Visibility III / V
I was watching jemma.mobi’s solar wind report on Thursday afternoon which looked pretty good. Since I thought the evening would be clear, it would be an opportunity to see the northern lights in Helsinki, for a long time!
Before half past ten I hurried with two cameras and two tripods to a rock with a good view to the northeast and a moderate north. At the top I noticed that the play was underway. I grabbed a quick picture with the phone and tuned the larger tripod and camera into shooting mode. The 14-millimeter would have looked more northern lights but I decided to put a 1.4 / 20-millimeter so I could use shorter shutter speeds as the repos were quite fast.
It wasn’t until the first play calmed down that I was able to set up another camera, to which I attached a 1.4 / 35-millimeter to also point north.
I also tuned the radio sync system so that both cameras flickered on their own every five seconds without having to do anything themselves. This is how I got to admire the repos myself in all peace.
Other spectators began to appear on the rock, so you didn't have to be alone all the time. Unfortunately, the largest crowd didn’t arrive until half past eleven, when nothing really happened in the sky. I left home myself around half past twelve even though new plays might still have appeared. Next time, a camping chair and a thermari are included! : D
