Telescopic comet Nishimura

10.9.2023 at 04.16 - Kuopio, Riistavesi (II)
Minna Glad, Kuopion Saturnus

Voitto Pitkänen's observation https://taivaanvahti.fi/observations/show/118541 was so encouraging that I took a closer look at the photos I took early in the morning. Well, Nishimura was left there with a wound! And when you use a magnifying glass or your imagination, the tail also stands out.

Telescopic comet Nishimura

10.9.2023 at 03.57 - Kuusamo (I)
Voitto Pitkanen, Ursa (Pohjois-Suomi)

The comet hunt ended at dawn. The shore of the sky was getting lighter quickly and the star chart was an immense help in locating the comet quickly. So I was able to capture a small trace of it in a few frames.

Here is the observation of comet Nishimura from eVscope's science side from yesterday morning. I also took a couple of pictures with the eVscope before observing the scientific space.

Telescopic comet Nishimura

A repeat of the previous morning, waking up at 02:30 in the program, first the transit of asteroid 2006 QK20, which I'm not sure what I was able to record, when in the middle of everything the device connections were completely lost. Otherwise, it was a pretty chilly morning and the humidity was 85%. Shortly before four, comet Nishimura came, and I got the first picture of it partly with the trees. The next attempt at four and the comet had risen just past the tree and the relief was great when even this one was successful, so there was no need to wake up early. A gif video compilation of ...

Telescopic comet Nishimura

7.9.2023 at 03.39 - 04.44 - Lohja, Liessaari (II)
Jari Virtanen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

The forecasts said that it would be clear on the morning of September 7th, so the night before I started thinking about the photo location. I did go to a couple of places on the east side of Lohjanharju, but the comet rising from the northeast was also behind the visual barriers when viewed from them. In the end, I chose a standard spot on the western side of the ridge, although there might be more light pollution. Around 2 o'clock, I first started with a picture of the moon. At the same time, I got the focus of the lens right. I was in a place covered by trees, from where I could not see ...

I looked at the clear sky in the evening and regretted that I couldn't film all night. In the morning there was an early wake-up call and a working day. I solved it by making a compromise and set the clock to ring at half past three in the morning. Now I had time to sleep for a few hours. The decision paid off, because I was able to photograph Comet Nishimura, which had changed considerably since my previous observation on August 20. The tail stood out in the next few seconds and what a wonderful greenish coma. I compiled a short gif animation from five pictures. I also filmed a scientific...

Telescopic comet Nishimura

5.9.2023 at 08.39 - Orotava Valley, Kanariansaaret (III)
Jari Backman, Etelä-Karjalan nova

Comet Nishimura is approaching the Sun. Magnitude is currently around 8 and is forecast to peak at around 5 on September 19th. It has moved from the constellation Kravus to Leo and is closest to us on September 13 at a distance of 0.85 AU. The image is from the morning of September 5th, and the tail of this image from T3 is more than 70 arcminutes, because it goes outside the image boundaries. Treated in PI and Ps forms.

Telescopic comet Nishimura

22.8.2023 at 07.00 - 07.30 - Fregenal de la Sierra, Spain (III)
Jorma Ryske, Etelä-Suomen kosmol. seura

Comet C/2023 P1 (Nishimura) brightens as it approaches the Sun, from which it is now at a distance of 0.88au. The comet can be seen low in the eastern sky in the morning, photographed here from a remote observatory in Spain, but a nice photograph has also been obtained from Finland ( https://www.taivaanvahti.fi/observations/show/118074 ) even though it is still a few degrees lower. In the animation, 9x120s L filter frames from 2023-08-22 04:08UT, in the inverted image the same stacked 9x120s. Ion tail length 23' corresponding to 1.3 million km, PA 280°, Coma diameter 3.3', measured m1 ...

Hideo Nishimura (74), a Japanese amateur astronomer, discovered a new comet on August 13. The comet is named Nishimura's comet after its discoverer. The new comet Nishimura is expected to brighten to about magnitude 3.7 around September 10. This means that it should be visible to the naked eye in the clear night sky, although it is still dark in Finland. The comet can be found near the twins in the early morning before sunrise. I haven't found any observations of comet Nishimura made in Finland in sky watchers yet I look forward to seeing how Nishimura's comet develops in the comin...

Telescopic comet Nishimura

16.8.2023 at 07.20 - 07.30 - Fregenal de la Sierra, Spain (II)
Jorma Ryske, Etelä-Suomen kosmol. seura

A new comet has been found and now confirmed C/2023 P1 (Nishimura), the discoverer is amateur Hideo Nishimura in Kakegawa, Japan, and his instrument is a regular digital camera with a 200mm telephoto on 11.8.2023. The MPC's PCCP (Possible Comet Confirmation Page) listed probe name for this was HN00003. The comet will be in perihelion on September 18, 2023, when its distance from the sun is 0.22 AU, which means that it will be quite close to the sun and may even break up then. Here is this morning's "throw shot" of the new comet, a 3x3min exposure from a low altitude of less than 10 deg...
