Quiet aurora band - 12.8.2018 at 00.50 - 12.8.2018 at 01.00 Kempele Observation number 76681

Visibility II / V

Jarmo Leskinen, Ursa (Pohjois-Suomi)

The intention was to go see if the asses would be visible and at the same time take a few pictures of the night clouds that had already appeared. The surprise was quite considerable when the northern lights were clearly visible on the edge of the bright night clouds. This was the first time I saw both of these phenomena at the same time. I didn't see any asses, but this combo replaced them.

Edit: I added a giff composed of GoPro images. The northern lights were visible for about 7 minutes, so for once I happened to be outside with the camera at the right time :)

Bands are usually narrower, more twisty at the bottom, brighter, and more active than arches. Bands usually develop from arches.

Bands can form J and U shapes, sometimes even full spirals. The corona can also arise from bands. Bands are a fairly common form of aurora.
