Active aurora band

16.3.2023 at 01.17 - Jyväskylä (III)
Vesa Vasankari, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

Northern lights in the northern sky as seen from Jyväskylä. During the event, I myself was in the country of Unte, but my video camera, which is mainly on duty for fireballs, naturally also recorded repos. This episode seemed to have been so intense, at least through the camera's low-light function, that I decided to capture a clip of it - and see it here as well. I have "tinted" the video from the original black and white. In addition, I have manually sped up the clip by a good minute to the visible length, filming from the mobile phone screen. The acceleration is therefore done by draggi...

According to my own observation of this brilliant reposeater. I followed the possible southern shapes carefully, in the last picture on the side of the red arch there is one spot with weak green repos.

Heikki Jokiranta

When photographing the northern lights, I noticed very fast , successive waves moving across the sky - difficult to describe - like faint "hail waves" that traveled "from north to south". Impossible to film with a system camera (fx). It wasn't about the dunes, for example. Colorless to the eye. This is the second time I have observed this phenomenon.

Amazing light show :) There are so many amazing pictures here, so I'll share only these two here :) I think they're one of the best from about 250 frames from that night.

Petri Martikainen, Ursa (Itä-Suomi)

Last night's northern lights in stereo. The idea is to look at a different image with each eye until the images slide on top of each other to form a three-dimensional image. A few stars are highlighted in each image to make it easier to "match" the images. All winter, there have been plans to carry out this experiment, and it worked out surprisingly well for the first time. The northern lights also offered their best. The photo pairs were taken in the west direction with a focal length of 18 mm, the cameras were 5 km apart. The pictures of the pair of pictures were taken with 8-second expo...

Half-sky auroras

Terhi Törmälä

It was evening. The direction of Lappeenranta had been predicted to be completely clear and the Northern Lights forecasts were quite promising. However, when I got to the venues, the situation was a little different. Clouds. A lot. And they multiplied menacingly. At 12:30 the sky was completely overcast, except for a small cloud over my head. Through the cracks in the clouds, I saw that the aurora borealis brightened and a substorm started. Then it started to snow, snowflakes. I considered for a moment that I would throw a waterfowl with the camera and go home. Well, of course I wouldn't d...

Sirpa Malinen

I was already going to sleep when I glanced at the views of the aurora cameras, and I had to put on my clothes and sneak behind the house. First without a camera, but I had to get it too, and being a little poorly prepared, the settings are partly in that direction. More than half the sky aurora borealis, which were relatively vivid. A few brighter moments and a dimmer corona. I died down towards 01:30, when I decided to go to sleep.

Georg Kieninger

The predictions were correct, there were great aurora borealis that stood out visually. The brightness might not have been top class, at least here in the very center of the city, but the fires spread over a wide area from north to west. Perhaps it would have been worth staying a little longer to monitor the situation, but you always know that in hindsight. Good like that.

Half-sky auroras

15.3.2023 at 22.00 - 02.00 - Laitila (IV)
Pirjo Koski, Porin Karhunvartijat

Jössespentele in the peach tree, which is good for lovers of heavenly fires. The evening's play was a bit of a wait, but it was again worth all the vigilance and freezing. The special feature of the evening was the SAR arc that appeared in varying degrees on the west side from around 0:40 onwards. Towards the end of the show, a cluster of aurora borealis appeared to the west that looked a bit special and I dismissed it as unrecognizable, because I haven't seen anything like that before, are they all ordinary rays and belts zig-zag, but an awful lot of stuff in the southern / western sk...

Half-sky auroras

15.3.2023 at 23.30 - 01.45 - Pöytyä (IV)
Matti Helin, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

A great show, even a bit surprising. I looked at the satellite data and concluded that I have to be filming by half past twelve at the latest. So, head to the car and off you go. I stepped outside and said: Clouds. The whole sky is full. After a quick study of the maps, it seemed that the weather would be better northeast of Turku. So, towards the table. I walked from the car to the beach. Huh, it's getting hot in here. I took off my gloves and hat and started to cross the lake. Sweat. At one point I had covered almost a kilometer in wet, hard and soft snow at the same time and it was time...

Petri Tikkanen, Jyväskylän Sirius

Every time I wake up at night, I glance at the Jyväskylä Sirius All-Sky cameras from my phone. Last night, I had to get out of bed and take my camera to the nearby park to shoot. As the sunspot maximum approaches, these amazing aurora borealis are becoming more and more frequent! Canon 650D Sigma 10mm f/2.8 1s f/2.8 ISO 3200

Senni Rytkönen, Turun Ursa

Oh, those days when there were no applications for aurora alerts and you just had to rely on the internal radar. Since the spring equinox is around the corner, I could already sense that repos could appear. When I went to sleep, I looked out of the window at the northern sky to see if the sky was clear (and if the neighbor of the new semi-detached house next door had left his spotlight on) and it was clear; recognizable movement was already visible in the sky. Fortunately, my home has an L-shaped balcony with a good view to the north, but after the new neighbor's house went up next to it, ...

I didn't know that repos were coming. However, I took OsmoAction to the roof to be on duty when a cloudless night was coming. The hopes were those atmospheric experiments in Lapland. If only Barium could get here. Well, the shockingly bright almost all-night repossess was caught. :) It's just a shame that we haven't gotten a fish eye accessory for Osmo's beak. Now it's going to order. The handsome coronas were left above the image field this time too :( The reposting seems to have continued until dawn. The timelapse became so long (1min 20s) that there is no way I can compr...

All-sky aurora

15.3.2023 at 23.40 - 01.40 - Kurikka, Jurva (IV)
Timo Nevala, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

The northern lights were able to surprise. I went to the yard to see if the artificial light pillars from earlier in the evening could still be seen, but there the Northern Lights show was about to start! And it was great. I followed the display until it started to fade away and the winds would dip back towards the north. The pictures try to tell what kind of views were available. There was a lot of red, especially in the photos, but you could distinguish it with your eyes. The corona wasn't terribly impressive. The shape in picture 2 looks like a picket fence, but I'm not sure if that...

Bright northern lights. More than half the sky to Leijona. Corona in Otava. The color for the eyes is light green, red only in the picture. Rapidly flashing spots and belts. Photo on the phone a little after the brightest moment in the direction north and northeast.

Petri Kuossari, Riihimäen tähtit. yhdistys

In the middle of my observation of the exoplanet, the aurora borealis started to appear in the sky. I got a phone stand and pictures to take on the ice of Alasjärvi. For a long time it was quite calm and smooth going, until it started to happen. The corona started to pulsate overhead around 1:00 and after that different shapes could be seen everywhere. The northern lights are visible in the south again.

The forecasts showed a flurry of activity, and I peeked out. The aurora borealis was flashing in many directions, and I hurried to get the camera from inside. The outdoor lights and yard trees hindered the view somewhat when I was shooting handheld. Flashes of lively movement and patterns squirmed overhead as lights, but the pictures reveal wonderful color combinations. Along the tops of the trees, the colors were yellow-green. The beautiful northern lights that I got to experience, even at the risk of catching a cold. The shooting time (around 00.35 - 01.05) differs from the time indicated by...

One of my dreams finally came true. A little bad picture, but fine for me Get to photograph the Aurora Borealis in the constellation Otava. :) Edit: Added one picture with a dark spot in the corona. This picture makes me cringe about the phenomenon.

15.3.2023 at 23.55 - 00.30 - Rusko (III)
Mikko Peussa, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

The northern lights appeared at a rather expected time. At the beginning and at the end, the clouds were a bit of a hindrance, but sometimes there were visible curls in the clearer sky. On a weekday night, there was no way I could watch longer and the cloudiness started to increase.

I guess I was a little late for the brightest moment. Faded for a while after the start, but got stronger again. Sometimes they changed their shape very quickly and the movement was clearly visible with the naked eye, but the colors were faint. Towards the end, they rose above half the sky, finally being covered behind a cloud cover.

An experiment to get a corona discharge on video recording with the south-west camera of Karhukamera (Karhu VI). The camera could not be turned closer to the zenith, but at least something was captured from this. --- EDIT: addition to observation (March 17, 2023): The Northern Camera recording before and after the rapid appearance of the corona eruption (around 01:00) is worth watching via YouTube. Too big a video to share here, but the video shows a lot of these repos as well! Especially the pulsation of the northern lights is better visible, because the individual images have a very short ex...

When the forecasts were favorable, the Nurmijärvi curve was monitored. Half an hour before midnight, the greenness of the smoke from the district heating stood out weakly in the pictures. The facility shouldn't have Homer Simpson messing around with nuclear fuel, so they had to have repos. The gauze belt rose higher on the hoist and suddenly activated and the arc stood out very visually. Vauhti had to change to a worse camera with a wider zoom (the stripes you see in the pictures are a bad feature of the camera). The brighter moment lasted only a few minutes. The extended presentation cont...

I had to spend the whole evening looking to see if I could see it. Well no. A cloud of fog was constantly pushing in from the north, from which snow was being thrown. Sometimes a small bright moment and again from the beginning. Finally, a clearer tovi and the aurora borealis came to that point. There was a rush to get out. I thought that not a single picture would be successful when I immediately got snowflakes on my face :D The green lights were sometimes very bright. It was difficult to get a picture because part of it came right on top and the whole view was quite wide. You won't get g...

Auroras seen through breaks in the clouds

15.3.2023 at 23.31 - Kurikka (III)
Marko Myllyniemi, Lakeuden Ursa

When I got home from work, I was pretty sure that there would be dim northern lights in the northern sky, so I decided to take the camera outside for a while. When looking for the camera from the inside, the cloudiness had already increased, but so much was captured that the pictures really had a greenish tint. Such a basic peaceful aurora borealis with a few intermittent rays. The light pollution was quite "commendable", even though the observation site itself is quite dark...
