Clearly visible night shining clouds

6.8.2022 at 00.43 - 03.42 - Kouvola (III)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Low-lying night clouds observed by machine vision. In the first photo, roughly the best belt phase at 2:19, in the second photo the main part of the waves at 2:45. As a three-shot, the whole set with fast-forward (a literally phlegmatic 40 sec interval).

First, only 22r, later with 46r, which came out weak from the hand stack of five pictures.

Bright night shining clouds

5.8.2022 at 01.05 - 02.24 - Mikkeli (I)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

The cottage yard is covered in all directions, and when I got a little tired, I didn't feel like looking at the night sky. However, a compelling need woke me up in the middle of my sleep, and when I poked my head out of the tent, I was positively surprised by the darkness and the number of stars. There was some brightness in the northern sky echoing through the forest, and when I walked to the road, which opens up a slightly better view to the northwest, it was confirmed that there are some night clouds there (picture 1). As I packed up a bit along the road, I got a little more visibility,...

Antisolar rays

2.8.2022 at 20.57 - 21.11 - Kouvola (III)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Somasti shines the rays in the blue sky. It was time to head to the top of Mielaka's ski slope after eating the kite along Finland's largest rag rug painting. It was so overcast that I thought the calories wouldn't be offset by one puff, but that's okay, because from the top there was a great view of the rays of the clouds (picture 1). On the way down, I still had to snap a few pictures of the rays, when the photographer's long shadow nicely bumped against the cloud rays (photo 2) and when the photographer noticed that the sky is like the letter S (yes, only at this point.....

Primary rainbow

After a heavy downpour, it took a long time before the Sun could shine on the back edge of the rain shower and ignite the weak statistical arc.

Noctilucent clouds visible between clouds

2.8.2022 at 01.53 - 03.35 - Kouvola (III)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

The sky was very tenaciously overcast, but I was optimistic and left the camera to shoot at leisurely half-minute intervals of the northern sky. If even later the clouds would recede and spoil the night cloud spectacle. The camera shot from 0:14 to 4:15 and on the back screen, flashing the catch, you could see that a couple of times there had been holes in the cloud cover, but no illuminating night clouds could be separated from them. Later on, a positive observation about Kuhmo appeared at night and it inspired me to look at my own pictures a little more closely. And just yes: when I reduced ...

The lower part of 22r stood out as a vague arc. With image processing, it was completed into an almost full circle (picture 1). A little later, the ring became visible as a whole (picture 2).

Bright night shining clouds

31.7.2022 at 01.32 - Kouvola (IV)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

I missed several noises when my cell phone was on silent and I only noticed at half past one that there was a bright show going on in the north. I took a handheld shot from the window (picture 1, 1.32) just in case of low clouds. With a little delay (the previous sighting report was unfinished) I got to the yard with the skunk and by then the dreaded attack had already taken place (picture 2, 0.49). I followed the situation for a while and concluded that tonight the camera can rest, so the last observation was a cell phone picture of a very small crack from which the bright light was still dri...

Primary rainbow

30.7.2022 at 20.45 - 21.04 - Kouvola (II)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

While driving home from Cygnus, I noticed a dim rainbow and, as if by order, immediately after the spread where the car was parked and the arch was collected. I continued on my way observing the arch, but it faded away quite suddenly into non-existence until at a field opening I could momentarily see a quite bright patch of the arch at the base of the arch, delineated by an anti-cloud beam (picture 2). I continued without stopping and drove about a kilometer "long", to the Keskikoski bridge, from which there would have been the next unobstructed view to the base of the arch. The base had just ...

Bright night shining clouds

29.7.2022 at 23.30 - 01.54 - Kouvola (IV)

I was already going to sleep when I noticed Matti Helin's commotion about the lights. I went to look out the window and it was visible here too. The ambush shift was again on camera (once again, have I missed an ambush shift??). Attached are a couple of pictures of the moments when the low clouds are not that bad in front (at 0.16 and 1.34) and a timelapse from 23.54 to 2.06 (continued from that as a not-so-descriptive low cloud avalanche, I cut it shorter).

When paddling, a very weak 22r was bumped. From Järkkäri's raw image, pre-excavating it would have been a piece of cake, i.e. easy cake, but the basic cell's .jpg doesn't show mercy.

Clearly visible night shining clouds

23.7.2022 at 23.34 - 02.15 - Kouvola (III)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

23.34 first observation of lights in the northern sky, peeking through the window. I went to the yard to take a closer look: there were a few stronger belts in the north (photo 1, 23.52), but there was more coarse stuff at least from the northwest to the northeast, maybe up to a height of about 50 degrees. I spread more foaming to the camera's trunk and it had continued undeterred into the wee hours even though the low clouds had played the main role. To be sure, night clouds were found in the picture until about 2:15. Even later, when the alpine clouds retreated a little, light structures...

Bright night shining clouds

22.7.2022 at 23.55 - 03.00 - Kouvola (IV)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

I noticed the noise of Pentti Arpalahti from the slightly bigger show just before midnight and indeed there were quite bright night clouds in the northern sky and they reached quite high. I went from the yard to grab a couple of shots and even if I was sleepy, I would still pedal to the nearest pier with the camera. A handsome raft of fine night cloud curls from the west northwest to the north was just the right direction for the water reflection. A group of a few sharp and straight belts remained outside the picture area to the southeast. While the camera was rattling, I amused myself with th...

Rare halos

21.7.2022 at 14.05 - 15.52 - Kouvola (IV)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

I watched the sky while I was on yard work hoping for halos, but it seemed empty. At one point I could see a very faint arch above but I wasn't sure if there was anything there or if I was just imagining it. In the lands of two, I took a (filming) break when it looked like there might actually be something there, an upper side or upper 23 degree parhel. I took a stack of 13 pictures and got back to work. Less than a couple of hours later, there was a place for another filming break, when the arch above was visible a notch more clearly. This time 16 pictures to stack. In the attached pictur...

Clearly visible night shining clouds

19.7.2022 at 23.55 - 00.55 - Kouvola (III)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Just before midnight I saw faint night clouds in the northern sky. I went to take a picture from the yard a couple of times. Figure 1 at 0:13. Figure 2 at 0:54. At 1:45 a.m. nothing was visible anymore when I looked out the window.

I noticed the right end of the rainbow from the window on the south side, which disappeared before I could get my cell phone ready to shoot and the balcony door open. I checked the window on the east side and the left end was still visible.
