All-sky aurora

3.9.2022 at 23.00 - 03.00 - Enontekiö, Kilpisjärvi (V)
Dennis Lehtonen

I went to the fells in the afternoon to see the fallow and ended up grilling on the porch of Saanajärvi. It was forecast to be clear for the evening, so I sat there for several hours waiting for darkness. In practice, as soon as the sky darkened a little, you could see bright arcs in every direction. Sometimes after midnight there were many different colors and for a moment the bright northern lights covered almost 100% of the surface of the sky. At two in the morning I went home to walk in the dark and during the whole 5km journey there were some skylights here and there.

You can see them again. The first of the season and surprisingly bright stood out against the relatively pale sky. From the balcony, around midnight, I caught a glimpse of the green in the southern sky, from which I took a small documentary photo and happily smiled. However, the threshold for going out was not exceeded at that point. A moment later, the sky came pouring down my neck and I decided to go to the neighboring Tsahkaljärvi to photograph. The biggest fires were visible along the way, but there was still something to see there too. This is a good place to start.

Primary rainbow

16.8.2022 at 21.00 - 22.00 - Enontekiö, Kilpisjärvi (IV)

I was going to the mountains with my camera equipment mainly to test the new lens and to think about its use in autumn northern lights photography and different angles. I have lived in Kilpisjärvi for approx. 6 weeks now. Immediately after leaving home, however, there was quite a spectacular rainbow in the sky from which I took a couple of pictures. The last one is a five-image panorama. I haven't seen many curves this summer, is this the third one?

Half-sky auroras

Coincidentally, an old school friend came back more than ten years ago in a group of northern lights. A couple of words were changed and since he also started his hobby of star and northern lights, of course he wanted to see fire in Lapland. I myself had dreamed of shooting under the northern lights of Saana for a long time, so it was decided to go to Kilpisjärvi together during the spring equinox. I got the picture on the first day, because it was clear. We walked around Lake Tsahkaljärvi looking for a good place to work. There was no northern lights at all all early in the evening, only a li...

All-sky aurora

13.3.2022 at 19.00 - 03.00 - Sodankylä (V)
Dennis Lehtonen

There was a lot of life in the northern lights curves during the day and the going on for hours. As soon as the sky dimmed even a little, big lights were visible above the head against the dimly lit sky. These fires then fled for a long time to the southern sky. Occasionally they always came overhead, but in the northern sky they just didn’t feel comfortable. At some point they went so south that there was no more northern lights in the sky. At its best, Bz was -24nT and stayed there for probably half an hour. The k-value of Kiruna was 8 sometimes at 02 times.

All-sky aurora

12.2.2022 at 20.00 - 02.00 - Sodankylä (V)
Dennis Lehtonen

Pink was the theme of tonight. It was abundant in the sky, at least in the early evening. At the time, I spent a couple of hours in the middle of the swamp in the fresh -30 degree weather. I refined, but I didn't manage to stay any longer and I left home when the big shows ran out at that time. Last night when it went a little unnecessarily long with the northern lights (6h). Well, however, I regretted this decision quite a lot later, as the sky came time pouring down my neck and lasted for hours. All this time I found out that it is pointless to go there again after 20 minutes and there i...

A few northern lights have already been seen this year, but I have never seen such red ones. I was leaving for the sauna early in the evening until I watched the northern lights curves that had made a complete turn abruptly. Isoa was promised and I went to fill the forest again. I stood for a couple of quarters, the eye didn’t see anything at that point but the camera noticed huge and reddish arches high in the sky. There was no green guy. I thought something big was coming and it didn’t take long for the sky to fall on my neck. At some point, the fires went south for the holidays when the onl...

Light pillars

I was already going to sleep, but I still glanced out the window and saw quite a few pillars of light. I went to the backyard to take a couple of documentaries and big northern lights were visible in the sky at the same time.

All-sky aurora

25.1.2022 at 18.00 - 23.30 - Sodankylä (V)
Dennis Lehtonen

During the day I bongailed the pearl clouds and as soon as I got home I looked at the northern lights curves and looked promising. It wasn't even very dark, so dim red light appeared in the Sodankylä sky camera. The intention was to go in search of a better place to spend the day, because I still didn't know where to have a good relationship. light-free and open place close to home. But there were signs of a big show in the sky, so I went to the same lousy but familiar forest next to the light pollution. At some point, very nice big reddish lights were visible there. The man met the do...

Pearl clouds

25.1.2022 at 15.00 - 16.00 - Sodankylä (III)
Dennis Lehtonen

I watched the sky from the Sodankylä sky camera all the time at sunrise and sunset. Today at about 3 p.m., it looked a bit like little pearls in the sky. Fillari suddenly from the warehouse and pedaled less than 2km to the bridge over the Kitisenjoki. It looked pretty good from there, even though they were pretty low. A longer focal length lens would have been a luxury, but the phone quality is going up. I think type 2 clouds appeared next to these, but I didn’t focus on them.

It was cloudy in the afternoon, but sometime around 3pm it was completely clear and the sun was setting so I went on a business trip and with that I watched if the pearls were visible and something seemed to be visible.

All-sky aurora

14.1.2022 at 18.00 - 02.00 - Sodankylä (V)
Dennis Lehtonen

It was an evening. By 18 o'clock I was already starting to worry, as the predicted clear night looked a little desperate as the sky was in a cloud and I was pessimistic. At that time, there would have been little northern lights in the sky that I didn’t see. Fortunately, the sky became clearer when quite large northern lights entered the stage. I chose a highway that was only a couple of hundred feet north of my apartment. There I photographed for the first two hours when I later found a good spot on the banks of the Kitisenjoki. There were a lot of big fires even before midnight, includin...

All-sky aurora

2.1.2022 at 23.30 - 00.00 - Sodankylä (V)
Dennis Lehtonen

The clouds were forecast all night, so I watched the situation in the sky quite lazily, even though I knew there was life in the northern lights curves. An evening went by at Netflix, and at some point, however, I glanced at the Sodankylä sky camera, and there was a clear spaghetti monster in the sky. At that point, there was a rush. Pictures from my own yard, the lights would go out if I ran 200m further north, but in that situation I didn't dare to go anywhere but I focused on shooting in a bit of bad conditions.

Half-sky auroras

1.1.2022 at 06.00 - 07.00 - Sodankylä (IV)

New Year's fireworks in Lapland style. The first of the year and also the first here after moving. I woke up by chance at 6 in the morning and looked at the sky from the window. It was already possible to see the big bright lights above the street lamps. In that situation, I didn’t bother to put on my outerwear and run out of lamps but a bathrobe on in the yard. About a couple hundred meters north so the bulbs would run out.

Half-sky auroras

6.12.2021 at 01.00 - 02.00 - Salla (IV)
Dennis Lehtonen

Curves and northern lights cameras watched along the evening. At times I even took a look at the situation and there have been hours of fire, but very little interest in going out with the camera. In it, a little after midnight, the arches started to get more height so I went out to the lake 500m away to wait for their brightening. And it didn't take long for it to brighten up, but after a few minutes it was already dim. At best, they covered perhaps 80% of the sky. I took some selfies, I just can't decide what I like the most.

3.12.2021 at 19.00 - 22.30 - Salla (III)
Dennis Lehtonen

There was again an atmosphere of four hours standing in the snow. The first repos could be seen sometime around 5 pm, but I didn't go anywhere before 7 pm. There is a snowmobile route 1 km south of the center of Salla. Of course, not the best area in terms of light pollution, but a short distance and just fine snowy trees in the swamp area. The lights were quite bright but mostly stable. Of course, there was a lot of movement from time to time. The frost meter showed -24 when he got home. Predict even -38 for tomorrow.

Light pillars

I went outside to take out the trash and noticed bright individual rays in the southern sky. A little puzzled, I wonder if there is a northern lights? However, the curves weren’t so promising, so I found that option quite unlikely. I turned my gaze toward the center of the municipality and noticed a rather tense beam. I thought there were even great artificial light pillars. I went to take a picture of the driveway and sent it to the telegram group. Miettinen Ville pointed out that there would be map halves. From this I rejoiced somewhat and set off to run towards the center where the rays of ...

Active aurora band

28.11.2021 at 21.00 - 23.15 - Salla (III)

Today there were great bright northern lights that covered about half the sky. Unfortunately, the clouds covered the other half of it and later both. The outside gauge showed -27 degrees and the camera's batteries are pretty weak, as they clot quickly. I didn't bother 100m beyond the backyard to leave.
