Half-sky auroras

23.3.2023 at 21.20 - 21.55 - Kangasala, Sahalahti (IV)
Jorma Mäntylä

The K-index jumped to 7 in the afternoon, so I started charging the camera battery. After the beautiful crescent moon and Venus in the early evening, the sky became overcast and the rocket launch was not seen. At 9 pm the sky unexpectedly cleared. I went to the ice of the lake with my camera and tripod. More than half of the sky, the repos flickered handsomely and Korona was visible overhead. After less than an hour, it got so cold on the ice that we had to go to the hut.

Venus and Jupiter

1.3.2023 at 19.00 - 19.05 - Kangasala, Sahalahti (IV)
Jorma Mäntylä

Jupiter and Venus shone very close to each other. The camera's 200 mm telephoto made Jupiter's moons stand out, but the glare of Venus made filming difficult. The moons are Callisto, Ganymede and Io on the left and Europa on Jupiter's right.

All-sky aurora

27.2.2023 at 20.05 - 21.00 - Kangasala, Sahalahti (IV)
Jorma Mäntylä

The northern lights show was even better than yesterday. Now you could see green and red and purple repos, and more rays on top of the store. There was a handsome oval on top of the head. Not even the half moon dimmed the going, but the strong wind forced us to leave the ice of the lake after barely an hour of observation.

Half-sky auroras

27.2.2023 at 01.30 - 01.50 - Kangasala, Sahalahti (IV)
Jorma Mäntylä

The February repo show seemed to be getting brighter around the 27th. I went to the ice of the lake again with the camera. There was a flash and flash and also red repos. Because of the bitter cold, the observation was limited to 20 minutes, but a couple of nice pictures were captured on the camera.

Active aurora band

26.2.2023 at 22.05 - 22.55 - Kangasala, Sahalahti (III)
Jorma Mäntylä

Yle and the Finnish Meteorological Institute threatened the northern lights all day. At first nothing was visible, until at 10 pm the northern sky began to lighten. I went to the ice of the lake, from where there is a good view to the north. The Northern Lights belt was visible and started to brighten at 22:20. At 22:30 the green color started to stand out and a little reddish. Rays and ripples were also visible. I was on the ice in -20 degrees below zero until 10:55 p.m. At their best, the people of Repo covered a third of the sky. The best repo show of the year that started.

Binocular comet ZTF

22.2.2023 at 19.20 - 19.50 - Kangasala, Sahalahti (II)
Jorma Mäntylä

The comet ZTF has dimmed. I don't even hope to see with the naked eye anymore, maybe max magnitude 7. It has clearly passed the maximum brightness. Now found in Orion and an easy catch with the camera. I shot with the same optics and settings as the previous times. However, seeing was mediocre due to the frost and fog. Shaking the camera and tripod in -20 degrees below zero was not a treat. Connection wires and cables were like iron wire. However, there was still a picture of ZTF and with the DSS program even a little bit of the tail came out.

Moon, Venus and Jupiter

22.2.2023 at 18.15 - 19.20 - Kangasala, Sahalahti (IV)
Jorma Mäntylä

The moon, Jupiter and Venus met in the evening sky on 22.2. I shot a nice three-shot at the lake shore as the frost intensified.

Binocular comet ZTF

11.2.2023 at 19.00 - 19.40 - Kangasala, Sahalahti (II)
Jorma Mäntylä

The February sky, brighter than yesterday, darkened on Saturday. I changed the f2 lens to the camera so that the ZTF with its tails could be seen better. Seeing was quite good, but the comet was on 11.2. too close to the planet Mars. It did not stand out with the naked eye in the glare of Mars, which also made image processing difficult. With the DSS program, the tail did appear, but ZTF seems to be slowly fading. On the left side of the image is the star cluster NGC 1746. The observation was cheered up by a barn owl hooting in the nearby forest. A sign of spring when the owls start hooting.

Comet with naked eye coma ZTF

10.2.2023 at 18.45 - 19.30 - Kangasala, Sahalahti (II)
Jorma Mäntylä

The sky cleared and the moonlight did not disturb. Comet ZTF stood out to the naked eye as a faint smudge next to dazzling Mars when not looking. The comet came out nicely on the camera. The tail seems to have become fan-shaped.

Landscape image of a planet

10.2.2023 at 18.20 - 18.30 - Kangasala, Sahalahti (IV)
Jorma Mäntylä

Venus and Jupiter set so gracefully to the west that we had to take a landscape star picture.

Binocular comet ZTF

6.2.2023 at 18.30 - 19.00 - Kangasala, Sahalahti (II)
Jorma Mäntylä

I observed a ZTF comet for the third time this year. The comet is now mag 5. It was not distinguishable with the naked eye due to the moonlight and frost, and there was probably a faint aurora veil in the sky. With the camera, ZTF was found in Ajomiehe immediately inside the ϵ Aur triangle. At first I assumed that there would be nothing to shoot because of the moon, but the DSS image processing amazingly brought out the comet. The last image is one original unedited raw image. If the moonlight fades and the sky is clear, you can still get good pictures from this.

Comet with naked eye coma ZTF

29.1.2023 at 00.39 - 00.55 - Kangasala, Sahalahti (II)
Jorma Mäntylä

Comet ZTF was found again in little Otava. The pictures did not turn out as good as on 26.1. Seeing was not as good and the moonlight has already started to disturb. Still a handsome tail. The movement during 10 min is distinguished from the two images 0.36 and 0.46. Let's follow up. Edit. I processed the images with Deep Sky Stacker. The image now contains 6x30 s RAW images. The comet moved so slowly that the stacking was successful.

Binocular comet ZTF

26.1.2023 at 23.00 - 23.59 - Kangasala, Sahalahti (II)
Jorma Mäntylä

After three weeks of clouds and fog, the sky finally cleared. Comet ZTF stood out perhaps to the naked eye, or at least there was something extra under little Otava. A handsome greenish comet stood out on the camera and tracking stand. Edit. I reprocessed the image and made the tail stand out better.

Binocular comet ZTF

2.1.2023 at 06.35 - 06.45 - Kangasala, Sahalahti (II)
Jorma Mäntylä

Comet C / 2022 E3 ( ZTF ) was best seen in the morning high in the sky. The head stood out faintly as an extra star in the Northern Crown constellation. With a camera and 50 mm optics, the green color and a bit of a tail came out even without a tracking tripod.

Quiet aurora arc

23.10.2022 at 22.00 - 22.45 - Kangasala, Sahalahti (II)
Jorma Mäntylä

The K-index jumped to four and the sky was clear. I went to the side of the forest road, where you can see to the north. At first there was only a calm arc, until at 2230 the rays were also visible. As a bonus, Mars, the god of war, now shines red in the eastern sky when Europe is at war.

At least 10 lightning strikes seen

19.8.2022 at 18.00 - 20.00 - Kangasala, Sahalahti (IV)
Jorma Mäntylä

A couple of hours of fun in Sahalahti. Four strikes very close. One picture was caught by lightning. Only 2 mm of water fell.

Aurora rays

19.8.2022 at 00.00 - 00.20 - Kangasala, Sahalahti (III)
Jorma Mäntylä

The aurora show continued, although not as bright as the night before. So I went again to the side of the forest road, from where there is a view to the north. Handsome rays stood out just after midnight, after which a peaceful green arc stood out in the north. The show may have continued, but after 0020 clouds covered most of the sky.

All-sky aurora

18.8.2022 at 00.10 - 00.40 - Kangasala (IV)
Jorma Mäntylä

The gauges of Nurmijärvi and Colorado showed such readings that I went to the side of the forest truck road to light the northern lights. They were there at midnight, and there were some nice pictures. The show froze and nothing else was seen after 01. A rare crown in southern Finland still managed to catch the camera.
