1.3.2023 at 15.15 - Inari (III)

While photographing the snowy tree and the landscape, I noticed an arc of clouds in the sky. It was a nice surprise for the afternoon snowshoeing. The arch disappeared into the clouds rather quickly.

A fireball at night, as bright as a full moon

27.2.2023 at 20.16 - Sodankylä (III)

While photographing the northern lights, I noticed a bright line of light flashing behind the trees. I thought it was a fireball. When looking at the photo, I noticed that it was fortunately left in one picture. Attached is the original image and a cropped image from it. The camera clock is about 8 minutes behind in the picture.

Half-sky auroras

27.2.2023 at 19.15 - 20.35 - Inari (IV)
Aija Heikkilä, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

After a cloudy day, the clouds gave way in the evening just before the northern lights were activated. The gusty wind brought a small challenge to filming. However, spending time outside was worth it when I got to enjoy the wonderful northern lights for an hour and a half. The camera clock shows 8 minutes too little in the pictures.

At least 10 lightning strikes seen

12.7.2022 at 20.50 - 22.00 - Luumäki (IV)
Aija Heikkilä, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Tuesday evening's thunderstorm was spectacular when it passed Luumäki. After a distant flicker, the wind picked up and the cloud rolled over. I had time to photograph a few more distant flashes before the rain started. After that, I had to film through the car glass so that the whole car wouldn't get wet.

Halo phenomena covering the sky

3.4.2022 at 14.00 - 14.35 - Laukaa (IV)
Aija Heikkilä, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

You also had to observe the sky during the birding trip. As the clouds increased, a thin 22 ° ring appeared. For a long time, it seemed that a larger screen would not be allowed. As I shot the swans of my time, I noticed the halo brightening up a bit. At the same time came 22 ° upstream and side suns. At this stage, the sky had to be examined in more detail, and a piece of the 46 ° ring and the entire horizon ring also stood out. More glory would have been desired for the halos, but this was a good start for halo in April.

After the clouds receded at nine o'clock in the evening in Luumäki, I headed to the shore of the lake to see if the northern lights could still blaze. Reaching the shore fairly quickly, the thin arch intensified and a magnificent northern lights show ensued. At eleven o'clock, clouds began to appear in the west and the show faded, so it was a good time to go to sleep.
