Milky way - 20.8.2022 at 19.00 - 20.8.2022 at 22.00 Narrabri, Australia Observation number 108762

Visibility V / V

Tomi Kurri, Porin Karhunvartijat

I visited the Australian town of Narrabri over the weekend, where the Paul Wild Observatory and the Australia Telescope Compact Array are located. I arrived at the observatory during the night of star photography, which is always organized around the time of the new moon.

The place was perfect for star photography. There was almost no light pollution (Bortle 2) and the center of the Milky Way was at its zenith right after dark. Radio telescopes always turning in the dark brought a Sci-Fi atmosphere to the evening.

The beauty of the Milky Way in such a place is hard to describe in words. It seems crazy to visually distinguish the familiar dark mists from photographs with your own eyes. The zodiac light was also easily visible.

The staff was really friendly and at the end of the evening they showed the best observation points in the southern sky with a 16" Dobson telescope. All in all, a really good visit!
