Visibility II / V
Forecasts promised the possibility of lunar ice clouds in Vuokatti. Unfortunately, even when I set off, the forecasts had changed for the worse as the wind picked up. However, I decided to check.
There was a strong pillar forest in the Katinkulta region, but the crystals did not come from the ski slopes but possibly came from the factory smoke of Kajaani. The nearby Lahnaslampi limestone mine could also play a role.
A massive cloud emerged from the ski slopes towards the southeast. I went to follow it. The sparkle was sometimes full of air and sometimes it was surprisingly foggy. The temperature under the cloud was about -14 ° C. The 22 ° ring was visible in almost the entire cloud area.
The picture is from the Sapsoperä intersection 16 km from the slopes. The 22 ° ring is clear but not overly bright. Roaring the images harder reveals a weak horizon and side suns. They also stood out visually in places. The northern edge of the crystal cloud came in less than a mile north of that.
I walked about 30 km from the slopes in Sauko, where the thicker cloud seemed to end, but there was still sparkle in the car lights. There the temperature was -19 ° C.
The sky in the area was cloudless except for that artillery bloom and the light clouds of factory bloom seen in Vuokatti.
