Half-sky auroras

27.2.2023 at 00.30 - 03.40 - Karkkimala, Mustasaari (IV)
Sebastian Sainio

Blood red... It was such a memorable night. Maybe not just from the aurora borealis, but also from my own tinkering with the equipment. That's when the best part passed, when I was already throwing my gloves on the counter because of the clouds. What's up, put the hardware back together and let's go! The 6D I bought last fall was put to the test tonight, and my inexperience with the new device didn't make it any easier to shoot. The keys were frozen. I had gone to a neighboring village to look for new filming locations for this evening. The northern lights did not come as a sur...

Corona

23.12.2022 at 14.18 - Vaasa, Runsori (III)
Sebastian Sainio

Christmas greetings from Vaasa! I wandered along Lentokäntätieti with a fillar, the plans for the day were to photograph a couple of pilots. The low sun was shining through a thin layer of fog, creating a very nice atmosphere. I decided to stop and have this rap. The Pohja barn was allowed to function as an additional element.

Half-sky auroras

3.10.2022 at 00.40 - 01.40 - Mustasaari, Helsingby (III)
Sebastian Sainio

It was "the night of geomagnetic thunder" again. I went to the yard sometime around midnight when I saw from NOAA's Real time solar wind data that the Bz value had dropped and stayed around -8 for a long time. The first aurora borealis were pretty basic, but after one o'clock it started happening. A strong eruption of aurora borealis rose into the sky from the west, which later covered more than half of the sky. At that time, the shapes were mostly very fast pulsating waves, visually coming as if they were waves from the north. The pulsing speed of the waves and splashes was really fas...

Active aurora band

8.8.2022 at 01.17 - 01.40 - Mustasaari, Helsingby (III)
Sebastian Sainio

I really don't know if this sighting should be reported as aurora borealis, night clouds or even a rocket launch? Maybe all of these would do, but the northern lights were still the most important performer of the evening. Quite an explosive beginning of the northern lights season indeed. The dark blue moment was only enough for a couple of hours. As typically happens in photography, I missed the best moments before I could stretch myself out into the yard. Here are some bad raps from the night's special encounter. Of course, the clouds got in the way before I could photograph anything...

Image of an exceptional thunder cloud

28.6.2022 at 05.33 - Mustasaari, Helsingby (III)
Sebastian Sainio

A handsome anvil cloud appeared eastward early this morning. The temperature was pleasant (compared to noon) +17 degrees humid. The summer morning feeling was really in place. The mist raft above ground level and the shadows cast by thunder clouds into the hazy air added to the atmosphere.

All-sky aurora

14.3.2022 at 01.00 - 02.30 - Mustasaari, Helsingby (V)
Sebastian Sainio

He paints the sky . An absolutely insane light show. Like geomagnetic lightning. Wavy, really fast pulsating movement. Anything happened in the sky during a few hours. There was green, red, pink, purple and other colors. The aurora borealis took forms from which a lively imagination can gallop. The most spectacular aurora displays in years, as many others stated. Eight pictures hardly tell the whole story. During the night I rapped about 150 of them. I could have rapped much more if the time had been slowed down. My camera equipment is by no means specialized in photographing the northern ligh...

Green rim

9.1.2022 at 15.22 - Vaasa, Laajametsä (II)
Sebastian Sainio

Last Sunday I managed to document (I assume) the so-called The “Green Flash” and its rarer cousin the “Blue Flash” as the sun sets behind the horizon. I understand that this weaving phenomenon is relative. rare. There were quite modest beaches, hardly visible to the naked eye, but the colors stood out well in the pictures. The fine sunny and remarkably bright winter weather prevailed throughout the day. Freeze between -12 and -15 degrees at the time of shooting. In the main picture, both green and blue stand out at the edge of the strip, in the second picture the strip has shrunk almost comple...

At least 10 lightning strikes seen

3.8.2016 at 00.00 - 03.00 - Mustasaari, Helsingby (V)
Sebastian Sainio

At midnight, there were quite heavy thunderstorms on the west coast near Vaasa. There was a lot of flash, so the camera came up again and I grabbed a few good flash pictures. :) EDIT: I added a slightly cropped first image.

Eye-catching night shining clouds

16.8.2015 at 00.50 - 01.10 - Mustasaari, Helsingby (V)
Sebastian Sainio, Ursa (Länsi-Suomi)

Came to see such bright night clouds for the first time. :) I grabbed a few good pictures of them with my simple digital camera. It was great, but if there were still northern lights among them. EDIT: I added another HDR edited image.
