Visibility I / V
I had decided to try to photograph the Lovejoy comet that had recently risen above the Finnish horizon in clear frost. The target was only about five degrees high and I tried to schedule my observation as close as possible to the point in time when it crossed the South Meridian.
The conditions for filming were not very glorious, as the frost worsened the effect of light pollution, especially near the horizon. However, I just managed to make the comet just appear. There were nowhere near as bright stars near the haze spot in the picture that the subject could have been confused. The spherical constellation M79 would have been less than a degree away, but it was too dim (7.7 mag) to appear in the image.
To make it easier to locate the comet, a list of some of the stars that appear nearby is attached to the image. The comet is in the picture below the letter C.
