Rare halos

20.11.2022 at 12.40 - 13.20 - Pelkosenniemi (IV)
Anne Niemistö

I don't know the exact time for the beginning and the end. My estimate is between 12:40 and 1:20 p.m. Snow on Pyhätunturi causes ice fog, etc.

M42

6.11.2022 at 00.42 - 01.00 - Espoo (III)
Janne Niemi, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

As a beginner star photography hobbyist, I'm quite happy with my shot of Orion's great gas nebula. The picture was taken near Ring I (isn't the amount of light pollution about Bortle 8?) on a moonlit night. As a camera, the ancient self-astronmodded Canon 450D makes a surprisingly good impression.

Bright night shining clouds

26.7.2017 at 00.30 - Helsinki, Malmi (IV)
Anne Niemi, Ursa (Helsinki)

I was already asleep, but I woke up half past one and looked out the window. At first it seemed as if bright illuminating night clouds had appeared between the lower clouds, but on closer inspection the pattern of the night clouds was so special that it just seemed to have a lower cloud, even though it was not. I watched the play only from my own yard, which had opacity, looking in the direction northwest-north-northeast. At one time, lower clouds came to cover the sky. The dates of the pictures are: 00:30, 00:36, 00:38, 00:39 01:02, 01:02, 01:03

Light pillars

24.1.2017 at 23.10 - 23.20 - Helsinki (II)
Anne Niemi, Ursa (Helsinki)

A few artificial light pillars in Malmi, Helsinki. They were not very bright, but were clearly visible from the lights farther away. There were no pillars visible from the low beam, but the rain of ice crystals felt nice on my face.

Clearly visible night shining clouds

13.7.2016 at 01.50 - 01.55 - Kemiönsaari, Helsingholmen (III)
Anne Niemi, Ursa (Helsinki)

I woke up at night and noticed the night clouds, which were pretty good.

Clear 22 degree ring to hear.

Noctilucent clouds visible between clouds

8.8.2015 at 22.55 - 00.00 - Kirkkonummi, Porkkala (I)
Anne Niemi, Ursa (Helsinki)

During the sauna trip on the island, night clouds were visible from the beginning of twilight at 22.55 (second photo) until midnight. The first picture is at 11.30pm, when the phenomenon was at its best. The third and fourth images are at 11.45 and 24.00, when there were some medium clouds on the road. The clouds were in a fairly small area and fairly low on the horizon, but fortunately the view to the north was open. (Apologies for the poor picture quality, the sauna trip only had a mobile phone ...) The starry sky was later magnificently seen with its Milky Way and slow-moving satellites.

Rare halos

25.7.2015 at 15.55 - 17.15 - Porvoo, Onaksen saaristo (IV)
Anne Niemi, Ursa (Helsinki)

Bright pyramid halves! EDIT: The first picture was taken with the Lumia 920. Added images with Canon EOS 450D and extended observation time. I quickly made the first observation to alert others as well. Then I watched the play for about an hour until the cloud curtain thickened. 24 lower parhels were quite clear, 9 lower parhels is a somewhat uncertain observation, but I ticked it nonetheless. I imagine seeing a 35 degree ring in the fourth picture, but I'm already pretty sure about that ... The 46-degree ring was clearly visible but dim at 4:45 p.m. After 5pm there seemed to be only a 22 ...

Dim night shining clouds

25.7.2015 at 00.15 - 01.00 - Porvoo, Onaksen saaristo (II)
Anne Niemi, Ursa (Helsinki)

In the aftermath of the previous night, the night situation had to be checked again. This time it was much quieter, but at about one there were pretty nice belts and a bit of waves on the pretty low horizon (the first two pictures). The last picture is at 0:15 at a time when the play was still very dim and muted.

Bright night shining clouds

24.7.2015 at 00.00 - 00.45 - Helsinki (IV)
Anne Niemi, Ursa (Helsinki)

Even before midnight, the night cloud play looked so wide that I had to leave the yard to the edge of the field to shoot after midnight. The play had brightened, but at the same time the clouds had retreated north so that the extent narrowed from 1/4 to 1/8 of the sky. At first, the middle clouds seemed to be coming their way, but they receded pretty soon. The first picture is at 00:30. The next three images form the Panorama, taken at 12:20 a.m., when there were slightly mid-clouds in front. The last two pictures I took at 12:40. The play continued as I stopped observing, but the clouds seeme...

Clearly visible night shining clouds

23.7.2015 at 23.30 - 23.40 - Helsinki (III)
Anne Niemi, Ursa (Helsinki)

Now, even before midnight, more than half of the sky is covered with fairly bright night clouds. A variety of structures. (Add pictures later) EDIT: Pictures taken from a somewhat covered yard added from this early stage, when the brightness of the play was not yet so great, but the scale was greater than later at night. The first image shows the entity facing north, the second image shows a special shape in the northwest, and the third image shows Vega above the edge of the roof (the extent was over the zenith). I report the midnight part separately.

Clearly visible night shining clouds

23.7.2015 at 03.00 - Helsinki (III)
Anne Niemi, Ursa (Helsinki)

I woke up at three o'clock at night and glanced to see the illuminating night clouds. The waves were already nicely visible from the window, so I went to the yard to take a few pictures. There is cover in the yard, so the play wasn’t quite visible in its entirety, but I would estimate 1/4 of the sky at least. (Apparently this observation pales alongside other great observations, but will be added here nonetheless ...)

Pääsateenkaari

20.7.2015 at 19.15 - 19.30 - Helsinki (IV)
Anne Niemi, Ursa (Helsinki)

In the evening walk, I aptly hit the edge of the field to photograph a fine rainbow. There was even a bit of interference in the main arch. A funny optical illusion would seem to be that against the blue sky, the red of the main arc looks purple when there is a dark cloud next to it.

Clearly visible night shining clouds

18.7.2015 at 01.45 - 01.55 - Helsinki (III)
Anne Niemi, Ursa (Helsinki)

Relatively bright illuminating night clouds over a fairly wide area to the north. There was some opacity on the observation horizon, but the clouds rose quite high — close to zenith, at least in Cassiopeia.

Maan varjo

2.7.2015 at 22.55 - 23.05 - Hanko (II)
Anne Niemi, Ursa (Helsinki)

Around the full moon, I photographed the moon and the shadow of the earth. Later, modest twilight rays were also found in the images. Brown was not very strange either, but the atmosphere in the harbor was still beautiful.

Rare halos

20.5.2015 at 18.00 - 18.05 - Helsinki (IV)
Anne Niemi, Ursa (Helsinki)

For a moment, it looked as if the Skywarden had a piece of horizon ring and a 120-degree side sun. The location seemed visually convenient. No other halos were visible, making this observation quite uncertain. I put a picture if any of it can confirm the observation. Otherwise, the observation can be deleted.

Noctilucent clouds visible between clouds

19.7.2014 at 00.45 - 00.55 - Kirkkonummi, Porkkala (I)
Anne Niemi, Ursa (Helsinki)

A small area of night clouds between ordinary upper / middle clouds. I didn’t stay to watch the play for a long time, I grabbed one picture.

Several halo forms

18.7.2014 at 21.15 - 21.30 - Kirkkonummi, Porkkala (II)
Anne Niemi, Ursa (Helsinki)

Side suns with the setting sun, after the setting of the sun pillar.

Clearly visible night shining clouds

18.7.2014 at 02.00 - 03.00 - Porkkala (III)
Anne Niemi, Ursa (Helsinki)

Initially, from 2.00 to 2.15, fairly bright belts and waves were visible from the slits of the fog cloud in 1/8 of the sky. At 2.40-3.00 the fog had dissipated and 3/8 clearly visible night clouds covering the sky were visible. The pictures have also been taken with a digital harness - unfortunately there was not a very wide angle but I had to settle for an 18 mm lens.
