Timo Inkinen, Ursa (Etelä-Suomi)

The undersigned was surprised by the absolutely stunning Northern Lights play, which was shown here until southern Finland. I was setting up a telescope for tonight’s deep sky shots as my attention was drawn to a light phenomenon in the twilight sky resembling an airplane’s abyss. On closer inspection, this turned out to be a very bright northern lights that were in active motion in the sky.

I ran inside to get a SLR camera with tripods and started shooting northern lights. In the early evening, the northern lights moved quite calmly, but each made bright shapes all over the sky, including the very southern sky. As the northern lights calmed down for a moment, I got my binoculars to shoot one mist and at the same time wondered what these images will be through the northern lights glow?

After getting my telescope to shoot I admired my wife with repos somewhere until half past eleven. Images were taken from here and there around the sky, and as the repos subsided, there was more to do with the telescope.

The "Grande Finale" of the evening came at about 24-01, when the sky was pounding, throbbing, pulping bright northern lights that rose throbbing towards the crown. The movement of the northern lights was confusingly fast and the bright northern lights made imaginative shapes in the sky. In the northern lights corona one could distinguish when the shapes of a bird, when a dragon, etc., and more scientifically pondered the subject, I was left to wonder the magnitude of these particle storms tonight.

This was the most amazing northern lights show for me in about 50 years! As a small specialty, I noticed that on March 17, 2013, there was also a handsome northern lights show, which was seen all the way to Southern Finland. This evening clearly passed it, i.e. for once I happened to be awake at the right time and ready to admire the strong northern lights storm (G4 / KP 8). Wau! :-D

Edit: I added a couple of GIF animations and changed the main image.
