Visibility IV / V
Mikkilä and I were team hunting for a long time. The predictions promised a slab crystal inferno, and we got something of a kind.
First there was a good set with lower side suns and Lowitzes. In addition to the concave and convex Lowitz shape, a divergent tail (i.e. caused by non-parallel light) seems to come from the lower side suns, and in the same pictures there is of course also a so-called a superlamp (i.e. relative to the divergent light of the upper sun) as an extension of the pillar.*
The images of the Lowitz phase (the two images where the lower side suns are sharp) have some funny juju. Especially in picture 4. But I'll leave that for the hawk-eyed reader to find and figure out.
On the opposite side, a lower horizon ring was visible and at some point I was convinced of the lower Liljequists, but I didn't start stacking a decent picture of them. Maybe I should have.
Another particularly interesting phase was when Moilanen dominated the play at times. Co. the image is a stack of 32 frames and of course other halos can be seen in it. But visually, there were some moments when Moilanen was clearly the brightest. **
The most ticklish thing of the evening was probably when we noticed that little ring visually. It was unmistakably visible and we guessed that it was Moilanen's ring since we didn't really believe in pyramidal crystals because of the heat. It was about -16 in the ice fog and -18 outside the fog, at least in the lower parts, according to the car gauge.
But isn't that quite normal? And it seems to also have an upper parhelia.
Towards the end of the night, the stuff became matte and the heat started to rise along with the wind. But it was okay to go for a walk when we had seen a couple of pretty cool stages.
The images are stacks of different lengths, except for the one where Mikkilä stands out below the Moilanen arc and then the moon halo image.
An incredibly fun and great gig! :D

Tosiasiallisestihan Mikkilä ei tullut paikalle autolla. Sen sijaan hän tunneloitui kvanttimekaanisesti suoraan maisemiin. Toiseksi viimeinen kuva liittyy asiaan. :D
Kyllä olette ammattimiehiä tässä hommassa! Kun itekkin osais paremmin. Hienoa touhua!
