Active aurora band

10.10.2018 at 21.00 - Lieksa (III)
Tuomo Arovainio

For once I thought of just watching the northern lights, but it didn't become anything: D. I only periodically watched the dimmer set, but as the lights brightened I had to dig out the camera.

All-sky aurora

7.10.2018 at 22.30 - Kitee (V)
Tuomo Arovainio

For a long time ..... For once clear skies and calm weather. In a little hurry I only had time to look at the second ‘brightening’, but everything was worth the hurry. Only the vote of the geese broke the silence.

Luckily this year there has been a clear sky on offer, and now on dark nights there is a great opportunity to spot the Milky Way in its best glory. Once again, I went with Karri Pasanen on the back of the night, and we got a few reasonable frames saved. Mist hovered over the lake, and the western skyline was covered with a light layer of clouds. So the situation was great for playing with a flashlight. Even the light pollution did not disturb the almost silent calm night.

At least 10 lightning strikes seen

3.8.2018 at 22.00 - 22.45 - Kontiolahti (IV)
Tuomo Arovainio

Painful twist with daylight and rain, but Karri Pasanen and I drove a couple of times to take pictures. I had pretty bad luck myself, but Karri got a few screens to succeed the night before. Personally, I was left empty-handed until we set off on another trip. First, the sun set on the horizon below the clouds, painting the landscape a magnificent color. The result, of course, was a rainbow that put a little hurry on the clogs. The rain was considerable at this point, and only a couple of the pictures taken of the rainbow were successful. We continued a little distance after the thunder front,...

At least 10 lightning strikes seen

2.8.2018 at 22.00 - 00.00 - Joensuu (III)
Tuomo Arovainio

Last night, Kontiolahti had a long night of thunder. The flicker looked really handsome as a thick layer of clouds darkened the landscape and lightning flashed it momentarily. Admittedly, lightning struck mostly inside the clouds, and as a result, image capture remained rather poor when compared to the situation seen with my own eyes. Still, the feeling was great in the heat of an almost tropical summer night.

Total lunar eclipse

27.7.2018 at 22.40 - 00.00 - Lieksa (IV)
Tuomo Arovainio

The lunar eclipse had apparently been drummed in the media, at least enough, because there were a surprising number of people flocking to Paalasmaa in Juua to see the phenomenon. I was in traffic with Karri Pasanen, and we had to find ourselves in the wrong place. So a quick change in plans was in place. We drove to Paalasmaa ferry, where a fair ferry driver canceled to pick us up again, because we arrived at the beach last time. Thank you very much in that direction. So, “suddenly,” clouds had appeared in the sky, of which not even the weather reports or radars really knew anything. However, ...

Several halo forms

7.4.2018 at 15.03 - 15.37 - Kontiolahti (II)
Tuomo Arovainio

I noticed the phenomenon while doing yard work. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to pick up the camera as soon as I noticed the phenomenon, when it was best seen. However, I screwed the 12mm ultra-wide angle into place, and used the house to cover the sun. I handled the image with a fairly fair hand that the phenomenon came to light in some way.

Quiet aurora arc

15.3.2018 at 23.06 - Lieksa (II)
Tuomo Arovainio, Karri Pasanen

Once again, the wind coming from the crown opening was left behind the clouds in large areas of North Karelia. However, the cannon was promised for a couple of nights, and the values measured by the satellites gave hope for a great evening. So we started with Karri Pasanen towards Koli and the northern lights. As we made our departure in the eighth evening, clear and moderately bright northern lights were visible in the northern sky in the backyard. We already thought pessimistically that we were late again in terms of filming, but we still set off. Still on the way, brighter lights were visib...

Oh that ... Throughout the winter, the curses have gotten miserable, and now, during the great waves, the curses have had their own incompetence with regard to its famous departure. Luckily, the schedules go together with friends at least every now and then, and so I decided to make my next work day easier by monitoring. The schedules coincided with Karri Pasanen, and we targeted Koli and the rising moon, not forgetting Koli's cannons. The landscapes of Koli are my favorite landscapes, and the moon painted the landscape so stunning that it can withstand a little fatigue even at work. Soon ...

Quiet aurora band

28.3.2017 at 21.42 - Joensuu (II)
Tuomo Arovainio

After last night’s really handsome northern lights show, the plan was clear. Even tonight I have to go hunting, even though expectations for activity were no longer very high. We drove again to work with Pasanen Karri, this time with the campfire. The intention was to take it easy, and enjoy the clear sky, of course on that side we also take wholesale pictures. Upon arrival, the eyes revealed the truth. The evening and night will most likely be calmer and more dilute than the previous one. This idea was also supported by satellite data, which was no longer very favorable except for the speed o...

Active aurora band

27.3.2017 at 22.14 - Kontiolahti (III)
Tuomo Arovainio

My morning started as I drove off the night shift. I had watched for several days the effect of the corona opening on the activity of the northern lights that happened tonight. Before I had time to sleep, it became clear that the best moments of activity were already at hand. With this information in my mind, I stuffed my head into the pillow and my thumb into my mouth. I haven’t seen nightmares in the past, but now my dream was a pretty confusing nightmare, paced by three consecutive night shifts. It was close that I didn’t wake up to my own cry. The content of the dream also included satelli...

Auroras seen through breaks in the clouds

22.3.2017 at 23.06 - Kontiolahti (II)
Tuomo Arovainio

Today Weather Report promised to be bright between 21-03, so we packed our stuff with Karan Pasanen and headed to a nearby familiar filming location. I didn’t believe in the weather because last winter they haven’t really held true. However, there was a gap between the clouds, from which we had time to shoot a great northern lights play for a while. The clouds rolled quickly to cover the northern lights, so we waited for the situation to improve. While waiting, Karri looked at the pictures recorded on the camera, and in one screen apparently swung a fireball! The observation completely passed ...

Landscape image of a planet

1.2.2017 at 19.51 - Kontiolahti (III)
Tuomo Arovainio

The northern hunting yacht changed smoothly to follow the movements of the moon and Venus as the northern sky ‘fit’ into the cloud once again. It’s nothing, the common light of the moon and Venus was great enough to illuminate the landscape even to the naked eye. The frost banged loudly on the ice of the Pielisjoki River, while the frost began to rise into the terrain a little quietly. My friend and I went to observe the cloudiness from another observation point, after which it was easy to make a decision to go home. No northern lights again .... The picture shows the moon right in the 'ar...

Quiet aurora band

4.1.2017 at 23.57 - Lieksa (II)
Tuomo Arovainio

It was time to take the blanks away, the cloudiness in the North Karelia region that continued throughout the autumn and winter has thwarted almost all plans related to photography. The last time I got to shoot the northern lights properly in October, and even then the play was calm. So expectations had been loaded for this evening, and luckily I got along with three guys who had been loaded with the same expectations. By now, we saw an arc in the car that raised expectations even further. I felt a familiar tingling in the trigger finger, and the enthusiasm began to rise at the same time. We h...

Active aurora band

4.10.2016 at 21.02 - Liperi (III)
Tuomo Arovainio

Promises, promises. There weren’t really any promises for the Northern Lights tonight, but based on the satellite data, I made the decision during the day to go take pictures today. Towards evening, the situation looked worse, and I was already about to give up on the idea until I contacted Karri Pasase. Neither of them needed to be talked about and the departure was clear :). The windy evening waved the cameras and men, and the barge that had been inspected the night before had escaped. In it, it carried out its task in the picture as well.

Half-sky auroras

14.4.2016 at 22.25 - 00.00 - Kontiolahti (IV)
Tuomo Arovainio

Finally cloudless in the Kontiolahti area. I followed readings from the spaceweatherlive all evening, but I was worth leaving. Yes it was worth it :). Absolutely spectacular northern lights, are these the last of the season?

All-sky aurora

7.10.2015 at 20.25 - Kontiolahti (V)
Tuomo Arovainio

Promises, promises that were fulfilled. Too late for departure tonight, but luckily there was still time to shoot a great play. He made a great arc here and elsewhere. Dream debt accumulated again commendably, but this is worth it. Photo taken in Kontiolahti, Jaamankangas.

Aurora rays

6.10.2015 at 22.26 - Kontiolahti (II)
Tuomo Arovainio

Last night's northern lights enjoyed from home. Great looking from there too, thankfully the street lights go out here even before 11pm.

Half-sky auroras

9.9.2015 at 23.24 - Kontiolahti (IV)
Tuomo Arovainio

More pain in the form of clouds, the sky was blocked last night in the region of North Karelia. Really bright northern lights heated through the clouds, and again the holes tore into the sky from time to time for a few minutes at a time. I now took it as a tactic to look for a hole whenever the sky in the previous place was closed. The second transition was so successful that the gap was open at the active moment for a few minutes. So I took this picture in quite a hurry.

Half-sky auroras

Hardly from the sky when the northern lights predicted honey from the sky, and meteorologists clouded .... Well, we drove in the darkness of the night and looked for a suitable place to shoot. There were clouds everywhere, but here and there were open points lasting a few minutes. The car headed for the guy's cottage, where there happened to be a moment lasting in the clouds. Here is one picture of the catch of the evening, which was annoyingly small due to the clouds. Behind the clouds, he heated the green all night ...
