This previously unknown little planet was photographed at the Nyrölä Observatory on Sunday evening, November 14, 1999, and again on Monday, November 15, 1999. Based on two observations, the orbit of the small planet was tentatively defined and the Minor Planet Center gave the asteroid its official symbol: 1999 VO24. Observers: Harri Hyvönen, Marko Moilanen and Arto Oksanen.

Later (May 9, 2001) the little planet was named Nyrölä at the suggestion of its discoverers:

MPC 42680: "(22978) Nyrola = 1999 VO24
Discovered Nov 1999 14 at the Nyrola Observatory.
Nyrola is a small rural village in central Finland and the site of the countryside Observatory of the astronomical association Jyvaskylan Sirius. This minor planet is the first to be found by Finnish Amateur astronomers. "
