Had the opportunity to observe the sky in Tenerife for a couple of nights. The zodiac light stood out well. However, the night sky was not as dark in Teide National Park as I had assumed beforehand. SQM showed 21.2 mag/arcsec2 on the first night (when there were no subclouds) and 21.4 mag/arcsec2 on the second observation night (when there were subclouds blocking the lights of the coastal population centers), so on the Bortle scale we were in class 3–4. For comparison, I have measured readings of 21.7 mag/arcsec2 at the best in Patvinsuo National Park in Finland, i.e. on the Bortle scale it is class 1–2. So the amount of light pollution in Tenerife was a little disappointing for me and I don't quite understand the hype that is associated with its night sky. In addition, there were quite a lot of cars in Teide National Park even at midnight, whose headlights blotted out the landscape and disturbed photography, etc. The wilderness atmosphere was harder to achieve there. Of course, you can see constellations from there, which you can never see in Finland, and clear skies are available far more often than here, so in that sense it is a great place even at night. I would love to go there again.

Teide on ollut itsellänikin haaveena. Nuo kuvien puut nyt kyllä vähän hämmentävät. Et siis kuvannut mahdollisimman ylhällä? Oma kuvailuhaaveeni on ollut päästä niin ylös kuin mahdollista...
Nämä kuvat otin Teiden kansallispuiston reunalta, vajaan 2000 m korkeudessa olevan levähdyspaikan läheisyydestä, jossa kasvoi harvakseltaan pieniä mäntyjä. Olivat lähinnä testikuvia, joiden perusteella sitten päädyin siirtymään keskemmälle kansallispuiston aluetta, joka oli myös pikkuisen korkeammalla ja jossa rannikon valot häiritsivät hieman vähemmän Linnunradan kuvaamista tuohon aikaan illasta/yöstä (eli sektoria etelästä lännen kautta pohjoiseen). Kuvauspaikkana tuo olisi muuten ollut helposti saavutettava. Teiden kansallispuistossa autolla pääsee teitä pitkin käsittääkseni enintään noin 2400 metriin. Jos haluaa sitä korkeammalle, pitää kavuta lihasvoimin. Joskus on kai iltaisin tarjolla myös järjestettyjä retkiä hissillä Teiden huipun tuntumaan n. 3500 metriin. Teneriffalle pitäisi päästä useammaksi viikoksi tai kuukaudeksi, jotta siellä ehtisi tutkia kaikki mahdollisuudet ja löytää myös optimaalisimmat yökuvauspaikat. Itse en ole aivan varma, kannattaako siellä pyrkiä niin ylös kuin mahdollista, koska silloin rannikon valot saattavat paistaa suoraan silmään. Ehkä kuitenkin parempi pysytellä kalderan sisäpuolella, jolloin sitä ympäröivät vuoret tarjoavat näkösuojaa???
