For several years, I have been trying to get the “flames” of the Cigar Galaxy photographed without success, so I decided to point my brand new telescope with the HO filter at the Otava Bucket area. For two consecutive nights (March 14th and March 15th), I collected a total of just over 9 hours (76 x 450s) of exposure, and even though the moon shone quite bright, I finally got to see the flames! The end result is surprisingly accurate, so the air must have been calmer than usual.

Last night there was quite a bit of wind, so the telescope had to be positioned in terms of airflow to the quietest corner of the house. However, only the northern sky was visible from this. I decided to test the functionality of the shooting equipment I adjusted for a moderately challenging object, the IC 342, otherwise known as the Hidden Galaxy, which is located quite close to the Milky Way belt and thus has quite a few stars and hydrogen clouds in front of the object. The new field of view of the RedCat51 telescope is just a passel to capture this very large emissions fog. The exposure accumulated for a total of almost 3 hours, which was great enough to capture this moderately bright subject. On previous shots, an unfortunate number of underexposures were out of focus, so I decided to adjust and lubricate the Skyguider’s wheel. This was clearly beneficial, as now all the exposures were excellent. In the post-editing of the final image, I gave myself a bit of artistic freedom and thus the end result is a bit "unorthodox" in terms of colors;)

Thanks to a rare good shooting night, I got a record 5 hours of exposure from this handsome subject in the Swan Tail area. The new RedCat51 lens starts to show its nails when focusing, polar aiming and tracking are noisy. Setting up the set to full shooting condition only takes a quarter, which is a good thing for future winter shooting sessions.

On the merits of a clear night, I was able to test the new shooting set again. This time I moved the stand from the grass to the hard ground and the tracking improved considerably. That is, the grass gave up so much that the polar sight shifted according to the focus of the shooting head. MGEN worked great until the clouds came to disturb after a couple of hours of exposure. Home Office Day makes it possible to combine work and hobby. In the morning there was a moment of clear skies and only a faint cloud of gauze in front of the sun. Through the association’s solar tube, I separately took videos of 1,500 images from the surface and perimeter of the sun, of which I stacked 150 images together and combined them into the attached image.

After the tripod was serviced, I finally got to test its operation and while waiting for the sky to darken, it was a good time to shoot the moon. I took 250 pictures, the best 50 of which I stacked in the picture below. The end result is intentionally slightly pulled over to make the dimmer surfaces of the moon more visible.

You can also take astrophotos on a ski holiday! I set up the camera in the yard of the rental cottage and aimed a 200-millimeter lens towards the Driver's constellation. The comet Iwamoto cools down in space so fast (230,000 km / h relative to the ground) that I stacked just over 20 minutes of exposure in the image below. The picture also shows nicely e.g. Flaming Star Nebula and the open constellations Messier 36 and 38.

Orion is only visible for a couple of hours at my backyard location, and even then the light pollution in the city is just right on the road. As a result, I have done little to describe the handsome objects in that area. I had just maintained the tripod and wanted to try it out without a guide. I exposed the Horsehead Fog for an hour and although there was a lot of missing from the subject due to light pollution, the main thing was described handsomely.

A few weeks ago, I was able to fit an image of the entire Driver’s constellation with an 85-millimeter lens when I first tested my new Canon 6D.
