NGC 7023

21.3.2023 at 22.50 - 03.39 - Rautalampi (II)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Sisä-Savon Ursa

Someone has swept some of the dust from space around the Iris Nebula. A bit tricky to shoot with an osc camera and a light pollution filter. Light exposures for 4.25 hours. EDIT: Added version with calibrated star colors.

NGC 7000

20.3.2023 at 23.46 - 03.29 - Rautalampi (I)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Sisä-Savon Ursa

North American fog with a color camera and dual narrowband filter. Direct stacked and via channel extraction. This is also an interesting experiment.

NGC 6888

17.3.2023 at 00.35 - 03.40 - Rautalampi (II)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Sisä-Savon Ursa

The Crescent Mist climbed from a rather low place in the east, little by little higher. I've tried this before, now with better tools.

M3

12.3.2023 at 23.41 - 01.53 - Rautalampi (II)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Sisä-Savon Ursa

Ball M3 with a short (550 mm) focal length. With a longer tube, the stars in the middle area would appear more separate, of course. An interesting experiment, though.

IC 342

10.3.2023 at 21.39 - 00.14 - Rautalampi (I)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Sisä-Savon Ursa

Hidden Galaxy as a filming location. It is large and bright in itself, but is so close to the level of the Milky Way that interstellar dust 'hides' it. Actually an autumn destination. Quite high also in the north.

IC 410

9.3.2023 at 20.28 - 23.24 - Rautalampi (I)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Sisä-Savon Ursa

Mallet fog in severe frost. However, the heating works. Duo Narrowband (3 nm) filter and OSC camera test runs. The clubs came out quite moderately. Two images via channel extraction, with slightly different 'hardnesses'. Third straight.

Moon

8.3.2023 at 00.19 - Rautalampi (IV)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Sisä-Savon Ursa

Full moon in a narrow band. 3nm duo narrowband filter (Ha, OIII). Brushing: Photoshop.

Caldwell 9

7.3.2023 at 21.02 - 04.09 - Rautalampi (I)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Sisä-Savon Ursa

Cave fog in the bitter cold. The mouth of the cave was frozen (ice in the lens), so it had to be framed like this. Duo 3nm Narrowband Filter: straight stack, color channels extracted and the latter also without stars.

Venus and Jupiter

2.3.2023 at 19.07 - 19.37 - Suonenjoki (IV)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Sisä-Savon Ursa

Venus and Jupiter on Tyrinmäki. Hiking photo every minute. It was beautiful to watch.

Half-sky auroras

27.2.2023 at 20.11 - 20.28 - Rautalampi (IV)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Sisä-Savon Ursa

I was a little late. The best pieces have time to go. Compilation of 17 min, 8 s exposures.

Moon, Venus and Jupiter

22.2.2023 at 18.28 - 18.46 - Suonenjoki (IV)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Sisä-Savon Ursa

A spectacular conjunction in the bitter cold on Tyyrinmäki. In the animation, standard exposure values, evening darkening over 12 min.

M44

21.2.2023 at 20.20 - 23.20 - Rautalampi (III)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Sisä-Savon Ursa

The starry sky has -as you might expect- also constellations, in addition to nebulae and distant galaxies (which, of course, also have stars). Praesepe on a frosty night. Fortunately, the remote control allows filming in the warmth of the living room. With and without booster spindles.

IC 443

14.2.2023 at 22.29 - 16.01 - Rautalampi (II)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Sisä-Savon Ursa

I've tried to photograph the jellyfish habitat before, but now I used a better narrowband filter. Seeing was moderate. The guidance was almost spot on: the cumulative inaccuracy was on the order of 0.7 seconds of arc.

NGC 1499

11.2.2023 at 20.16 - 03.26 - Rautalampi (II)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Sisä-Savon Ursa

An old familiar destination. I photographed the fog with a 135 mm lens, so it fit in its entirety in the frame. Still have to try separating the Ha-OIII channels and combining the images. Would the colors of hydrogen and oxygen come out better.

Simeis 147

10.2.2023 at 22.36 - 04.20 - Rautalampi (I)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Sisä-Savon Ursa

Spaghetti fog, a very challenging object due to its vast area and weak surface brightness. Getting the Samyang 135mm/2 lens on board with the rest of the equipment required a bit of improvisation. On the INPUT side, the filter is L-Ultimate, with step-down adapters. Added some vignetting and asymmetric flare of stars in the peripheral areas. An interesting experiment, though. Light only 12 x 15 min light, 12 x 15 min dark.

Telescopic comet ZTF

10.2.2023 at 19.19 - 20.26 - Rautalampi (I)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Sisä-Savon Ursa

Another view of the comet. If you look closely at the animation, you will also notice the small movement of Mars in relation to the stars. Stacks: APP, and DSS including also star alignment.

M42

28.1.2023 at 22.18 - 22.49 - Rautalampi (III)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Sisä-Savon Ursa

Again, try to hold on. The intention was to photograph the comet, but those clouds... It became clear later. I chose a safe target. I only got light for 27 x 1 min, then it got cloudy again. I tried to bring out the surrounding 'fringes', but it was a bit dull. Too little data.

Comet with naked eye coma ZTF

26.1.2023 at 19.24 - 19.34 - Rautalampi (II)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Sisä-Savon Ursa

A ten minute vision. 550 mm is an unnecessarily long focal length if you want to see even the tail. Here's a hint of a tail, maybe also a "forward" looking beginning of a diffuse discharge. To be tried next with a 135 mm camera lens (if available).

IC1396

4.1.2023 at 17.55 - 23.14 - Rautalampi (II)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Sisä-Savon Ursa

An elephant's trunk on a frosty night. The devices withstood the cold well during a session lasting more than 8 hours.

Barnard 33

1.1.2023 at 20.37 - 00.45 - Rautalampi (II)
Vesa Vauhkonen, Sisä-Savon Ursa

A horse's head in the Hubble palette experiment and as a 'normal' color image. A 3nm double narrowband filter and a color camera are used.
