A fireball at night, as bright as a crescent moon

30.10.2022 at 03.54 - Vesanto (III)
Timo Kuhmonen

Last night's fireball. At the end of the flight, there was one bright flash that lit up a slightly wider area than the sky. The more accurate timestamp of the flash is 00:53:48.2 UTC. There was no radio detection of this....

A fireball at night, brighter than the venus

18.10.2022 at 22.55 - Vesanto (III)
Timo Kuhmonen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Fireball from Vesanto's cameras last night. It is probably the same as in Haukiputaa's observation (no. 110061). It was seen on Vesanno very low in the north direction, in the picture the fireball is moving down to the left. Radio observations were also on, at least Pirttikoski's OH9SIX beacon shows a rapid increase in the signal level at that time. Nothing similar was seen at the other lighthouses in the northern direction...

A fireball at night, brighter than the venus

8.10.2022 at 21.37 - Vesanto (III)
Timo Kuhmonen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

The fireball in question had also caught Vesanto's camera, exact time 18:37:35 UTC. Part of the flight was invisible, I estimated the duration to be around 4 seconds. There was no radio observation from this (50MHz radio amateur beacons in the north). The camera also had a grating film for meteor spectra, but no trace was visible.

A fireball at night, brighter than the venus

7.10.2022 at 03.09 - Vesanto (III)
Timo Kuhmonen

Fireball in the morning hours. Seen in the middle of the north and north-west in the low sky. At the same time, a trace was found in the radio observations, probably originating from this fireball. The reflection was only found on the frequency of the OH9SIX beacon (Pirttikoski). On other frequencies of beacons in the northern direction (e.g. northern Norway) no reflection was seen. Judging from the video, there has also been an aurora borealis low in the northern sky...

A fireball at night, brighter than the venus

22.9.2022 at 05.01 - Vesanto (III)
Timo Kuhmonen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

The fireball spotted by Vesanto's northern cameras last night. The stick hit both cameras. The direction is roughly estimated between north and northwest. Timestamps below according to kamera2. The total duration will probably be a little longer than this, maybe 0.5s more. The first part of the flight was hidden behind the branches, at the end it seemed as if you could see through the cloud cover. start, 02:01:40.4 UT end, 02:01:42.5 UT Radio observations (Pirttikoski, OH9SIX, 50.417MHz) did not find a clear echo of this...

A fireball at night, brighter than the venus

4.9.2022 at 03.27 - Vesanto (III)
Timo Kuhmonen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Last night's fireball from Vesanno. What was seen in the northern direction hit both cameras. For camera #2 , the detection time was 00:27:23.7 UTC (it is a bit brighter in this camera) At the same time, listening to the amateur radio beacon in the 50 MHz range was on. At the same time, the Rovaniemi / Pirttikoski beacon - OH9SIX - got a fast and clear signal increase. The total duration of the echo was around 40 seconds, after which the beacon's signal began to fade. I would consider it likely that the RF reflection would come from the coil of the fireball in the picture, the coil wou...

A fireball at night, brighter than the venus

2.9.2022 at 04.22 - Vesanto (III)
Timo Kuhmonen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Last night's fireball from automatic cameras. The sky had already started to lighten as the sun rose. Between north and north-west this one brighter flight observed. Radio echo observations were not on last night. As for camera #2 , the bar is a little more visible because the camera has a more sensitive sensor. Partly left behind the trees, total duration approximately 2.5s.

Perseids

13.8.2022 at 21.59 - 04.39 - Vesanto (III)
Timo Kuhmonen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Last night there was a slight increase in the number of Persids. Attached as a model example, camera 1 stack from the whole night. A few meteors remain covered by the clear sky when stacked according to the maximum. As seen by the second camera, a moth, maybe a moth...

Perseids

11.8.2022 at 22.06 - 04.34 - Vesanto (III)
Timo Kuhmonen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Number of Perseids per night, increase at maximum. Now the camera captured a total of eight flights of the Perseids. Some of them were common to the two cameras. At radio frequencies (also) the reflections were quite good, although statistics could not be done, since the signal was not continuous in the 6m beacon area. In addition, the aurora propagation of the radio signal masked the weaker meteor echoes below...

Perseids

9.8.2022 at 22.00 - 04.00 - Vesanto (III)
Timo Kuhmonen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Even though the camera is in a slightly bad position, you can see more of the stars of the Perseids when you go towards the maximum. Last night three flights came from the north. Some may also have remained covered behind the night cloud area. At radio frequencies (also) - e.g. 6m beacons - there are meteor reflections, but during many nights they have been covered under the progress of the Aurora signal...

Quiet aurora band

8.8.2022 at 22.00 - 04.00 - Vesanto (II)
Timo Kuhmonen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

The aurora as seen by a fireball camera. The timelapse sequence covers the times 22:00...22:30 UTC. The aurora borealis was a bit muted in the clear sky, partially burnt out on the camera cell due to the brighter sky. The shapes of the northern lights can be seen above the tree... At the same time, radio observations of the whole night are also on display, i.e. the progression of the Aurora signal (6m radio beacons). Marked with a red arrow in the picture is the center of the timelapse sequence (OH9SIX lighthouse). Other beacons were hardly heard during the night in question...

Aurora rays

8.8.2022 at 00.57 - Vesanto (III)
Timo Kuhmonen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Fireball cam catch from last night. The timelapse sequence was not turned on at night, the trigger went according to the car driving by :-) Fortunately, the aurora lights visible at the same time caught the camera's sensor. Because of the trees, not all forms of aurora borealis could be seen properly, there may have been more of them. There was no tracking on the radio frequencies (propagation of the Aurora signal)

A fireball in a twilight sky

9.5.2022 at 00.07 - Vesanto (III)
Timo Kuhmonen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Fireball camera catch from last night. As the sky brightens, the camera's recognition begins to decrease. Some of the brightest may still be recorded. The video lasted 0.5sec.

Half-sky auroras

14.4.2022 at 20.45 - 22.35 - Vesanto (IV)
Timo Kuhmonen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

The title is because no better (kaan) category can be found ... Tastings of today's geomagnetic activity. Auroras FMI gauges are already glowing red. While it's still bright as we write this, a small snippet of a 50MHz radio beacon signal is displayed - coming in very loud through the Aurora reflector throughout the evening. Electrification keys are probably in active use in many places :-) This is OH9SIX, the Pirttikoski radio beacon. This signal is marked with a red arrow in the figure. Other frequencies in the range come from, for example, the interfering LTE connection box ... The ...

A fireball at night, brighter than the venus

20.3.2022 at 01.29 - Vesanto (III)
Timo Kuhmonen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Recordings of a fireball camera from Vesanto last night. This lasted 2.3s - part of the flight behind the trees. It may be that in reality it is probably closer to 3s in duration. Progressing down the picture to the right ... timestamps from video: beginning, 23: 29: 16.2 UT end, 23: 29: 18.5 UT

A fireball at night, as bright as a crescent moon

28.2.2022 at 21.37 - Vesanto (III)
Timo Kuhmonen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Vesanto from the catch of a fireball camera, about less than a week ago. There are a few other (also) pictorial observations of this in Vahti. The flight was quite handsome, the duration of the video was 5.6sec. The bright flight is a little longer overall, as the beginning was hidden behind the branches of the trees. No radio echo was received from this fireball in the 50MHz range (Pirttikoski's 6m radio beacon OH9SIX was listening).

A fireball at night, brighter than the venus

22.2.2022 at 22.39 - Vesanto (III)
Timo Kuhmonen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Fireball camera catch from last night. It seemed the flight was fast, moving down the left in the picture. Did not appear as a radio echo in the 50MHz radio beacon range ...

Auroras seen through breaks in the clouds

9.2.2022 at 20.00 - 06.00 - Vesanto (III)
Timo Kuhmonen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

The observation was placed in the "northern lights cloud cloud" category when no more suitable one was found. It’s about last night’s space tracking on radio frequencies. The target is the 50MHz amateur radio beacon OH9SIX (Pirttikoski). The receiver was in Vesanto at the time of the experiment. When monitored on radio frequencies, "Aurora activity" remained relatively subdued. At the OH9SIX beacon frequency, the propagation of this form was observed: 22: 37-22: 48 UT (clearer) 22: 52-22: 53 UT (clearer) 01: 14-01: 28 UT (weak) The summary image shows the time from 22:30 to 23:10 UT (OH9SIX li...
