Active aurora band - 21.1.2022 at 19.05 - 22.1.2022 at 00.30 Puolanka, Paljakka Observation number 104078

Visibility III / V

Minna Glad, Kuopion Saturnus

The northern lights were hiding behind the clouds in the early evening in seven countries. At eight, the clouds tolerated receding, and a quarter later the arc began to live and lift its calm rays. At half past nine the arc restrained itself to settle down and at times almost disappeared from view. A quarter past nine it brightened and condensed, but a decent sub-storm had not yet begun. After half an hour, two arcs appeared and again a calm radiance. By half past one, the greenery had dimmed to such an extent that I decided to take a tea break. The pause stretched for an hour, but then an intense arc appeared, activated, and spun a fine spiral at its eastern end! There is a small animation of the spiral that includes a 1.5 min period starting at 11.38.26pm. Different shapes were still visible in the arch, at least until midnight, but no longer so spectacular. After that, for about half an hour, individual dim rays rarely appeared here and there.

Bands are usually narrower, more twisty at the bottom, brighter, and more active than arches. Bands usually develop from arches.

Bands can form J and U shapes, sometimes even full spirals. The corona can also arise from bands. Bands are a fairly common form of aurora.

Mainiosti onnistunut siun animaatio!

Kiitos Emma, kiva kuulla! Pitänee malttaa antaa kameran vaan räpsyttää pidempään, että saisi vaikka koko näytöksen animaatioksi.

Ykköskuvassa on kyllä nätisti alkanut kaaari kirkastumaan.
