Jupiter

24.9.2023 at 23.52 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (IV)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Clear, quite decent seeing, quite a bit of humidity. There are more details in the photo than what I saw visually. Tlianne is the same as my previous observation, that is SEB and NEB visually seen as equally dark, the speck was only visible as some kind of expansion in SEB without attracting attention with its size or darkness. It's quite light, but in the photo it seems to be happening in SEB around it. Picture 2 also includes the moons when looking closely, the moons are marked. To the left of the moon Jupiter is Ganymede, to the right Io, Europa and Callisto. In photographic observation...

Quiet aurora band

18.9.2023 at 23.25 - 23.45 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (II)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

The northern lights as seen from the upstairs terrace, facing northwest and north. Unfortunately, taken with a cell phone. Quite dim, but quite excellent in a fairly wide area and even in the light pollution of the southern sky. The weather was clear, but a bit foggy.

Saturn

18.9.2023 at 00.10 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (II)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

The purpose was also to photograph Saturn. It was almost an attempt, there was something bad in the sky in that direction as well. Fortunately, over the years, Saturn is also rising higher in the sky, which makes it easier to spot. In general, it is easy to visually distinguish the moons around Saturn with my equipment, at least Titan. Now it didn't make any difference either, seeing Cassini's split naturally also remained a dream. So we have to come back to photographing Saturn again. However, dear audience and Skywatchers: here is my first picture of Saturn. The rings stand out, as d...

Jupiter

17.9.2023 at 23.59 - 00.03 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (II)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

The weather was almost clear. However, there was a slight haze in the sky and even the bright stars were quite difficult to see. However, now would be the first opportunity this season to see with your own eyes what GRS, i.e. Jupiter's famous red spot, is up to. Visually, you couldn't tell the details of Jupiter at all, you couldn't even tell the big red spot. However, SEB and NEB appeared to be equally dark, but featureless. At least the spot is not particularly dark yet. Contrary to plans, I didn't do drawing observation at all, because the bad weather was noticeable in the s...

Clavius

7.9.2023 at 01.43 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

The old familiar Clavius with its surroundings. The area offered quite a lot to look at, for example Moretus could be seen quite nicely partially in the shade and the shadows cast by both the edge ramparts and the central mountain were great. You can also see a bright spot right at the edge, which is probably the central mountain of Drygalski, which is otherwise quite weakly visible, directly in the sunlight! #Lunar100: 009 Clavius #Lunar100: 094 Drygalski

Jupiter

7.9.2023 at 01.31 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Jupiter had already risen to a reasonably good altitude. The purpose was to make a drawing observation, but the details were not visible. The polar regions were uniformly grey, but both SEB and NEB stood out quite clearly and darkly, the Great Red Spot managed to catch my telescope again. Since the details were hardly visible, apart from some individual small differences in darkness, I decided to try photographing Jupiter. And here is the first publishable planetary photo I took! The photo appears to reveal somewhat more detail, such as darker areas in the equatorial belt and what appears to b...

Archimedes, Plato

7.9.2023 at 01.24 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

The moon was about the last quarter rising to a comfortable height and I was ready with my equipment. If the last first filming trip didn't go quite as expected, now was the time to try recording the wonders of the Moon again. And this time the end result was better. Archimedes stood out very clearly with the difference in the darkness of the bottom, the nearby Aristillus and Autolycus were already slightly in the shade, although the layered edges of Aristillus stood out well. On the basis of Plato, the small craters were not separated visually, and they were not captured in the pictures e...

Mare Nectaris and Janssen

4.9.2023 at 01.41 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (I)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

There they are, the old acquaintances Mare Nectaris and Janssen. Rupes Altai stood out quite nicely in the lighting, it looks quite nice for Janssen too. Fracastorius was quite featureless in this lighting. #Lunar100: 007 Rupes altai #Lunar100: 021 Fracastorius #Lunar100: 040 Rima Janssen

Lacus Mortis, Hercules, Atlas

4.9.2023 at 01.18 - 01.48 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Hey hey, a bit more technical spotting was behind last night. I happened to buy a planetary camera (ASI224MC) that spring, I've just pledged to put it into use here this autumn. And last night was a great opportunity to try that. The end result isn't eye-catching, on the other hand, it's certainly not the best possible. I have a lot to learn in post-processing, and I'll come back to it if I get a nicer result from the video. In the telescope, however, the pair of craters Hercules and Atlas stood out quite well, partly in the shadow, and the crater Bürg in Lacus Mortis, i.e. the...

Jupiter

30.8.2023 at 01.30 - 02.15 - Vantaa, Pähkinärinne (IV)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Io was right next to Jupiter, and the shadow it cast on the planet's gaseous atmosphere stood out clearly. albeit in a small size (slightly exaggerated in the picture). It looked just like a tiny hole in Jupiter. From Jupiter itself, the South and North equatorial belts (SEB and NEB) stood out as quite wide and equally thick. A clear red color tone was visible. Wider areas, apparently bridges (festoons), stood out on the northern edge of the NEB. SEB also had clear thickening and darkening. The belt itself didn't look like a two-piece, but maybe it's splitting? The polar regions st...

Jupiter

18.8.2023 at 02.25 - 02.30 - Vantaa, Pa?hkina?rinne (III)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Now it was finally time to start the planetary season. Both Jupiter and Saturn were already quite attractively visible during the Perseid trip, and even then I felt like starting to study these objects in more detail. But now, with August well on its way, it was high time to do it. First light, of course, towards Saturn. The air was clear, but there seemed to be some slight moisture or fog in the air. Even with a 60x magnification, I was able to distinguish Saturn and the ring angle, which had narrowed quite a bit since the last meeting. Titan next to Saturn also stood out nicely. So, let'...

Cosmos 1733

18.8.2023 at 02.24 - Vantaa
Paula Wirtanen, Anne Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

In connection with making the observations, while looking at the sky, a satellite also caught our eyes on its way. The satellite was spotted right over Albireo and tracked above Vega. The brightness was on par with Albireo. It was Kosmos 1733, NORAD ID 16611. It is a Tselina satellite, which is an electronic intelligence satellite, and this individual was launched from Plesetsk on February 19, 1986. The detected movement of the satellite added to the map image captured from Stellarium in yellow.

Starscape image

Paula Wirtanen, Anne Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

So much time had passed during the Perseid walk that the Moon had already risen a few degrees. The narrow, waning crescent moon was in the constellation of Gemini and would rise from as far as the northeast direction. The problem was that there would be quite a lot of cover outside and on ground level in that direction, and there would be no possibility of photographing such a low object. The platform on the top floor I used to spot the night clouds turned out to be great for catching the crescent moon again. The problem was that the photography in that direction would have to be done obliquel...

Perseids

13.8.2023 at 00.30 - 01.30 - Vantaa
Paula Wirtanen, Anne Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

About an hour of active detection in the nearby area, mostly time spent in the Pähkinäpuisto area. Fairly dark places, the brightest stars could be seen and when the different street lights were a little out of sight, the conditions were decently suburban. However, the limit magnitude remained around three and a half, no stars of magnitude four were visible. This mostly in the direction of the south, in the lower sky, there seemed to be some kind of fog, from which the light pollution was reflected worse, and in the direction of Perseus itself, the limit magnitude remained at three. However, t...

One halo form

30.7.2023 at 15.19 - Vantaa (I)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

The really, really dim 22° tire section stood out. It's exactly what you can see in the cell phone picture. The curve could be seen visually by approx. 10°, red and white stood out as colors. I saw a similar clip of a tire a little earlier, but it disappeared while I was digging my camera out of my pocket.

Eye-catching night shining clouds

29.7.2023 at 00.00 - 00.30 - Vantaa, Pa?hkina?rinne (V)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Now really good and eye-catching bright night clouds. A fairly quick observation and these were best seen from the top floor landing. K=5, I, IIa, IIIb, IVc. The height when seen visually is approx. 25°, in the photo the gauze can be seen even higher. Quite a wide view, from the west northwest to the far northeast, I would estimate 1/8 of the sky. The cloudiness is a little annoying. After half past one, the cloudiness increased somewhat.

Clearly visible night shining clouds

25.7.2023 at 00.00 - 00.55 - Vantaa, Pa?hkina?inne (III)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

In the lands of Polenyö, there was already clear vypp in the direction of the northwest and the north in a wide area. What stood out best was a slightly V-shaped vortex from the northwest, from which rays emanated. The whole thing even resembled an aurora corona and a dim gauze, and the beam was all the way to the zenith. The width was roughly from Arcturus to the north, a little past Capella. Here are pictures 1 and 2, in the first picture Otava has nicely joined the original picture, in the smaller version of Taivaanvahti it doesn't really stand out. As the observation progressed, the Ea...

Clearly visible night shining clouds

23.7.2023 at 00.20 - 01.00 - Vantaa, Pa?hkina?rinne (III)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

There were illuminating night clouds, even gratifyingly quite bright, in the northeast direction. Visually, a clear belt (IIa, IIb) and a small swirl (IV). Figure 1 from the beginning of the observation. Seen through the window from the upper floor, the visibility to the horizon was good, but as you can see from the picture, the wall started to meet a little despite a little reaching. So to explore the nearby terrain. Of course, the extent of the phenomenon could be seen a little better from the outside, but the visibility on the horizon was so bad that this night cloud display was unfortunate...

Dim night shining clouds

14.7.2023 at 00.30 - 01.00 - Vantaa, Pa?hkina?rinne (II)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Quite a dull (K=2) play. I was disturbed after midnight by the night clouds in the north. I went to study the sky a little later and at half past one a sharp-edged belt stood out in the northwest sky (picture 2, K=2, IIa). The observation point here was the platform of the top floor. When observing outside, a very dim (K=1) belt at the zenith and some other gauze-like dross stood out. In the cell phone picture (picture 3), this is dimly visible. The transparency was not very good, although the brightest stars could still be distinguished. As Capella, Arcturus, Deneb and Vega's friends, Alt...

Clearly visible night shining clouds

13.7.2023 at 00.10 - 01.10 - Vantaa, Pa?hkina?rinne (III)
Paula Wirtanen, Ursa (Helsinki)

Just after midnight, a very dim cloud (K=1) was visible over a wide area, above the zenith. The belt stood out most clearly in the northern area (K=1, IIb, figure 2) and a clear wave started to stand out in the northwest (K=1, IIIb, figure 3). Elsewhere in the sky there was a swirling and barely visible gauze (I). At some point I went back inside to get Nikke (my Nikon D3500 camera on the left) and wait for the play to unfold. Somewhat later, in the northwest there was a really beautiful and nice clear (K=3) night cloud formation, the main picture of which was: there was gauze (I), belts (IIa)...
