Several halo forms

29.9.2023 at 14.58 - Kouvola (II)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

During the day, I had noticed a faint ring behind the looming cloud cover, but I didn't have time to take a picture at that very moment and then it was forgotten. In the afternoon, I noticed from the window that it seems to be raining again. When I got to the yard, it looked like I had only seen cloud fibers, there didn't seem to be a halo. However, I took a quick look at the stacks once I had the camera in my hands. While shooting, I wasn't at all sure if there was a halo in the pictures, but on the camera it looked like the weak ring had stuck to the pictures anyway. Stacking aga...

Several halo forms

Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

A positive surprise when the stack (picture 2) taken from a modest "only 22 degree tire" (picture 1) revealed other forms of sand. The mouse cursor hovered over Parry's upper concave selection box for a moment, leaving without a trace.

Several halo forms

During the day, there was a "more pleasant" pyre noise, but I was busy with work and didn't have time to take a quick look out the window to see that there was more upper cloud than blue sky. It wasn't until late in the afternoon that I noticed from the convex mirror on the windowsill that I think I could see a bit of something rolling, and I quickly snapped a picture through the window. You could see from the ring that I changed to a wider cake and took another picture. Later, on a recreational skiing trip, 22r was still dimly visible through the cloud cover. In addition to 22r, 22ys ...

Half-sky auroras

25.9.2023 at 00.12 - 05.44 - Kouvola (IV)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

There were again opportunities for the northern lights and we came equipped with cameras, curlers and a bit of a north window. A little after midnight, you could see green in the north, a little more on the cell phone. I landed. When I got to the shooting location, it still looked pretty modest, I was already wondering if I would end up as a cobbler. My first job was to take a panorama (picture 1, 1.29-1.32) and a few pictures also in other directions with a fairer exposure in case of dim rarities. They were not found. The arc seemed to activate, so I switched to a circle fisheye and waited to...

Primary rainbow

24.9.2023 at 13.40 - Kouvola (II)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

The rain meant to drench the hikers, but it also gave a rainbow. Pretty modest, but whatever.

Half-sky auroras

18.9.2023 at 21.20 - 03.20 - Kouvola (IV)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

I flashed the sky cameras in the evening and at first nothing was visible. Then there was a rush, when Hankasalmi's image suddenly showed an arch well above the southern sky. Suddenly the camera to the balcony and straight up. The camera showed the gauze seen in gray as green. I also asked the girl to do a color vision test, but even her young eyes couldn't tell the difference between green and green. I snapped a few pictures of the veil and regretted not having "time" to investigate Sampa's focusing problem. Well, here we go. After a while, I moved the camera from the balcony to t...

Modest evening saur

Several halo forms

16.9.2023 at 15.54 - Pyhtää (II)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

I observed the sky (also) during the river cruise and despite the promising-looking cloud cover, I only once noticed a little bit of 22r to the right of the Sun. He was gone before I could take out the camera and snap one hasty picture. It seemed that the halo was no longer visible in the image. When processing, the halo on the right remained very vague, but directly above the Sun there was a colorful patch, so I hadn't noticed it live at all. I interpret it to be superficial.

Quiet aurora band

14.9.2023 at 21.45 - 01.25 - Kouvola (II)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

I pedaled to the nearby small jetty on the shore of Kymijoki when the repo curls looked promising and the sky was clear. There was a bit of cloud in the north in front of the calm aurora borealis. I rarely took pictures of the arch, but when I noticed red rays at the west end of the arch (picture 1, 21:58), I started shooting the series (picture 2, shooting time in the upper corner). With the naked eye, I could only distinguish green, so I only marked that color on the form under "Colors with the naked eye and other characteristics". The arch wasn't hugely agitated by it, but I noticed a d...

One halo form

A colorful side sun seen in the evening at a long focal length through the ventilation window. First image at 260 millimeters and animation at 340 millimeters. The halo faded during the animation's 12 min, but it wouldn't have stayed in the narrow field of view much longer.

Not a very strange 22r. Nothing else was found in the stack taken at the beginning of the observation (picture 1), but 46r was momentarily distinguishable in the material of a couple of hours (picture 2).

The cell phone shot taken on a shopping trip required a bit of high pass processing to make the vague 22r stand out somehow.

Anomalous corona

11.9.2023 at 18.35 - Kouvola (III)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

I stopped to take a picture of the anomalous ring. The sand of the Sahara was rumored to be in the air, maybe the flame had a part in this as well. The size was too small for Bishop, I estimated the radius to be ten degrees. However, I took a picture with a circular fisheye so that I could compare with previous Bishops photographed with the same cake. At first it seemed that in addition to the circle that was my target, there was also a wider circle in the picture. But when I softened the contrast of the image a bit, the larger ring-like one wasn't so clear anymore. And it didn't even ...

Thanks to Harri Kiiskinen's advice, I was able to consider observing the epsilon Perseids in September, and when the clear evening continued into a clear night, I put the camera to work. I only stayed for a few minutes and during that time I didn't see any shooting stars. Even the camera had only caught one, and if Stellarium is to be trusted, it was also sporadic. Of course, I didn't remember to check the camera's clock before shooting, even though it crossed my mind at some point, but calibrated according to the time reference picture taken afterwards (from mikes.fi official ...

Rare halos

7.9.2023 at 10.53 - 17.22 - Kouvola (IV)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

Halo report part 2/2: timelapse from 10.53-16.19 After an active twenty minutes, I left the camera shooting at 10 sec intervals. The unprocessed timelapse (first image, 20fps) has occasional spectacular halos, and the processed version reveals much more (image 2, 10fps). I made separate stacks of the most interesting points, and corresponding simulations: Figure 3: (see processed video, at 0:59) Six images, 12:30 p.m., 34.8° + simu as gif I was surprised when, in the simulation, the Lowitzes did not come across the "X" at the right Saur at all. I tried to simulate alternative Lowitzes and they...

Rare halos

7.9.2023 at 10.27 - 10.50 - Kouvola (IV)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

First of all, thanks to the Helicopter Battalion of the Uti Jääkäririkmenti: without the helicopters, this halo could have gone completely unnoticed. After all, it's always good to see the sky when you hear a helicopter, even now. I heard the NH90 passing nearby and rushed to the balcony with the camera. There were actually two helicopters, but at that moment they were invisible. There was a little 22 degree tire looming in the sky and I thought that now I could get a halo/heko joint portrait. More helicopters appeared, two NH90s and two MD500s flew in circles over Myllykoski. I switched t...

Crepuscular rays

6.9.2023 at 20.13 - 20.19 - Kouvola (III)
Tero Sipinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

I was bringing my daughter from practice and I noted the shadow of the ground, but it didn't cross the photography threshold. After a while of driving, when we reached the clearing again, I noticed a clear twilight cloud and it crossed the threshold for photography. I first took a couple of pictures with a 14-millimeter and suddenly I realized that the rain (or rather, it's a shadow) stretches across the sky. I took a five-shot panorama from the view and switched to wider optics. There was nothing publishable from the pictures of the circular fish eye. (In the image taken straight up, ...

Several halo forms

The daughter posted a picture of the pretty side sun on the right that she saw. I immediately went to the yard to check the situation and it happened there. Except that I could see the one on the left and so much reach upwards and it curves so much that I also mark the tire.
