Half-sky auroras - 18.9.2023 at 23.00 - 18.9.2023 at 23.20 Turku Observation number 118818

Visibility IV / V

Anne Tuominen, Turun Ursa

A rare collection of different aurora borealis was seen in the sky of Turku before midnight on Monday 18 September. These observations were made in Liljalaakso. First visible was a calm aurora belt. The aurora borealis moved calmly, i.e. not a clear eye-searing movement like in Lapland, they just calmly changed their shape. Along with this, bright aurora rays were also visible. At this time, the bright areas were concentrated in the east and west when looking north, and as rays also just above the head. After that, the northern lights became horizontal and started to rise overhead. This caused the northern lights to be over half the sky.
