All-sky aurora

18.3.2015 at 00.30 - 01.30 - Kurikka, Jurva (V)
Timo Nevala

Awesome northern lights spectacle, whose photographs shine even brighter than at night when viewed with the naked eye.

Active aurora band

6.2.2020 at 22.35 - Kurikka, Jurva (III)
Timo Nevala, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

At first a calm arch was visible. It then disintegrated into bright strands, which took a few minutes. After that, nothing was visible. There was ice mist in the air from the snow cannons of the nearby biathlon stadium, and the village lamps made faint pillars of light on it, but their brightness was completely overshadowed by the northern lights. In the more rigorous image, one pillar somehow stands out.

Clouds have ruined many northern lights in western Finland this winter, but now they can be seen here as well.

Half-sky auroras

3.10.2022 at 01.00 - 02.00 - Kurikka, Jurva (III)
Timo Nevala, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

I guess I didn't see the beginning. The sky was already full of pulsating waves when I noticed the northern lights. At a low point in the northern direction, the arc brightened and belts and rays rose from it high into the sky. They didn't last very long until they faded away. All that remained was the arch and the gauze low in the north, which were also soon covered behind the clouds. I couldn't see the colors with the naked eye, but in the photos you can distinguish at least green and purple.

Quiet aurora band

22.10.2022 at 23.00 - 23.30 - Kurikka, Jurva (II)
Timo Nevala, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

I think the strongest aurora borealis had already been earlier in the evening, staying behind the clouds at that time. The thinnest clouds in the north could then be seen turning green. These pictures were taken when the clouds were receding, but the aurora borealis was already fading by then. Another picture was caught by a strange red arc, which was so dim that it could not be distinguished with the naked eye.

Quiet aurora arc

23.10.2022 at 22.30 - 23.15 - Kurikka, Jurva (II)
Timo Nevala, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

For the most part, the repeat of the previous evening, i.e. the kind of northern lights I saw with my naked eyes. So nothing special. I was waiting if they would become more spectacular, but no... There were no clouds to spoil the view this time. For some reason, tonight's aurora borealis appeared brighter and greener in the camera pictures than yesterday, although it was just the opposite when seen with the naked eye.

Diffuse glow

23.2.2023 at 22.30 - 00.30 - Kurikka, Jurva (I)
Timo Nevala, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

Some kind of aurora activity was visible in the northern sky throughout the evening. Sometimes you could see a faint curve, sometimes gauze, somewhere in between you couldn't see anything at all. I always went to the yard from time to time to check the situation, but it wasn't cold there all the time, especially since the aurora never seemed to develop anything better. The picture was taken at 23:50 when the gauze was at its brightest (unless it was momentarily brighter just when I wasn't in the yard watching). NOTE: Only the green in the picture in the sky is from the northern lig...

Diffuse glow

25.2.2023 at 20.45 - 22.30 - Kurikka, Jurva (I)
Timo Nevala, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

At some point during the evening, an aurora borealis had appeared in the sky. It was in a bigger field today than the day before . At its best, roughly a quarter of the sky glowed green and the gauze stretched all the way to Otava. Quite a reasonable performance here in the latitudes of Western Finland. Structures that look like arches and rays were also noticeable among the gauze, which, however, mostly stood out in the photographs. The sky clouded over at about half past eleven, and the sighting of the northern lights ended there.

All-sky aurora

27.2.2023 at 01.30 - 03.00 - Kurikka, Jurva (IV)
Timo Nevala, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

The sky became cloudy even before the northern lights show could even begin. I always went to the yard to check the situation, but it wasn't until half past two that the cloud cover seemed to be thinning and tearing a bit. That's when you saw how the aurora borealis was everywhere in the sky. Quite bright, apparently, because it was visible even through the thinning clouds. An interesting detail was a bright ray that suddenly "shot" from the north towards the zenith, but dimmed so quickly that I couldn't get a good picture of it. Soon after, the sky clouded over again. After a brea...

All-sky aurora

27.2.2023 at 19.30 - 23.30 - Kurikka, Jurva (III)
Timo Nevala, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

Last night's northern lights show still continued. The fires began to appear as the sky darkened. The best, most colorful pieces were served right away, after which the sky clouded over. Later, the cloud cover opened for a while, revealing greenish belts, until before midnight it was no longer possible to distinguish the aurora borealis through the cloudiness. Overall, this was more modest than last night's show.

All-sky aurora

15.3.2023 at 23.40 - 01.40 - Kurikka, Jurva (IV)
Timo Nevala, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

The northern lights were able to surprise. I went to the yard to see if the artificial light pillars from earlier in the evening could still be seen, but there the Northern Lights show was about to start! And it was great. I followed the display until it started to fade away and the winds would dip back towards the north. The pictures try to tell what kind of views were available. There was a lot of red, especially in the photos, but you could distinguish it with your eyes. The corona wasn't terribly impressive. The shape in picture 2 looks like a picket fence, but I'm not sure if that...

Quiet aurora arc

21.3.2023 at 01.45 - 02.05 - Kurikka, Jurva (II)
Timo Nevala, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

I saw the aurora arc low in the north, but it started to fade before I could get the camera. The gauze above the arch was so dim that its color could not be seen with the naked eye, but in the photographs it was purple, and not green as often. The orange shapes in the picture near the horizon are clouds colored by light pollution. Compared to last week's northern lights show, tonight's northern lights were nothing...

Quiet aurora arc

21.3.2023 at 23.30 - 03.30 - Kurikka, Jurva (II)
Timo Nevala, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

Update from the night before , the picture is almost the same. Although the northern lights were visible for longer now, and on the other hand, there were more clouds ahead, and I can't say for sure if the arc that was low was at some point from calm to perhaps more restless. In addition to the northern lights, I followed the space weather of the Finnish Meteorological Institute. At the measuring stations in the south, the magnetic activity did not fluctuate much above zero, and the "humps" were not red even in Lapland. Nevertheless, the sky was green with the northern lights. And it wasn&...

Rare halos

25.3.2013 at 11.38 - Kurikka, Jurva (IV)
Timo Nevala

I was browsing those pictures of the Ostrobothnian comedy halo play sent here. But such an arc was not at least as clearly visible in them as in my own picture. The arc left the horizon ring obliquely upwards and was visible for perhaps only about 10 minutes. I’m not such a hard halo expert that I could say what an arc it was. The picture also shows a 120 ° side sun. Complement to the observation: more pictures at the request of the public. In the second picture, the above arc may be more clearly visible. I’m not going to swear now that “the pale beach above the spruces rising from left to rig...

Pyramid halls in Southern Ostrobothnia. The tires were barely visible to the naked eye. In the treated image, there may be a faint appearance of a tire even 23 ° outside the tire.

Several bright halo forms

3.5.2021 at 10.00 - 15.00 - Kurikka, Jurva (III)
Timo Nevala, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

Here in Western Finland apparently no halo rarities were now visible. The arch above it was remarkably bright at times. The picture was taken sometime after two in the afternoon, the arch flanking the pool was then covered with clouds.

Several halo forms

7.12.2022 at 20.00 - 00.00 - Kurikka, Jurva (II)
Timo Nevala, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

The 22° ring appeared around the Moon for hours, sometimes dim, sometimes really dim. The upper part of the ring was so much brighter than the rest of the ring that I interpreted it as an overhead arc. In the second picture, right next to the Moon, Mars also stands out.

Bright halo phenomena covering the sky

7.1.2023 at 00.00 - 01.30 - Kurikka, Jurva (V)
Timo Nevala, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

A great nocturnal halo show. One can only guess how wonderful it would have been if the full moon had been replaced by a bright Sun. I noticed in the middle of the night that now a reasonably bright 22° ring can be seen around the Moon. I picked up a camera with a tripod and started to follow the development of the phenomenon. At first, nothing happened, and I used up the camera's battery by photographing just the tire. (I left those pictures out of here.) After about half an hour, the upper cloud started to become more favorable for the halo, and the lateral arcs started to emerge. After ...

One halo form

22.2.2023 at 17.05 - Kurikka, Jurva (I)
Timo Nevala, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

I came across a faint pillar of sun when I went to the lake to see if there were any nacreous clouds. Well, there wasn't even a sign of pearls, and low clouds rolled in from the west to cover the view even before the sun even set. That pillar formed for a while in those clouds.
