Half-sky auroras

14.3.2022 at 00.00 - 02.00 - Kontiolahti (IV)
Karri Pasanen

The timing of the CME eruption in the sun caused me a bit of a bittersweet feeling, as Sunday was a return day from Ruka and luck wasn’t there for the repos. I followed the situation while driving and stated that in the evening the terrain needs to be done to check the situation. However, the return took so long that the first handsome belts fluttered in the sky while I was still at home on the sauna ice on the stairs. A glance at the satellite data confirmed the notion that there was no need to hurry anymore, the direction of the magnetic field became unfavorable for at least the next hour. O...

Halo phenomena covering the sky

3.5.2021 at 15.15 - 16.15 - Joensuu (IV)
Karri Pasanen

As I drove towards Joensuu, the bright halos caught my attention and I had to look for a few pictures in the parking lot of the shopping center. The wit would have been better than a cell phone, but the evil was recovered. They were great. Some better identifier is needed for those rarities.

Quiet aurora arc

28.9.2020 at 21.15 - 02.00 - Kontiolahti (II)
Karri Pasanen

A repo shooting trip to a small and very wet salt marsh almost completely covered by curd moss. Expectations were high, but the plasma plate emptied into the atmosphere already during the drive. On arrival, however, we were able to admire the beauty of the wilderness swamp in the moonlight, the sound of white-fronted goose flocks as they flew in flocks over us, and the hovering of magnificent fog rafts across the pond. Let the moss even go drizzle when the day turns second. After frying the sausages, we found the situation turned so calm that it was time to head home. What was interesting, how...

Dim northern lights as the sun still illuminates the sky behind the horizon.

Opening of the season in the darkness of the shores of Koitere.

Backyard use. The filming trip planned for next Monday night made me stay in my home corner, but luckily we got to follow the gauges and the expectations of other users. When the magnetometers became restless, I moved to the backyard and for a long time after admiring the ascent of Otava after the curve, the wait was indeed rewarded. Stunning belts with pink bottoms a couple of times on the inside of the quarter. Dim wavy shapes rose even to zenith.

For a long time in the northern hunting yacht in familiar places on the shore of Höytiäinen. At times, the northern lights belt brightened nicely, but the finest thing of the evening was the spring night landscape as a whole, with the moon illuminating the ice blocks, and the ice bang and howl of the lake.

Milky way

27.8.2019 at 22.00 - 00.00 - Kontiolahti (IV)
Karri Pasanen

A really long night night trip. Actually, I was looking for the start of the Northern Lights season, but in a couple of hours, the play didn’t come yet. Instead, the Milky Way shone bright in the sky. Panoramic images hurled quickly, so the technical quality is not very strange.

Finally the opening of the northern lights season for this year as well! A promising repo forecast made me and my filmmaker Sam leave for Perch, although the frost of a fair selection of dogs was a bit of a guess. for the frost resistance of the equipment. When we got there, a clear but dim arc was visible, from which a few individual rays rose. However, the situation calmed down quickly and after an hour of observation we considered leaving for home. However, the satellite data and related discussions on the Northern Lights Firefighters Facebook group gave indications of better and we decided...

Rare halos

20.1.2019 at 20.30 - 20.42 - Kontiolahti (IV)
Karri Pasanen

I set out to walk the dog in the crisp 25-degree frost while watching the handsome Moon, which, behind a thin gauze, illuminated the winter landscape. After just a few minutes of driving, I noticed that the perimeter receded and an elliptical halo formed around it. And, of course, not even a cell phone with me. The dog was happy with the decision and I just started to grab a few hasty squares from my hand before the gauze covered the halo behind it. The clouds receded after a while, but the halo had already disappeared.

During the evening, I watched the life of the arc of northern lights from the backyard and decided to go quickly to take traditional sightings from Höytiäinen beach. However, I was left with nothing but the arches dimmed significantly while I was on the beach. However, the forecast also showed an increase in activity before midnight and the arc was pushed clearly higher, so I tuned the timelapse camera in the backyard for a while. Handsome rays appeared in the sky between 10 pm and 11 pm, with the attached gif from those moments.

Active aurora band

Karri Pasanen

Reposting and birding This autumn's filming trip with a couple of filming friends went first to Kilpisjärvi for a couple of nights and to Lofoten for four nights. Although photographing the northern lights, especially in the Lofoten Islands, was one of the goals of the trip, this time the environment provided such a stunning setting that small day trips were also made during the day to various parts of the archipelago. A couple of days before the trip, the effect of the sun's Corona opening wind had already subsided on arrival in the north and the expected values were not high for nort...

Active aurora band

10.9.2018 at 22.00 - 01.00 - Kontiolahti (III)

The traditional opening of the holiday season in Häikänniemi. During the early fall, I changed my camera equipment from a full frame (Nikon D750) to a mirrorless body camera Fujifilm X-T2 and I've been impatiently waiting to test the frame and Samyang's 12mm f2 lens with the repo people as well. Now there was finally a chance to do it, with quite handsome lights blazing in the sky, but it didn't go exactly as it was supposed to. I tested various settings and wireless data transfer from the camera to the computer and mobile devices from early evening at home. It turned out that with...

At least 10 lightning strikes seen

3.8.2018 at 19.45 - 22.30 - Kontiolahti (IV)
Karri Pasanen

Nearly three hours of thunder banged at a steady pace across Joensuu and Kontiolahti. A few good squares hit their seats, although the rain did make it quite difficult for businesses. The most visually spectacular phenomenon was provided by a red rainbow pierced by a magnificent lightning bolt. Unfortunately, I didn't get the flash until the cell. Images in reverse chronological order. Tuomo Arovainio probably has an almost identical version of the main picture in his observation, because when we came to the shore of the pond, we recovered the last flashes of the evening from almost the sa...

At least 10 lightning strikes seen

2.8.2018 at 18.30 - 20.00 - Kontiolahti (III)
Karri Pasanen

Finally a decent thunderstorm in Kontiolahti as well. A couple of years here have been waiting. A few handsome flashes, some of which also happened to the cell. When I got to the shore of Höytiäinen, it started to rain so hard that I had to leave the place. In a 15mm Irrix, a pair of gelatin films were attached as a back filter to get the stretched exposure time long enough for the hits to take. While waiting for the night ... hopefully the thunder will continue.

Bright night shining clouds

1.8.2018 at 00.40 - 00.40 - Kontiolahti (IV)

A handsome show that would have deserved a better filming location. At best, the Nightingales were over half the sky.

Clearly visible night shining clouds

29.7.2018 at 00.00 - 00.30 - Kontiolahti (III)

In North Karelia, the nights are starting to get so dark that in the coming evenings we have to move to better shooting locations for the yacht of illuminating night clouds. Today still from the backyard ...

Total lunar eclipse

27.7.2018 at 23.40 - 00.30 - Lieksa (IV)
Karri Pasanen

The heat-heated rock of Akka-Koli made dozens of people enjoy themselves on a summer night, although the eclipse itself remained modest visually, especially during the complete eclipse due to the clouds. In Tuomo Arovainio's observation, a more complete observation report for the evening. For the first and last image, the landscape was taken at 70mm and the Moon at 200mm focal lengths and combined afterwards. I think the landscape of the images is thus closer to visual perception.
