like flash. These are constantly stored in different appearances and sizes, and usually you are left wondering what it is about. Satellite Blink? A meteor coming towards the observer?

A tiny camera captured this one shooting star, probably related to the Perseid maximum. Little by little, the nights are getting darker here in the north as well.

Tuikku Asikainen, Porin Karhunvartijat

During two nights of five-hour work, I could see a good couple of dozen Perseids, i.e. more than I have ever managed to see. I took 1300 pictures and the poor two grabbed the camera, these pictures on August 13 after midnight. It's always nice to stay awake at night and tensely wait for shooting stars, so I'm not complaining.

The Perseids were visible to some extent and finally the rocket launch and its impressively spectacular passage through the sky stole the whole show. The first and second pictures are of the same Perseid, which left an afterglow in the sky for a while. The triple image has a severely cropped gif animation of it. In the quadrilateral, Perseid appears next to the rocket cloud.

Regardless, I thought I'd give it a try if you could see the Perseids. It was pretty bad, apparently the sky was somehow cloudy and the seeing wasn't the best. The moon was full, fortunately low, but it still hindered observation. I think I saw a dozen Perseids myself, I caught three on camera. It wasn't a spectacle.

I put the camera on the balcony opening to the south-southeast to shoot in case a Perseid happened to flash in the sky. I myself focused more on observing the planets. The result of the less than four-hour session was 3 observed Perseids, the brightest of which (below) hit at 2:07 near Jupiter. Not a very strange catch, then. The 1st picture is a crop of the second one.

I stacked (maximum stack) videos from the north and south cameras of the Kaupi tower from two and three hours in about 5-minute chunks. The stacks are compiled in chronological order into a video animation. Observation time interval for the northern camera: 00:09 - 03:09 and for the southern camera 23:18 - 03:04. About 60 perseids accumulated in the pictures of the northern camera, and considerably less in the direction of the south, where the moon is brighter. Both sets of images show the line of Starlink satellites as a bright and wide line. A couple of fireballs were also included.

The bread type of the summer, i.e. sun photography, has suffered from weather problems and there have been no pictures due to the clouds. Even though there was a full moon at the time of the Perseids, I decided that the best thing to do was just make coffee and go when the weather was good. The forecasts showed cloudiness in the interior (I had thought of going from Espoo to Askola like last years or to Tähtikallio), so the plan had to be changed quickly. So the destination is Emäsalo in Porvoo. At the observation site in the outdoor recreation area, the parking lots were full and there was a ...

I meant to put the camera on the south-facing balcony to film on the night of the maximum Perseids, but nothing came of it because of the bright Moon. Change of plans: visual observation on the trampoline. I was going to sleep in that warm night, but at least I cheered up for a while when the first bang was a really nice spear in the south at 11:29 p.m. from ten or eleven to four or five. Lasts max 1 second, I think red and green were clearly visible. Tiredness struck quite quickly, however, and I couldn't control myself any longer, so I set the camera to shoot four-second exposures of the...

Observing the Perseids around Joutjärvi in Lahti a little before the maximum. It was already blowing nicely. The northern lights and illuminating night clouds brought their own addition. Even the bat had a bevel on the surface of the lake. Ps. The map on the observation report page threw an error message, which meant that the location could not be defined.

Number of Perseids per night, increase at maximum. Now the camera captured a total of eight flights of the Perseids. Some of them were common to the two cameras. At radio frequencies (also) the reflections were quite good, although statistics could not be done, since the signal was not continuous in the 6m beacon area. In addition, the aurora propagation of the radio signal masked the weaker meteor echoes below...

We went on a fireball hunt with a friend in a neighboring village. After a little over one, three fireballs were seen pretty much one after the other, luckily the most beautiful of them stayed on the cell and caused a small-scale calabalik with the upper femmes in the dark Lausti. The warm summer night in the rye field went well, there was a lot to see. Jupiter, illuminating night clouds and the best possible company. That's what gentle August nights are made of.

Even though the camera is in a slightly bad position, you can see more of the stars of the Perseids when you go towards the maximum. Last night three flights came from the north. Some may also have remained covered behind the night cloud area. Four possible Perseids and a few sporadic ones came into the picture. Individual dots may be traces of cosmic rays on the camera sensor. Additional pictures show the initial and final situation.
