Quiet aurora band

18.11.2022 at 21.25 - 23.00 - Taipalsaari (II)
Terhi Törmälä

On Friday evening, when the weather and space weather looked good, I went to the beach to see if I could see the northern lights. And you could see them. I was a little late at the start of the substorm, but nothing can be done. While looking at the first pictures from the back screen of the camera, I wondered if RAGDA or several diffuse arcs were in the sky, it was hard to say because the clouds were moving at a furious speed, being torn by the strong wind from east to west over the arc. Looking at the pictures on the computer, I decided that they are probably arches and not so much RAGDA-rel...

Quiet aurora arc

30.10.2022 at 21.15 - 22.30 - Taipalsaari (II)
Terhi Törmälä

For once, it was really clear and the repo values looked moderate, so I had to go and see it. A little fun relatively low in the sky. Just when it seemed that the substorm would start properly, everything slowed down and dimmed. False start? The aerial glow was almost the most spectacular element of the night. A separate havis from that. Camera in summer time, so the EXIF data doesn't match.

I went to photograph the northern lights, but the reddish, visible, aerial glow almost stole the show.

A fireball at night, brighter than the venus

23.10.2022 at 21.39 - Taipalsaari (III)
Terhi Törmälä

While waiting for yesterday's aurora borealis, I was describing the arc of the aurora borealis for fun when suddenly I saw a bright, white ball of fire which seemed to be almost flowing slowly towards the northern sky - it went out by fading, the color turned slightly yellowish before going out. It was a wonderful revelation. I didn't hear the sound because the wind in Saimaa was 7 m/s and the noise of the waves and the wind covered all the other edges. I also got the picture and checked the camera's time on my cell phone right away, that's why there is almost no throw.

Active aurora band

23.10.2022 at 20.20 - 01.50 - Taipalsaari (III)
Terhi Törmälä

Unfortunately I was late due to the first substorm of the evening, but all in all a great night in a long time. (Exactly a month ago, I last photographed repos from a cloud gap) In the first picture, the dunes shortly before the start of the second substorm. In the second picture, the dunes still stand out when the substorm started. The third image had a beautiful phase of red rays. The fourth photo was taken before half past one, the third substorm started. The last picture is at 23:40 at the end of the red irradiance phase, when the highest rays reached the North Star.

At least 5 lightning strikes seen

17.10.2022 at 00.12 - 02.05 - Virolahti (III)
Terhi Törmälä

I went to receive the storm in Virolahti - I had drawn lots between Emäsalo and Virolahti and actually after this I am satisfied that I chose Virolahti, there when the storm no longer hit with such a strong force as in the west. However, the lightning was quite small, I saw about six flashes in the clouds, I didn't hear a rumble either (the wind and the sea were roaring so loudly). In the first picture, storm clouds flying in the wind. I got a picture of one of the bald eagles (lower picture).

Auroras seen through breaks in the clouds

23.9.2022 at 23.00 - 02.35 - Taipalsaari (III)
Terhi Törmälä

The opening wind was blowing, so I went to see if I could see green among the clouds - I could see it. In the substorm that was on land at half past two, you could see a pink bottom edge, with my own eyes, a bit marginal in the pictures because of the challenging conditions (clouds and really dark).

Auroras seen through breaks in the clouds

18.9.2022 at 22.15 - 01.15 - Taipalsaari (III)
Terhi Törmälä

The open wind was blowing and I had to go to see if I could see anything when it was quite clear in Lappeenranta. I first drove to the nearby beach, took a couple of pictures and realized that there is a lot of light pollution, in addition to the moon, industry and city lights in the south, not to mention the street lights, etc. I changed places while Bz was running at a plus and drove to Taipalsaari to one of the boat beaches. In the meantime, it had gotten a little more cloudy, so that's why the aurora came from a gap in the clouds. The first picture is from Lappeenranta and the second f...

3.9.2022 at 02.15 - 03.15 - Virolahti (III)
Terhi Törmälä

EDIT: Added the last image reprocessed in case it answered the SAR question. In the evening, I went for a drive from Lappeenranta towards Virolahti, I had to check out a place by the sea, in case there were some sea giants there. While driving home, in the lands of the two, the northern horizon caught my eye and there seemed to be light there. I quickly looked for a bus stop and suddenly took out my camera and took pictures. Repos. A beautiful substorm started when I hastily adjusted the camera to the tripod. It was only at that point that I had to take a look at the repos meter, it looked goo...

At least 10 lightning strikes seen

28.8.2022 at 21.40 - 00.00 - Lappeenranta (V)
Terhi Törmälä

I followed the thunderstorm front that started off the coast of Estonia as it approached the southeastern border of Finland. I drove to my stop at Joutseno in Lappeenranta and waited for the front to reach me. It flew so close to the border that I only got a moment of water on my neck, but what lightning! I calculated at home that the two cameras had caught a total of almost a hundred flashes or parts of flashes, huh huh. There was so much lightning. I'll put a few here.

Quiet aurora band

27.8.2022 at 22.45 - 02.10 - Taipalsaari (II)
Terhi Törmälä

On Saturday evening, the repos meters were in such a way that you had to start driving as soon as it got dark. After reaching the beach, a double arc was visible in the sky, which started to come alive little by little (first photo). And what a beautiful substorm it was. I saw the green color with my own eyes, and for a while the red color got stronger so that I could see it (picture 4). From the pictures, I again noticed the blue aurora borealis very strong. After the recovery phase of the substorm, a green "plump" began to form over the arc and the rays of violet rays, glowed a slightly turq...

At least 10 lightning strikes seen

24.8.2022 at 22.20 - 03.00 - Lappeenranta (IV)
Terhi Törmälä

Yesterday's thunderstorm forecasts were quite favorable here in the southeast corner and already in the afternoon there was a thunderstorm for the first time, but it escaped me, I was in the wrong place. But in the evening there was a chance for revenge and I got it. The south-eastern border of the country was surrounded by several cells, which I was able to photograph. The last one came from the sea at two o'clock in the morning, but it was so far south that you could only see (nice ones at that) kelp. These photos were taken from a field in Joutseno, Lappeenranta.

Quiet aurora arc

21.8.2022 at 00.25 - 02.45 - Lappeenranta (II)
Terhi Törmälä

The values were reasonable and when a friend got a message at midnight that the arch was visible, I decided to go to the beach here in Lappeenranta to have a look. However, now I stayed on this "near shore", so the amount of light pollution (the paper factory was looming behind me like it was the last day) in the pictures was quite a lot. I was able to manually adjust the white balance so that everything didn't glow orange. A small, but really nice substorm started at 1:25 and it turned into a pulsating and diffuse show in two countries. I followed the northern lights until a little past t...

Quiet aurora arc

19.8.2022 at 23.20 - 01.10 - Taipalsaari (II)
Terhi Törmälä

I went to Sarviniemi for a ride because the repo rates were quite reasonable. Warm night again (+22C) but windy, 6 m/s from the south-southeast. I had to wait for about an hour, then the substorm started from the northeast. Calm and beautifully radiant. Quickly turned into a diffuse and pulsating aurora. The upper parts of the northern lights were clearly blue. I followed the pulsating gear of the repos until a little after one o'clock, but then I started to get tired, so that I had to go home, even though I was afraid that there would be another substorm later. And so it was, sometimes in...

Aurora rays

17.8.2022 at 23.30 - 00.30 - Lohja (III)
Terhi Törmälä

I went to Virkkala in Lohja to do some sightseeing and I had to go and photograph those reposes there as well. From the beach of the glass factory, a good view to the north (from the tip of the promontory, where the jumping tower is), but the lights of the dirty paper factory are disturbing (in the northwest). The aurora borealis were quite diffuse, but at best they rose to the zenith. The night was quite tropical and I was amused by the fact that I was wearing a t-shirt.

Nice opening of the season. The air was very humid, so the northern lights were a bit blurry, but it didn't cover their beauty.

Clearly visible night shining clouds

10.8.2022 at 01.00 - 01.50 - Lappeenranta (III)
Terhi Törmälä

I got a night cloud alarm from a friend, so I had to go to the shore of Saimaa to see what it looked like in the sky. The wide angle (15mm) was enough for the entire show. The ends are photographed in 30mm. Redness was visible at the top of the cloud area, especially in the northeast end.

At least 10 lightning strikes seen

12.7.2022 at 20.00 - 21.30 - Lappeenranta (IV)
Terhi Törmälä

During the day, I followed both rain radars, forecasts and thunder radars and decided that I didn't have to go very far this time. A little before eight in the evening, I drove to the Luukkaansalmi bridge (Lappeenrantalaise knows=) and started photographing the storm rising from the southeast and the awesome-looking cumulus cloud at its front. Unfortunately, I had left the wide angle at home, so the 50mm had to do. Before the storm came over, a bit of a rainbow could be seen in its wall of rain under the avalanche. I was able to record a few flashes on the camera (I don't own a trigger...

Lightning photo

12.7.2022 at 00.40 - 01.25 - Imatra (III)
Terhi Törmälä

I chose Imatra Lake Immalanjärvi as my observation spot, but let's just say that maybe I should have driven even further. Well, first time then. I got a bit of a chill from yesterday's thunder, but it was enough for two really nice pictures of cloud lightning. It was raining steadily and the lightning was so far away that I only saw 4 cloud flashes (discharge channels), two of which I took pictures of. Other flashes were mostly flashes in the clouds.

At least 10 lightning strikes seen

3.7.2022 at 16.00 - 17.00 - Lappeenranta (III)
Terhi Törmälä

I followed the thunderstorm situation all day and finally four of them started happening in Lappeenranta as well. I had chosen the Luukkaansalmi bridge as the anchorage point and it turned out (once again) to be the right place. The catch was one flash photo and a couple of nice avalanches. And finally the rainbow.
