I saw a nice version of this iconic object in the starry sky online that used a rarer image palette. I decided to try my own version with a remote telescope. Well, this turned out to be a bit of a stub version with a total exposure time of 'only' 10 hours, but I'm quite satisfied with this and especially since I was able to remove the disturbing stars.

The purpose of the second CovalENS 1.6° x 1.9° panoramic space object on New Year's Day was to test what can be done in half an hour, but this stretched to 36 minutes. Yes, even with such a short exposure, the subject can be distinguished. I have to test a longer exposure during the winter. First image DeNoise processing. Second picture, original, unprocessed. Third without stars.

I tested Vespera's "panorama" mode, it allows you to explore a much wider sky than Vespera's original field of view. The Vespera benefits from the ability to capture images at a higher resolution than the sensor resolution, up to 8.2 megapixels thanks to the mosaic mode. Normally, an image is 1920 x 1080 pixels, but for example this image of Horse's Head and Flame Fog is 1920 x 4091 pixels I cropped the first picture a bit, changed the tones a bit in the second one, the third picture is the original, from which you can see that the mosaic was not quite finished yet, the tree came t...

Yes, this is a great and diverse area with all its different mists. I took advantage of a couple of hours of data filmed last spring and filmed the remaining three in December. More would have been worth it, but conditions have supported the hobby very badly lately.

With clear weather, I photographed this subject in short snippets from November to February. The picture is a mosaic composed of two parts. You can often see broadband images taken in natural colors from this subject, but I wanted to see what the subject would look like with narrowband filters. The colors in the image follow the Hubble palette, i.e. the red channel in the image contains S-II or sulfur, the green channel H-alpha or hydrogen and the blue channel O-III or oxygen. The second image also shows a starless version of the view.

The filming of Orion continued. It was really clear now, no overcast clouds and no frost. Was able to take longer exposures than the last one, which can be seen in the final result. I also managed to process the image so that the bright M42 and the dim Horsehead Nebula appear beautifully in the same image. There is a large area of opaque mist around Orion's fog, which appears brown in the picture.

Biscuit combines the same figure 6.2. and 9.2. the shots I photographed of Horsehead Mist. This gave the image more than two hours of shutter speed and significantly reduced noise. So there are 270 exposures in the picture for half a minute. Thanks to the short exposures, the stars remained dotted.

From the balcony I photographed again the Orion mists, this time the Horse Head Mist and the Flame Mist, which are located next to the Alnitak star in the Orion Belt. Next to the red emission mist (IC 434) is a dark mist from which a horse’s head-shaped protrusion protrudes in front of the red mist (Barnard 33).

We were watching a small group of stars when the weather finally allowed it. Personally, I also thought of taking advantage of the joy and decided to shoot horse head fog in a narrow lane. I collected light for 3h overall, but much of the pictures ended up in the trash. Next, I’ll look at why the OIII filter is annoying, however, I got used to somehow valid 8min oxygen for this image. Edit 7.2.2021: Added image with OIII 2min x20min collected and photometric color calibration performed

Today I managed to photograph Orion's mists while taking a sauna. The weather was very clear, and when there was no snow on the ground, the sky is very dark and the mists stand out nicely in the pictures, even without filters. This way, the mists also appear in natural colors. The first delimitation shows the pink Orioin large gas fog M42 and M43 and above them the blue-violet reflection fog Sh-279 "running man". The second demarcation shows the red emission mist IC 434 and in front of it the dark mist Barnard 33 or Horse Head Nebula and on the left next to the Alnitak star the orange flam...

From here it starts little by little.. Photo compiled from exposures of two nights from 13-14.2. The yellowness of the picture is due to the street lights, which turn off at midnight when cloud rafts arrive at exactly the same time. Seeing wasn't quite perfect either night, but I think you can create a "tolerable" track with this kind of equipment. Waiting for the weather.

Last night, for a long time, I got to aim at the sky with a telescope as the clouds tempered to stay away. As a target, I chose an area of Horsehead Nebula that I hadn’t previously tried to describe with my telescope. The "fog" above the horizon and light pollution hampered the shooting of the low-lying subject a bit, and the exposure time should have been longer. However, the character of the horsehead stands out, which was my original goal. While assembling the equipment, I noticed several starbursts, the finest being a bright and green fireball. Edit: image updated to better quality.

Orion is only visible for a couple of hours at my backyard location, and even then the light pollution in the city is just right on the road. As a result, I have done little to describe the handsome objects in that area. I had just maintained the tripod and wanted to try it out without a guide. I exposed the Horsehead Fog for an hour and although there was a lot of missing from the subject due to light pollution, the main thing was described handsomely.

I left again to photograph the stars of Kallahti, because it was promised a completely clear night and I wanted to illuminate Orion's mists for much longer than last time. However, the wind was now quite strong. At first, I was able to get the tracking stand right on the beach, but I soon found that the wind was shaking the stand too much, making it impossible to get very dry. I decided to move the stand next to the climbing frame on the shore, in the shade of which the wind was clearly more moderate. Here the filming was successful. This time, I used only minute exposures to keep the star...

As another subject, I described the environment of the Orion Belt, where there are several different mists. The stars of the Orion belt are from left to right Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka. In front of the red emission fog IC 434 below the Alnitak star is a silhouette of a horseshoe-shaped dark fog Barnard 33 on the left side of the Alnitak. During this shooting, a thin cloud of dusk began to drift in the sky, causing a veil to appear around the brightest stars. The lens also had a bit of fog in 10-degree frost. I also re-processed this picture with the new Gimp and switched here to replace the...

I decided to stay at Metsähovi Radio Research Station for the night to test what kind of skies are really there. There is a surprising amount of light pollution in the east, but the southern sky is really good from the point of view of the metropolitan area. For this reason, I decided to go and photograph the horse's head with the help of a light pollution filter alone. The abundant cut-out forest to the south was allowed to keep the site visible many times longer than it would be visible from the backyard. I went back to the ice on the lake to shoot as the fog dissipated. In the direction of Orion, there are a lot of fine gas mists in a small area. The first delineation is Orion's large gas mist and "Running Man", the second is Horse's Head Nebula and Flame Nebula. The image is a combination of exposures of different lengths so that the center area of the M42 does not burn so badly.

After a long "dry" period, I was forced to get to shoot, even though the Moon made the conditions moderately challenging. So I stayed at the traditional sites to recall all the things I learned through trial and error. Well, always include a few blobs to fit. When shooting the M42, I tried a Hoyan Red Intensifier filter for Tamron 70-300 mm I bought from the Yankees. Focus was a bit wrong. In the moonlit sky, the difference to images without a filter in the past was by no means shocking. The experiment will continue as long as you can fire into the dark sky. Canon 7D MKii camera.

I photographed these objects already at the turn of the year. The raw material was of such poor quality (mainly due to clouds and poor transparency) that I was not inspired to start the image processing project earlier. The quality is at least partly compensated by the number of pictures, i.e. the picture contains about 7h, 10 min partial exposures. The image has been cropped briskly from the edges, as well as smoothed and patted in the absence of proper flat images. However, the end result turned out better than I had thought.

In addition to photographing the northern lights , I had decided to do a test run of my H-alpha filter. Indeed, the conditions were so bad that narrowband imaging was the most sensible form of imaging. On the other hand, even it didn’t save me from the gradients I had to remove in image processing. For a very long time I didn’t shine this time, but the fogs of Orion still came out moderately. During the shooting of the series, the northern lights were visible in some places even quite bright in the northern sky, but the only camera that was included was busy.

I photographed Orion's star pattern around the belt for about 40 minutes with exposures of different lengths. And look, that's where some details and colors started to stand out. Annoying when I couldn’t afford to continue the session with another mokoma, for example. Well, during the next ‘dark moon’, that is, next year, we have to get back to it. While the star pattern was pretty low and the Christmas lights in the same direction, I found a pretty nice end result in my opinion.

Some of Barnard's loops fit nicely in the same field as Liekkisumu and Hevosenpääsum. Unfortunately, the sky in Tähtikallio was not completely dark either, but the light pollution gradient hampered the image processing a bit. Here is a wider view in the direction of Orion. This should be tried again in a snow-free time, because even though the weather seemed clear, and the light pollution in that direction isn't too bad either, the bright snow reflects even a little scattered light into the sky and erases the lower mists from the picture.
